Has anybody noticed all the thumbs up around here?
Are we all so ingrained in social media that everything is a thumbs up?
For those who don’t know, I work in a couple of school districts handling PR. That can include a lot of things, but photography and video is a big part of it.

And goodness there are a lot of thumbs up.
My style of photography, at least when I am doing an event, or going into classes, is to get kids doing what I am there for. Maybe it’s a project. Or a game. Or a class assignment etc. But so many of them will stare and smile (never a bad thing) and often give a thumbs up.
I just don’t get it. Why is everything like that?
Is it because with social media it’s all about the likes? Give the ol’ thumbs up?

You will often enough get a peace sign or, what I call the surf’s up sign (index and pinky), but when the hands are used, it’s more often the thumb going into the air.
It’s crazy, though, that kids – even younger ones – do this. But it’s also the generation. If you think about it, kids in elementary/middle school, and even to an extent high school, have grown up in a world of social media. Photos are much easier to take and view than when I was a kid – anybody remember disc cameras? So the ability to ham it up is there and is a quicker gratification.
So that leads to everything else.
Social media is about the likes, the shares, the comments – the thumb! Kids mimic things like that. So of course if they see others do the thumbs up, why wouldn’t they? And, I will admit, at times it does make for a good photo.
Just not all the time.
It’s where we are. And it’s likely going to just keep going and going.
Thumbs up if you agree!
