2014 in Review: The photos

December 28, 2014

I’ll admit that I was pretty bad in regard to taking photos this year.

Well, at least with my regular DSLR.

2014_YearinReview_logo

What I did this year was rely heavily on my iPhone, which is fine in certain aspects, but not so much in others. Part of the issue was taking photos as part of work, the other was because my camera has been slowly going down. And hey, it’s understandable — it’s nearly five years old with many images snapped.

I am going to hopefully change that in 2015.

But, for now, we’re dealing with 2014.

Last year, I started doing something as part of the Year in Review with making a video of images. I split it into a few videos, but this year, it’s all in one. And, for the most part, it’s iPhone images. And, also for the most part, the photos are in order of when they were taken from January through December.

It is fun to look back at everything from the year in photos, especially iPhone ones where I captured many of them on the go. Alas, I will be leaning way more heavily on the regular camera in 2015, and learning the new one that I just got.

For now, enjoy the video below!

Coming soon: 2014 in review

December 22, 2014

It’s that time of year.

Where in the world did 2014 go?

In the past, my Year in Review posts have been different. One year it’s a post or two. Last year it was videos and photos and a post or two.

Then I looked at the calendar and realize… holy cow! I need to work on this year’s post(s). I am honestly not sure where I am going to go with it this year. It might be a couple of posts with photos trickled in, or it might be a video or two.

2014_YearinReview_logo

The issue there is that I haven’t really taken enough photos or video to do it.

One thing is for sure, as I looked back at my goals for 2014 — I failed miserably. Well, kind of. I did much of what I wanted to do, just not to the extent. All of those will be covered in the looking back posts.

My plan is to have a few Year in Review posts covering a variety of topics. Last year, I set up a schedule… and then botched it. All I know is I need to have these done by January 4 because, come January 5, the 20 Days of Chill Writing Challenge starts.

I’ve started leafing through the blog and other things to take notes … and I’ve realized this year was interesting. I did a bunch of things I find cool, but at the same time … I didn’t do several others. It all evens out, though.

And as I continue to move forward in my life and career, things will surely start working out in different ways.

I’m also working on my goals for 2015. I have some things where I will be challenging myself. Hopefully, if all goes well, I’ll be able to work at actually finishing all of them this year.

But as the holiday season rolls in, it’s a time to start looking back. I look forward to seeing where my mind goes when I write these posts and I hope you’ll be along for the ride.

Until then…

2013 Year in Review: Looking back (part 2)

January 8, 2014

With this post, my final look back at 2013, I wanted to get a little more direct — as in looking at certain aspects of the year. Though most with be upbeat, there were some things I look back and wish I did more of certain things.

I’ll see this — despite all of the issues I had this year, I did find time to do some really fun things.

From geocaching to a little bit of traveling when I could to whatever else, I always found a way to keep myself occupied. Here’s a look back at some of those things a little closer.

Geocaching

This past year marked my sixth year of geocaching. It’s kind of crazy, if I think about it. Geocaching has been one of the best hobbies I’ve ever started. It continually shows me new places, allows me to meet people and really gives me a chance to get outside.

My main hopes and goals with geocaching this year were pretty simple — don’t have the year with my fewest finds and try and find some fun with the hobby again.

It was a good year of geocaching.

It was a good year of geocaching.

I succeeded.

I finished with 432 finds for 2013 in 69 days of caching. That gave me an average of 6.3 finds per caching day and 1.2 finds per day overall. I am pretty happy about that, considering the schedule I rand in the summer months didn’t leave me a lot of time to cache. Maybe this summer will treat me a little better in regard to that.

Because of a cruise (to be mentioned in the travel section of this post), I also had the chance to add a new state (Florida) and a new country (Bahamas).

The 69 days, however, is my fewest days caching in a year since I started. I’ll have to try and amend that next year, too!

