Messing with the blogging world since 2005

30 Days of Writing: The other one (13/30)

June 13, 2012

A disc rattles the chains.

This post is written in conjunction with the 30 Days of Writing, a blog challenge devised by Nicky and Mike at “We Work For Cheese.” I’ll be participating throughout the month of June. If interested, you can see my post with the details of the challenge.

Please note that some of these posts will be serious, some will be normal, and some will be an attempt at humor. This one is a normal blog post!

The other one?

Another one of those crazy topics that seem to really work people over and make no sense!

It seems to me that when Nicky and Mike were coming up with ideas for this blogging challenge, they had a little too much with the Guinness cheese and that might have really messed with their minds.

So now they have this topic about “The other one?”

<sigh>

I’m sure this won’t be the last time over the next 17 days that I will shake my head in wonderment on how I got myself into this challenge and wonder what the hell I was thinking, but I digress.

I guess I’ll use this space as a bit of a way to show something else.

My "other one."

I have another blog.

Yes, the other one. It’s a niche blog, however. I’ve had this blog since 2005 — in a few different forms. It’s been like this (WordPress) for several years. I’ve also had it as part of a discussion forum I used to have and on Blogger, before moving permanently to this home.

My main domain name — hoohaa.com — now directs to this blog. (Looking back, it probably would have made more sense just to use the hoohaa.com domain as the blog, but I wasn’t thinking!) I love this blog and try and work at it as much as I can.

But, the reality is, this is a personal blog. I do things like this blog challenge or things going on in my world or things that I love to do.

At the end of 2011, I had a bigger idea. I wanted to do more with disc golf.

For those who don’t know what disc golf is, it’s Frisbee golf. You use a disc and throw it at above-ground targets, usually a basket and chains. It’s played like golf. The thing with the game is it’s a great way to get outdoors with friends and family and have some fun. It can get competitive, too, with tournaments and a pro tour, but in the overall scheme of things, it’s fun.

I have blogged a bit about disc golf. In fact, the most page views I received in one day was disc golf related.

Searching for several months for disc golf blogs showed me there wasn’t any specific ones that were updated regularly and such. So, I thought about it. I talked to some friends. I talked to some people in the disc golf world. I decided to start a disc golf blog.

We launched Rattling Chains in early March.

The site is really something. We have a good following. We’ll have contests to give away discs and other things. We try and have entertaining and creative content. There are four of us who contribute to the site on a regular basis. We have a couple of others who contribute when they can and we’re working on having a few more.

The hits aren’t amazing or anything, but the site continues to grow and get more popular. We’ve had some good feedback, so that’s been good.

I have strong feelings for both of these blogs. I’m more emotionally invested in this one because it’s where I can kind of be me — and it’s my own personal space on the web. At Rattling Chains, it’s a place for me to still write in a journalistic way, do some editing, do some “boss” things and kind of have my finger still in sports writing.

Go visit!

Also, it has been a good thing to see what it’s like to build a niche blog. We don’t make money and we’re not sure we ever will. It’s given us full independence to voice opinions, give reviews and write stories we feel will be entertaining and/or compelling for disc golfers to read.

Both blogs are spare time sort of things. They aren’t jobs. And what I like about that is when the real world takes over at times, you can kind of move around with the blogs.

This was my first, though.

And Rattling Chains is my “other one.”

Both of them are quite special in their own way and I hope readers enjoy each one.

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.

The theme for Week 3 of the 52-week video challenge was "Show your process of making something." Alas, I didn't get the time to do what I wanted to do, so I attacked something I filmed over the summer that I kept putting off.
