2013 in Review: Capturing life with the DSLR

January 3, 2014

This will be the final of my video posts for a year in review. Next week, I’ll shift to my normal big post, one about blogging and then a couple of looking forward to 2014 posts.

After that, back to business as usual.

I actually am hoping to be more organized with the blog this year, which includes planning out things a bit more and doing some different and fun things.

Anyhoo…

This post features a shorter video (about seven minutes or so) with my favorite images I took with my DSLR this year. There’s a mixture of a lot of things in here, so hopefully you’ll enjoy. As with my iPhone photo video, I selected music I enjoyed this year at some point. (I also realize this video has a few duplicate photos … don’t know how I missed them, but … ya know).

2013 in Review: Video captures a little slice of life

January 2, 2014

OK, allow me to be honest — this video could be way better.

This is basically a snapshot — through videos — of my 2013. I know I took many more videos, but I just can’t find them all. The video — as it stands — is about 12 minutes long. There’s no music with it, as most of the videos have their own sounds.

Still, even without some videos I know I took, this is a pretty fun look back at 2013. From a singing disc golfer to clips from the cruise I was on to little iPhone videos, it has some interesting stuff on here.

This is the second in a series of posts looking back at 2013 and looking forward to 2014. I’ve adjusted the schedule a bit, as I had other things I needed to post on certain days. Tomorrow, as well as next week will have posts looking at all aspects of the year as well.

One thing I’d like to do is learn my camera’s video function a little more this year and have some better videos for 2014. That might mean the year in review video will be longer, but I’m OK with that. I realize not everybody will sit through it, but I know many who will — so it’s kind of a catch-22. In the end, though, if I do what is in my mind, it will capture my year a bit more.

Anyway, without further delay … here’s my look at 2013 in videos.

2013 in Review: Images on the go paint a picture of my year

December 27, 2013

Despite knowing I’ll be changing the dates a bit because of previous blogging commitments, today starts my look back at 2013.

This year really had its ups and downs. Between probably reaching one of the lowest points in my life, it’s ending on a super high note — one in which I’ve really been waiting to have happen.

Still, even knowing what I have been through, photography has been a big part of my life this year. Whether with my phone (often) or my regular DSLR, I captured a lot of things I’ll remember fondly.

This first installment is a video. It’s about 16:30 long, and features hundreds of images I took this year with my iPhone. Many are “Instagram” images, others are not really processed at all. These images really paint a picture of my year, which is what I was trying to capture.

The video has a soundtrack, too, of songs I kind of got into this year and I tried to make them pretty upbeat and such for the video.

I hope you have the time to sit back, watch the video and enjoy. I’ll have the rest of the series starting Jan. 1 (as it looks now, anyway).

You view that tube!

January 24, 2012

It’s been a while since I dived into YouTube to share some of the finest things I’ve found lately, so let’s take a peek at some fun stuff, shall we?

As you know, YouTube is a wonderful place on the web. You can find so much there. So much so that you can easily waste several hours without even realizing it.

Sometimes, however, the things I see boggle my mind.

The beauty of a website such as YouTube as it shows human nature at its finest — from crazy to funny to straight up nuts.

I am hoping to bring you some of the better clips I’ve watched recently. Unfortunately, the one clip I wanted to show you is no longer up on YouTube because it’s apparently being held for a copyright claim. There wasn’t music involved, so I’m assuming the person who uploaded it was not the owner of the video.

This first one though, is really cool. The idea of this is that they got a bike, all decked out, and locked it to a bike stand in New York City.

Then they left it there.

For a full year.

Along the way, they took a photo of the spot every day for that year — quite the 365 project, eh?

Very cool stuff. Check it out.

This next one is kind of insane.

Apparently, wherever this mall is, some kid decided to up the wrong side of the escalator. When he got to the top, he falls. However, somebody see this unfolding (maybe somebody who works there?) and runs to be under the kid before he falls.

The security cameras capture all of this from different angles, which is kind of wild.

I echo the guy talking on the video — where are the kid’s parents?

Oh, by the way — future note to mascots performing before or at halftime of a game that’s not professional (or wherever you are a mascot normally)…

Don’t shatter the glass!