On the other side of it, I did place 22 geocaches this year (seven of which were events), bringing my total to 77 (I don’t count four, which I had adopted from another cacher). That brings me closer to 100 placed caches, a milestone I hope to cross this year.

I also have some goals I hope to accomplish in 2014, but I’ll cover those in a future post. In the end, 2013 was a pretty decent year for geocaching on my end. It was immensely helpful in getting me through some tough times, that’s for sure.

Disc golf

As many of you know, I’m somewhat of a disc golfer. Here’s the problem — I barely played this year. That also made it tough on the disc golf blog I run as when you’re not playing, it’s hard to find the interest to write about it.

It may be the only tournament I play in each year, but it's one I love to get involved with.

It may be the only tournament I play in each year, but it’s one I love to get involved with.

I played in a tournament in March — one I always play in. I love that tournament and look forward to continuing to play in it.

Outside of that, however, I didn’t play much at all. I know I played once in May and another time in September. I can’t remember any other time where I went and played. Pretty sad, right?

I had worked to try and get a small course locally, and despite some apparent support, it fell away and I haven’t heard anything. One can push only so hard for something before hearing the same thing over and over gets old and it becomes obvious that getting something like this — which could benefit many people — isn’t going to happen. So, for now, there’s nothing there. If that course had been installed, I think I’d be more into the disc golf world. As it is, it’s hard to stay interested because the nearest decent courses are an hour and change away.

Here’s to hoping 2014 is better for me with disc golf, that’s for sure. I have a whole heap of discs that need throwing!

Reading

One thing I didn’t do enough of is read.

I had set a goal of 25 books for 2013, which shouldn’t be too hard for me. Alas, I ended with fewer than 10. It was a mixture of a lot of things, but I never really got into the groove. I often go in spurts with reading. I’ll read a bunch of books, then take a month away, then go back to it. Often, though, I do my reading at night before bed. Now when I go to bed, I’m usually out pretty quickly, so that took it away.

I have a heap of books to read, though.

Travel

I won’t lie — I was a bit lucky when it came to travel this year.

I had the chance to go to one mega geocaching event in Massachusetts, making it an overnight stay. I then went on a cruise to the Bahamas as the photographer for a friend’s wedding. Finally, I got to hit the Jersey Shore this past fall, a weekend that turned out to be just what my mind and soul needed.

The geocaching trip to Massachusetts was outstanding, considering it was a mega event. We made it an overnight trip, so it was a good time. Truthfully, it was good to just get away and not worry about anything but a weekend of geocaching. The weather was a little steamy, but overall it was a fun weekend.

A wedding on the cruise, with a sunset in the background.

A wedding on the cruise, with a sunset in the background.

The biggest trip of the season was the cruise.

Going in, I was a tad nervous. Not just because I had never been on a cruise, but for financial reasons. Either way, I committed and got the time off from the summer job approved and went with the flow. I’m glad I did. It was everything I needed. Besides getting to serve as the photographer for a friend’s wedding, I had the opportunity to do something I had never done before and I really enjoyed it.

For those of you who have never cruised, it’s really quite cool. I can definitely see me doing it again. It’s not my true style of traveling as I don’t like to feel restricted, but I truly enjoyed the experience. I’d do it again, too. From the amazing food to being able to just relax and get lost in my thoughts, it was quite amazing.

Then, this past fall, I visited my aunt’s house at the Jersey Shore. Some family was there and my mother and her sisters had the chance to get together and enjoy hanging. I also got the chance to get out, see some things, hang with a friend and do my own thing. It was something, at that point, I really needed. I also think it helped me clear my melon for what ended up being the upcoming job interview.

That being said, it did help me clear my mind as I pushed forward in the job hunt. I always love going to the shore, especially in the off-season, It’s a good way to be able to relax and just stare out into the ocean. The weather could have been better, but beggars can’t be choosers, right?

I also got to hit up the zoo down there a couple of times. Add that to the Binghamton Zoo and I had two visited this year. Hopefully I can add more as I really do enjoy visiting zoos.

