solo gaming

One Meeple: OctoDice – a light game to quench your thirst

August 9, 2016

It has been a few months since I’ve done any gaming, whether it’s solo or with a group. I’ve added a few games over that time, but I just haven’t had the time to sit down and learn some of them.

After a long road trip for baseball, I realized I needed to get a few games in. And something light that I could play in about 20 minutes and solo is what I was seeking.

Ready for a solo game of OctoDice.

Ready for a solo game of OctoDice.

Enter OctoDice, a game published by AEG.

From the rule book:

As scientists and engineers on board of the underwater research station “AquaSphere”, you are facing a big crisis: your most important tools, the bots, have stopped working!

It is time to take matters into your own hands–but quickly! After all, you want to have a major scientific breakthrough before the competition does. In the short time you have, you must expand your labs, analyze crystals, dock new submarines, reactivate the bots, and catch octopods.

Be careful though! You never know whether the competition is spying on you…

The game is quick and dice-based, so already a good thing. The mechanics are pretty simple, too. Roll the six dice, set any two aside. Roll the remaining four and, again, set two aside. Then roll the final two.

You then have to decide how to use the dice and score points based on the actions you choose.

The thing with games like this, though, is you are playing against yourself and trying to get your highest point total possible. This game has some options on a direction to take. You can aim for one part of things to score, or spread yourself out. I like that because it makes it so the game doesn’t always feel the same. Now, I am not sure I’d want to play this 100 times in a row, but I do like how it plays and it’s quick enough to satisfy the want to play a solo game.

I did end up playing the game three times on the night I played it – scoring 24, 34, and 29 points, respectively. Each time I took a different path and liked how things played out.

My highest scoring game, thus far.

My highest scoring game, thus far.

Those points should be a little higher, however. During the rounds, if you get so many octopods during a turn, you score points. I had it several times in the third (which is solo only) round, but there’s no actual spot for it – so I figured it was a wasted turn. Well, it turns out you do get those points as a thread on BoardGameGeek.com showed it.

Good to know for the future.

I like the theme of the game and the scoresheets that come with the game are really nice. There are plenty of them, too. Though I have a hard time believing I’ll use them all any time soon, I do hope there is a way to order another one down the line – just in case. It will make life a lot easier if I can get one if it’s needed, that’s for sure.

The dice aren’t the vest of quality, though. I don’t think I’ll use them enough to ruin them, but I could see if you were playing multi-player games where they might get worn out a little.

Overall, the game was fun. I would like to try it with two players and then maybe 3-4, but if I keep it as just a solo game, I won’t be disappointed. It’s a fun little filler game and one I can see me playing when I am looking for a quick game to play.

One Meeple: Looking at solo gaming

April 22, 2016

In my collection of board games, I have many that have solo variants.

It’s not that I don’t have a group to play with, rather when I’m not mixed in with that group, there’s not always people around to play board games with. That’s fine. But sometimes I also want to play a game, so the best way can often be solo.

And there are some really good solo games, too. Heck, even some great multi-player games (Le Havre, Nations etc.) have some great solo variants.

I can't win at Shephy.

I can’t win at Shephy.

So it’s time to start playing them a bit more.

But besides doing it and often taking photos of the games, I don’t blog much about it. There are times where it becomes almost a misadventure in playing games. Maybe I am totally looking at a rule wrong, or the “virtual” opponent is just whipping me.

And I’ve often wondered if it would be humorous to blog about. And now, I figure, what the hell?

So, welcome to “One Meeple.”

The first true post about this probably won’t be for a little bit. I’m actually reading rules for a few games so I can get some things under my belt a bit more before I start. But, I also needed a post for this day. And I had created a header logo already … so I needed to use it, right?

The reality is I don’t plan on winning too often when it comes to games. There are some solo games (Friday, for one) that I haven’t come close to winning. Shephy is another. And it drives me nuts as I keep trying to beat it.

But there are some fun games I need to really learn – like Hostage Negotiator. I have several with newer solo variants and I want to get playing them more. This will hopefully push me.

I might even do a couple of posts on here about some board games on the iPad that I play against computer opponents. I do tend to get whipped there, too!

