snow

It’s time for you to go, Winter

February 18, 2015

I’m so over winter

This is something many people in the Northeast are saying in recent weeks, that’s for sure. But I look at it in a different way. It’s not just because of the mounds of snow that might not disappear until July. It’s not the arctic temperatures that are more suited for Antarctica or the North Pole than in the Northeast.

Nope.

Winter might be pretty, but it gets old.

Winter might be pretty, but it gets old.

Then, why, you may ask? Well, it’s simple — I’m sick of being sick.

Allow me to count the ways I’ve been sick since the start of winter, which in my area is usually well before the Dec. 21 “official” date.

  • Common cold (usual)
  • Flu (unusual, especially considering I get a flu shot)
  • 24-hour bug (unusual)
  • Stomach bug (unusual, and it piggybacked the 24-hour bug)

One thing to notice there — I usually only get since once a year or so, and it’s usually a doozy of a common cold. It’s something that will last about a full week and usually follows the same pattern. This year has been different.

The last two happened over the past weekend and forced me to burn a sick day. I’m actually writing this during that sick day, covered up on a recliner with my “writing” laptop. I’ve barely been on a computer since this past Friday night, so I’m trying to catch up on e-mails and other things.

Oh yeah, and it’s still bitterly cold out, though it’s been nice to peek outside and see sun and blue skies the past two days. I know better though — that’s just enough to pull you outside and then you freeze your tush off.

By the time this publishes, I’ll be back to work — thankfully.

For those who know me, I’m not much for taking sick days. At my previous job, I rarely took one, despite knowing I should at certain times. I felt guilty, even though me being there was probably worse than me not being there. Maybe it is how things were instilled in me.

Remember last year? That’s when I had the foot saga and had surgeries and such. I felt guilty taking sick days. I still do. But, with this week being a vacation week for the places I work (at least for students and teachers), I figured it wasn’t so bad if I called in sick when I actually needed that day. I’ve been exhausted!

What stinks about this whole bout is that I didn’t have the desire to be near a computer, let alone blog. That meant nothing up for the past few days, which is fine. Alas, it also broke a streak as I had posted something daily since late November. Now, it’s time to get back to the grind and get on another streak! Probably next week, though, as I might not be every day this week as I still get my “legs” back under me.

But, back to my original point — it’s time for winter to go. In my area, February traditionally seems to be our “harsh” month. Hopefully that holds true and March brings the upward trend of no snow and better temperatures. Allow this snow to slowly (we don’t need spring weather and rain or we’ll see some serious flooding in some areas) go away and the spring bloom to come to us… I think we’ve (and many parts of the Northeast) have earned it.

Photo Blogging Challenge (Dec. 2014): ‘Tis the Season

December 30, 2014

‘Tis the season!

Indeed it is! I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season! It’s been pretty good on this end, despite my camera faltering and me deciding to dive in and get a new camera for myself.

Ho! Ho! Ho!

And then I almost forgot today’s date and was about to post Part 2 of my year in review (which will now be on Jan. 1). Thankfully, I looked at the blog planner and was holy cow!

So this month’s theme was ‘Tis the Season. I am looking forward to seeing everybody’s links and posts. I think this theme has the chance to be really good and I had heard many new people talking about joining, so hopefully we get a bunch.

No matter what you celebrate or don’t, this theme was very open-ended. I went a little more traditional in a sense and like the images I chose. I hope you do as well.

Remember to link up and then try and comment on other people’s blogs to keep this community fun!

Without anymore blabbing, here’s my five.

1. Winter

In the Northeast, ‘Tis the Season for snow. Well, sometimes. We had a green Christmas with temps in the high 40s… but a week or so earlier, we had snow.

Brrrr!

Brrrr!

2. Mmmm…

What is this season without awesome food… such as these bacon-wrapped scallops?

Yes, they were awesome!

Yes, they were awesome!

3. A new chair

Cameron seemed OK with just sitting on the presents.

Chilling.

 4. Open it!

Cam didn’t really get into the opening, but he did make an attempt a few times. Next year!

Open!

Open!

5. Tasty!

‘Tis the season for some fine spirits!

Happy holidays!

That’s my five for the month. And, now it’s your turn.