Brewing

Beer.

I love a good beer. In January, I started brewing my own. First with the Mr. Beer system, eventually going all-grain with one-gallon and two-gallon batches.

Nothing like making your own beer.

Nothing like making your own beer.

I’ve made several beers this year (and have many more to make) and really have enjoyed it. Along the way, I’ve learned a lot. And, after reading so much about the process, I really know I have a whole heap to learn and try.

That’s the beauty of brewing beer — there’s so much about it you can mess with, yet at the same time, it can be as simple as you want.

Unfortunately, one of the best beers I made this year was a Blueberry Red Ale. The problem? I carbonated it wrong. So every time one was opener, it shot out and a good 3/4 of the beer ended up being wasted.

Talk about a crappy outcome!

I can’t think of a beer I didn’t enjoy in some way or another. Some were better than others, but in the end, I was pretty happy making drinkable beer.

Relay for Life

This part will be somewhat quick. Our team dialed back a little this year. Our goal wasn’t about staying at the Relay all night and such, it was about raising money — and that’s what it’s all about, in my eyes. In fact, I believe (and have brought up several times) our local Relay goes for too long (6 p.m. on a Friday to like 9 or 10 a.m. Saturday). Once that sun comes up in the morning, people start to leave.

So our goal this year wasn’t to have a tent or anything, but to have our small group (seven of us) last as long as we could and move on. I personally don’t think that is a bad thing, considering our team raised upward of $2,000. Not too shabby for a seven-member team, eh?

Softball

It started out so well.

We won our first seven games and seemed like we were back on the right path. Things clicked. Then it all went downward. And, despite winning 10 games, we were bumped in the first round of the playoffs — after winning the first game of a best two-out-of-three series.

The worst part? There’s a chance the league will fold this year. And it’s not for a lack of teams. It’s for a lack of support in the city. They are cutting things (understandable), with rec programs being part of it. That’s not too smart, I don’t think, as rec programs can really help give a community an identity of sorts. Privatizing youth programs (and paying for that), as well as cutting adult programs doesn’t scream to the younger generation to tell them to move or stay in the city, that’s for sure.

Either way, it’s a shame because there are a lot of younger guys who still play the game. So, hopefully, it won’t get yanked away from them. The league is good, brings quite a bit of money to city businesses and is a good thing for the area. We’ll see come the summer what happens.

Job hunt

I’ll end the post with this topic.

The job hunt took me most of the year, but it ended pretty strong. I ended up getting a dream-type job and I’ve been happy since I started. I look forward to the future.

Still, what a tough road. I’m happy it ended in 2013, to make it somewhat of a decent year!

Over the next few days, I’ll look ahead to 2014, then get back to normal around here.

2013 Year in Review: Looking back (part 1)

January 7, 2014

Photography helped me keep my sanity throughout the year.

Photography helped me keep my sanity throughout the year.

As we’ve now closed the calendar on 2013 and start 2014, it’s time to take a peek back.

What a year, eh?

I honestly don’t know how to “rate” the year as it had parts of being some of the worst times in my life to some of the best. I’ve watched as friends and family have done well and, at the same time, I have battled some of the worst times in my life. But, as bad as much of the year was for me in certain terms, it wasn’t bad in others.

And it ended extremely awesome, in all aspects.

At the beginning of 2013, I set myself some goals. I’m not a resolution guy, but I will set goals and hope to finish them. Looking back, I didn’t fare too well. The goals were:

  • A job (success!)
  • Complete the HooHaa 52 (fail)
  • Read more (25 or more books) (fail)
  • Transform my blog (re-design, in-depth pieces, features, etc., 25 times per month) (push)
  • Visit more blogs (push)
  • Be happy (success)

In the end, I didn’t do everything I wanted, but I did enough. I found a job (yay!) and found a way to, once again, be happy. But I didn’t complete my own photo challenge (however, I did keep up on the “admin” side) or read enough books. And, though I think I did decent with the blog, I didn’t really fully transform, but I did try and find and visit more blogs. So I push those, which were listed Nos. 4 and 4A for me last year.