In the somewhat near future, I’ll start this feature. Who knows how often I’ll run it, but I’d like to try to have one every 2-3 weeks or so. That’s why it would be nice to get a few under my belt, so I can get some writing done with them – and realize how bad at solo gaming I am.

This should be interesting. And hopefully fun!

Have a great weekend ahead… and play some games!

Solo board gaming: Finding ways to play when other people aren’t around

February 11, 2016

Over the past few months, I’ve really started discovering solo board gaming.

The group I play games with usually meets once a week on Saturdays. Though I’d love to be there every week, the reality is I sometimes have other plans. That means it could be a few weeks before I get to sit down and play a few games with others.

I enjoy the hobby of board games, so sometimes I just want to play a game or two and there might not always be people around to do so.

Shephy is quickly becoming my best solo gaming experience.

Shephy is quickly becoming my best solo gaming experience.

That has led me to look more into solo gaming, so I can get my fix at different points when I’d like to play a few games. I have some multi-player games (such as Nations and Le Havre) that have solo variants. I’ve only tried the Nations one once (it’s solid), but I’m not always in the mood to set up a game like that.

I own Friday, which is a high-rated solo game, but it consistently whips me.

So I needed to look around a bit more. In fact, it’s become something that I look at when buying games – is there a solo variant and does it interest me?

Solo gaming is a definitely not for everybody. There are some games I don’t think I’d enjoy with the solo variant. Some don’t have a “winner” per say, rather you are looking to achieve a certain level etc.

I have several games I need to learn the solo variants, though, such as Imperial Settlers. I haven’t played that game since last year’s ConnCon, and this might be a way to get it to the table, if even my own.

It’s a good way to get a gaming fix.

There’s something about the bigger games that scares me off, though. I’m not too sure what it is, but part of it is definitely the setup and cleanup. I’m hoping to eventually have a bit more time for gaming in the next few months, so maybe it needs to be a more proactive approach, such as setting up a game the night before, then having it available when I come home from work.

Until then, I’ve picked up a few card-based games that are fun in the solo world. I picked up all three games in the “Oniverse,” and so far I like what I’ve seen. I’m trying to tackle them one at a time so I can truly understand them and I’ve only brought one to the table so far – Onirim.

Dice City is a good multi-player game that plays well solo.

Dice City is a good multi-player game that plays well solo.

I’ve had the chance to play that one four times (and beaten it just once), but it’s challenging and fun. The idea is to get the keys to unlock the eight doors. It’s not easy to do so, but it’s doable. There are also seven expansions with the game and I need to start figuring them out, though I’m having fun with the base game.

The other two in the Oniverse – Sylvion and Castellion – both look amazing. The artwork in all three games is really awesome. I’ve yet to tackle either of those games yet, but I’m looking things over and plan on playing them soon. Sylvion looks really interesting and I like that Castellion is a solo tile-laying game.

I’ve also played a few multi-player games that have been decent solo, specifically Flip City and Dice City, with the latter being pretty cool and one that took long enough that it felt like a pretty cool gaming experience.

Recently, I also added Hostage Negotiator to my collection. A strictly solo game, the game has you as a negotiator and working to free hostages. I haven’t played it yet as I’m still going through the rules, but I’m excited to get going with it. There are expansions, too, so if I really enjoy the game I plan on ordering those.

But the one game that I’ve really enjoyed lately was Shephy. It’s a small and fun card game where you are trying to put a big enough herd of sheep together before the bad sheep get too big of a herd. It’s challenging (I haven’t won yet), and it’s made as a solo game. I had seen photos of the game on Instagram and then went searching for it.

Turns out it’s not the easiest of games to find.

After searching the Board Game Geek forums, I found somebody who had been selling some and had them. I ordered one and had it a week or two later (came from Europe) and I was off and running with it. It’s a fun little game, easy to travel with and doesn’t take too long. At some point, hopefully I’ll even beat the game!

Solo gaming has been a lot of fun. Would I rather play in a group and such? Sure. But it’s also nice to know there are great solo games out there for those who want that aspect of playing board games.

How about you? Do you solo game? If so, what are some of your go-to picks?

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