I don’t know what to think of this video. The beginning is funny and catchy. Then the one line catches you off guard. Then you see the point of the video. Interesting. I’ll look forward to any of you giving me thoughts on this one.

Busted by a dashboard camera!

I love the look on the face of the lady… almost like “Ah…crap!”

If I was driving down a highway and saw this, I’m not sure what I would think…

But something tells me I’d be dialing 911.

Finally, I leave you with a video uploaded by ESPN. It’s the piece they did when Joe Paterno died Sunday. It’s a very good piece and shows Paterno through the years and touches on many things. It’s well worth seeing, if you haven’t seen it already.

Notes from my Noodle: Nov. 18 edition

November 18, 2011

Does anyone remember the old roller derby that used to be on television?

They had those high-banked tracks. It was hard-hitting action and pretty fun to watch. And when the train wrecks happened and there was a people pile up, it was fun.

Well, it’s back to an extent.

I didn’t realize roller derby still existed. Maybe not in the big way it used to be, but it’s around. When I was at a wrestling show a while back, I saw a sign for it. So I checked out the Central New York group and figured when the season started, I’d find a way to check it out.

Turns out one of the local towns has a team. And they open tonight.

So a couple of us are going over to check it out. I’m hoping to take some photos of the event, but I don’t know what the lighting is like. Either way, I’m looking forward to watching it live. They don’t used banked tracks — it’s all flat. But either way, it should hopefully prove to be entertaining!

I just hope there’s something that explains the rules!

I am fully sold on the iPhone 4s.

I loved it before because of the capabilities. The camera is very solid and the apps have been great. Call quality, too, is pretty strong.

But the past few days, I’ve messed with the video and I’ve found it shockingly good. The sound isn’t bad. The quality is solid. I could see doing a lot more with the phone in regard to video.

Below is a video I took yesterday. Darren tried to send a disc across Hodges Pond in Neahwa Park. Unfortunately, for him, he didn’t make it. The rest tells itself through video.

I will be testing out more later, but I like the video so far. It might drain my battery some, but ya know…

I just need to figure out if I can change settings and how to work with it a little as right now I just know how to turn it to video and record.

I’ve finally been starting to catch up on processing photos. So I’ve been uploading a bunch each day to my Flickr account. Feel free to go over and check the latest editions, which include more shots from my South Jersey trip, 2CW wrestling in Binghamton, my November 12 of 12, and some others. Upcoming things will include the rest of the Jersey photos, some flag football and more.

I finally got some new sneaks for my car. One thing that is hard when you are unemployed is squirreling money away so you can get things you need (such as tires etc). But I went and got some on the car yesterday and I could see the difference.

Goodbye racing slicks!

I just have to stay on top of getting them balanced and rotated. I got them at Wal-Mart, so they have the lifetime free balance and rotation. I can dig that and I just have to get there and have it done every 5,000-6,000 miles.

Next up? The service the car needs.

***

A week or two back, we got a bit of a warm spell in my area.

So much so that I had the chance to get out and wear shorts. A pretty sweet deal without a doubt. I had been itching to throw a few discs, but I didn’t get anywhere to do it.

Still, disc golf was on my mind a bit.

Though I am not going to go into it too much, I’ve been working on a pretty cool disc golf project. The leg work for it got under way and I’ve had the chance to talk to a bunch of people in conjunction with it.

Once the timing is right, I’ll announce some things here, of course.

Needless to say, it’s something I’m extremely excited about. It’s been a good diversion from the real world at times. As I continue my job hunt, using this to take a break has been very good for the mind. And it’s given me something to get a bit pumped about.

I just hope that when it comes to fruition, it will have all been worth it!

Speaking of disc golf, I am hoping to get a round or two in over the next week as next Saturday (the one following Thanksgiving) is a doubles tournament. It’s a pretty neat looking thing. I’ve not played in one, so I am looking forward to it. Darren and I are teaming up, so hopefully we can do some damage!

I went this morning for a beard trim. It’s only 30-40 minutes, but it’s nice to have it done. A nice shaping, thinning it out a bit, a hot towel and a straight razor.

Nice.