So, without further ado, let’s look back at 2013 and start putting it into the back of the memories.

Things didn’t start the greatest. The year started with me no longer receiving unemployment benefits and having no job lined up. I knew the reality of survival was going to include raiding my savings/retirement/investments as well as any tax return. I started looking anywhere for jobs. During the course of the year, I applied in many different places, including some major retailers (ie: big-box stores). The funny part is, I didn’t receive calls back.

Finding different things to make and being a new "foodie" of sorts has helped, too.

Finding different things to make and being a new “foodie” of sorts has helped, too.

I also fought something I had never really done — a downward spiral of not knowing where my life was going. Though I find myself quite head-strong in a mental way, I started wondering what was going on. I had emotional breakdowns at times. I cut myself off from some things. Though I stayed in contact with friends and such, I wasn’t always the same, upbeat person I usually am.

It’s not for a lack of trying to be more upbeat. The reality was this — I just didn’t want to see people. And that was more of a pride thing. If somebody treated me to lunch or invited me to dinner or paid for a beer or two, I always felt like it was a handout. And, honestly, knowing my friends, I realize it wasn’t that, rather them reaching out to me to help me get out a little, do something and try and lift my spirits.

Amazing what pride can do to a fella, eh?

Anyhoo…

So the first few months were shaky. Looking back at my calendar, I can see I didn’t do a lot. I usually put things on my Google calendar to remember. I think a lot of times, I pretty much stayed to myself. I’d go out sometimes for photos or maybe catch a wrestling show with friends. But one thing that kept me occupied was learning to brew beer. More on that later.

As March came around, I received my tax return somewhere in there. That helped with bills. Come the end of April, I was starting to figure how long I had based on what I had in savings/investments.

A couple of friends mentioned I should look into working at a local baseball camp. It’s a massive one up by Cooperstown, but it’s seasonal work. I needed to last that long. In April, I called a friend I knew who worked there. He told me what to do, so I sent in an application. I received a call back to head up to one of their job fairs and talk to people.

One great summer job.

One great summer job.

Here’s a funny tidbit — I didn’t plan on applying for photography. I wanted to try something new. When I got there, one of the workers checking people in asked me what other experience I had. I mentioned photography and he encouraged me to interview there. It was the first place I stopped and I’m glad I did. I was offered a spot with the park and in photography. I started with some quick training in late May and the position started June 1.

Talk about a much-needed bandage of sorts. Not only did it allow me to pay my bills throughout the summer, it gave me a new experience and one I truly enjoyed. I met and worked with some good people. I had planned on writing a full post about this experience, but it just never came about. So I’ll share parts here.

It was a good place to work. They treat you pretty well, give you chances to work more if you want it, and have a quality organization. My boss in photography was excellent. The people I worked with were good and I really enjoyed getting to know people. In fact, despite having a full-time job, I fully plan on trying to work there here and there this summer. Maybe a weekend when needed. I obviously won’t have it interfere with my new job, but I’d love to be able to do a little there as it’s a nice place.

Plus, it’s all baseball.

As I noted, it was a seasonal job, though. When the final week ended at the end of August, I was done. Unemployed, again. And I didn’t have enough time in to get unemployment again. I started applying for all sorts of stuff. Still nothing. I was trying to keep my head above water. Then it happened.

I got the call to interview for a dream job in mid-November. I had a great interview. I got the job. Things looked up.

IMG_4089

A new member joined the family — Cameron!

That same month, my niece, a junior in high school, was on a state champion soccer team. It was an exciting game where her school won, 2-1. It’s the second straight year they played in the state final, but she was a starter this year, so it was truly exciting.