If you took part this month, make sure you link up below. And for those who participated, make sure you try and get to other people’s blogs and comment and visit so we can continue to grow this challenge (even here)! Don’t forget, too, to come back and visit tomorrow, December 31 and see the theme for January!

NOTE: I set up a Facebook group for those who participate in the challenge and are interested. I’ll post any announcements there and hopefully it can be a place where things are discussed and some interaction etc. You can access it here.

Snow can be a pain in the rear, but also amazingly beautiful

December 15, 2014

I know when the calendar officially says winter is here, but Mother Nature doesn’t care about that date — especially in the Northeast.

It’s winter here. All one has to do is look outside and they know. Winter is here.

And you know, during this time of the year, I don’t mind it. The snow is nice through the holidays.

On Saturday, I hit up a geocaching event I was hosting. On the way over, I noticed some seriously awesome looking snow-covered trees and such. I knew on my way back, I would want to take some snaps of what I was seeing. It had been way too long since I used my actual camera, so I took it out and had some fun.

Though, let me say, it was cold!

The thing about the winter? It can be striking to look at, though I never think I capture the true beauty of it with a camera.

Either way, I wanted to share a few images with you to start this week off on Monday morning.

Enjoy.

Northeast Bloggers January photo challenge: Snow

January 24, 2014

Snow and winter and covered bridges.

Snow and winter and covered bridges.

As you all know, I’m a sucker for photo challenges.

One blogging group – The Northeast Bloggers Network – that I am part of has a monthly photo challenge. One photo with a theme.

This month’s theme? Snow. Like I had an issue with finding something in regard to that, right? There’s plenty of snow around here. However, I’ve decided to go with one photo that has snow … but it’s more of a winter scene I love to try and capture each year.

nephotoIn our area, we have some great and historic covered bridges. I’m a huge fan of these bridges and always love to try and capture them in every season. As I was driving home from work, I passed this one and saw this picture.

I had to turn around.

Of course I snapped a bunch of photos with the phone (and shared on Instagram), but I also pulled out my main camera and did some shots, trying to capture the winter feel of it being cold and crisp, which I think I did.

I always think winter helps the blue sky pop that much more and I’m quite happy I turned around. The sun was in a perfect spot, the sky was brilliant and the snow was enough to give a winter feel, but not hamper the shot. Though, I can’t lie, I would have liked to have seen a little more snow on the road as I think it would have added just a bit more to the photo.

In the end, I am quite excited with the shot and can see me blowing this one up and framing it to hang down the line.

Go. Away. Mother Nature.

January 23, 2014

Sheesh.

Why is it when I have a little weekend trip planned, the weather gets all stupid.

I’m supposed to be going to Pittsburgh this weekend, leaving as soon as I’m done work on Friday. As per normal, I planned geocaches for the way down and while there.

The forecast? I bet you can’t guess.

OK, maybe you can.

Some snow. Cold weather. It seems like if I drive straight through Friday night, it should be OK. But there’s some snow coming in Friday night/Saturday morning. That kind of makes the morning difficult.

Now, I got a massively good deal on a nice hotel. So if I have to chill and relax a little extra, I can do that. But I have plans, so I want to be able to do them.

The worst part is it’s looking like snow showers and such throughout the weekend. That’s not bad to deal with when kind of being in one spot. But I want to get around a little. And if all goes well, there’s an event Sunday night. I’d be heading home after that — so leaving Pittsburgh at about 11:30 p.m.

If it’s snowy and such for a 5+-hour ride, that’s going to stink. Especially because I am planning on being home by 5 a.m., sleep for a few hours and then start a whirlwind day (I have it off) of three appointments (dentist, eye doctor, regular doc).

So, come on, Mother Nature, throw a guy a bone here.

It is still just Wednesday night, so I’m sure things can change for the better. Or the worse. But with hotels already paid for (Priceline) and tickets for one event on Saturday night already purchased, it’s a trip that’s happening or I’m eating a few bucks, which I’d rather not do. So, it looks like I’ll be attempting this and hoping for the best.

I won’t lie, though. It would be awful nice if Mother Nature could change things up. I’ll take bitter temperatures. Just no snow, please. At least not until I get home.

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.

The theme for Week 3 of the 52-week video challenge was "Show your process of making something." Alas, I didn't get the time to do what I wanted to do, so I attacked something I filmed over the summer that I kept putting off.