December came and my brother and his wife had a child. A nephew for me. Sweet. The holidays were outstanding. Family and friends were all around. All of a sudden, things were good again. Santa even helped bring me a new car.

My nearly 2 1/2 years of unemployment, unhappiness and everything else ended. And I was in a good place again. It felt amazing.

So the year ended much better than it started, that’s safe to say.

I love my job, too. This is definitely a professionally challenging position and one I can’t wait to be a part of as it continues to grow.

In a nutshell, that was my year. Down to start, decent in the middle and up at the end. I do realize how lucky I am to have such great family and friends as they helped me in do many different ways.

Scorekeeping at a baseball game is still one of life's little things that I really enjoy.

Scorekeeping at a baseball game is still one of life’s little things that I really enjoy.

Truly, besides the friends and family aspect, I got by with little things. Going out to take photos. Finding a geocache. Doing inexpensive and fun things — such as going and picking apples, finding a cheap fair or festival, exploring new nature spots. Anything to keep my mind occupied. Finding a new recipe would help, or something else I could blog about. I spent my time applying for jobs — but the little things are what helped me keep my sanity throughout the year.

Going to a baseball game and keeping track with my new scorebook was always helpful, too. A cold beer and a hot dog while watching didn’t hurt, either.

In the second part of this post, which will run tomorrow, I’ll get a little more specific about some things — such as brewing beer, geocaching, disc golf, travel and a few other things.

2013 in Review: Blogging

January 6, 2014

It would be almost silly to have a full look back on 2013 and not discuss blogging. Though my major 2013 in Review post will run in the days following this post, I wanted to work on a post to give you my ups and downs with blogging for 2013.

This year had its ups and downs when it came to blogging, that’s for sure.

In regard to ups, I’m happy with how things grew. I always have known I wasn’t going to be one of those super over-the-top bloggers. I’m not going to draw hundreds or thousands of readers per day because, honestly, with a personal blog, it can be hard to do so. Instead, I kind of gauge success with getting a decent number of page views and being able to have fun and be part of a community.

Still, I like the slight bump in people looking at the blog.

I started keeping track of statistics in early 2011, a year in which I ended with 20,669 page views. In 2012, the blog received 23,925 views, followed by 26,017 in 2013.

That’s something be be quite happy with.

The year also gave me my highest one-month total, when there were 3,810 views in October. In fact, in six of the 12 months, I drew the highest amount of readers in said month since starting statistics.

Not too shabby.

I’ve also tried to stay more up on people who visit and comment. In the past few weeks, I’ve been pretty lax because of the new job. But I need to get back into it. In September, I posted a blogging pledge that I wanted to live by. And though a bit slow at times, I’ve been doing my best to go with these items.

Those items included:

  • Responding to each comment on my blog.
  • Visit other blogs during linkup or blog hops
  • Visit blogs of those who comment on my blog.

I haven’t been perfect, by any means. But I’m getting better. I have a blogging planner for 2014, so here’s to hoping that helps me continue to try and grow with my pledge.

For those who do it, blogging isn’t easy by any means. Especially, if you want to have some sort of consistency. I like to try and have at least five posts per week, if not a full week. So I tried to keep through that. I have found, however, that doing it with certain work-related things, can be hard.

So I need a routine, one in which I am building now.

But during the summer, when I was working as a photographer at a baseball camp, the hours, along with other extra-curricular activities, really made me kind of aloof when it came to blogging.

From January through May — months in which my life was job searches and the like, I averaged about 28 posts per month. When I worked at the baseball park for three months — June-August, I averaged 12 posts per month, which included a year-low eight posts in July. After that job ended, I had 28 posts in each September and October, followed by 20 and 21 in November and December. I started this new job in mid-November, so it seems the blogging routine I’ve tried to create is better than that of the one I had during the summer months.

WordPress, the software I use for blogging, also puts out a yearly “report” for each user so they can see what their numbers did etc. Some of the interesting tidbits include:

  • The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 26,000times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 10 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.
  • The busiest day was Oct. 17, when I received 844 views, with the top post that day being my one about the CZW House of Horrors match. I received some help, for sure, with several people with a lot of followers re-tweeting that post and sharing it on Facebook.
  • A ‘lil HooHaa was visited by people in 120 countries, with most coming from the United States. Canada and the United Kingdom were also top places where visitors visited from.

Shout outs

The year-end report also includes the top-five people who left comments on the site. So, I’d like to give them specific shout outs, with links to their blogs. I can’t thank people enough for commenting as it makes it fun to blog. I also know I need to reach out and comment more on other blogs in 2014.

These are in order. I give extra thanks to these five!

  1. Phil at The Regular Guy NYC.
  2. Ziva at Ziva’s Inferno.
  3. Paul at A Photo a Day.
  4. John at Nonameddufus.
  5. Nicky at We Work for Cheese.

Thank you all for visiting. It’s much appreciated!

Favorite posts

Below are links to my favorite posts of 2013. Because the CZW House of Horrors match is linked above, I’m leaving that one out as it may have cracked my top 10.

The rest are linked below, in no particular order.

I especially enjoyed these posts this year, so hopefully you’ll have some time to look back and check things out.

  • From January: Photos without an agenda
  • From January: Smooches and Stompeez
  • From February: Making blintzes
  • From March: Dunkin’ Siesta
  • From May: Baseball scorekeeping is still fun
  • From September: Carnival Pride cruise
  • From September: Beating the heat
  • From September: Age is but a number
  • From November: Walk through to the light
  • From December: Goodbye, old friend
  • Honorable mention: Gentlemania (January) and CITO event (April).

In the end, 2013 wasn’t a bad year for blogging on my end — especially with the personal blog. I have a lot of things I’d like to do in 2014 (a post will be coming up with week on that subject) to see what I can do to take this blog a little bit to the next level. I don’t need it to become some massive blog (though it would be cool), but to be able to find some more “blogging friends” or things like that would be awesome.

One thing that helped this year was becoming one of the New York representatives for the Northeast Bloggers Network. This has allowed me the chance to find some new blogs, get to know many more bloggers and be part of a really cool blogging community. The reality is there are a lot of bloggers out there and groups like this — as well as another I joined, Bloppy Bloggers — have been so good for me in 2013.

There were some highlights, too. It was the year I started the HooHaa Photo Blogging Challenge, a monthly photo challenge/linkup. It’s been a whole heap of fun, and hopefully it will continue to grow. I finished the writing challenge at We Work for Cheese for the second time. There were a few other challenges as well, so it was enjoyable.

Still, it’s time to turn the page on 2013 when it comes to blogging. It was a pretty solid year in blogging, so here’s to making the next year even better.

Harper is counting down to Santa Paws! You know, Harper is counting down to Santa Paws!

You know, of course, Santa Paws travels with Santa Clause, making sure to find treats and toys for all the good little doggies! (We know they are all deserving, right?) So, Harper put out some milk for the big guy, carrots for Rudolph and the reindeer, and special cookies for Santa Paws! She is ready!

The colors in the sky were fantastic and the scene was nice looking (though, to be fair, I drove by what I think would have been a better scene -- the valley and hills full of snow etc.)

I look at her and sometimes still can’t believe I look at her and sometimes still can’t believe I have her. It’s been a year and four months and she makes me smile and laugh more each day. It’s amazing how much a dog changes your look on life, and how much joy they can bring.

This one is recent from the courthouse square in Delhi. We had some pretty good fall colors this year.

I had Harper so not a lot I could do, but I managed to get the cart off the chair. (See second photo) This was in a local park.

A video looking at my first year and a half of owning a golden retriever, my first dog. It's had its ups and downs, but I've truly loved the ride and look forward to the future.

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
