relay for life

Relay for Life plea

March 27, 2017

It’s that time of year again.

Each April, our area does the local Relay for Life. For those who know, the Relay is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

This year’s Relay is April 29.

Though I’ve stopped being an active participant, I still obviously try and help with fundraising. My mother still participates and each year attempts to raise about $1,000. She’s not part of a team – she does it on her own.

Each year, I post something here in hopes that people might consider donating to the cause. Any amount helps her reach her goal.

This cause is obviously near and dear to my family as my father died from cancer. I have several friends who have battled this awful disease. I know others who have died from it as well.

Let’s keep trying to find a cure.

As in the past, you can either do a straight donation, or dedicate luminaries ($10 each). If you dedicate luminaries, let me know and I will attempt to get a photo. It’s not always easy to find them all though, so I can’t promise – but will do my best.

The link to donate to my mother’s Relay page is: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLCY17EA?px=36489160&pg=personal&fr_id=79215.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give. I still hold out hope that there will be a cure for cancer in my lifetime.

Relay for Life coming fast!

April 21, 2016

Consider this a last-second plea.

Well, it’s not really last second per say, but close enough.

Our local Relay for Life is being held April 30. The event has been going for more than 10 years and is a very successful event. A few years ago, they even reached the $1 million raised mark. Pretty cool, right?

I’m no longer an active participant in the local Relay (though I do try and get up there and walk a little bit and see what they are doing), but I support it as much as I can. My mother, however, is still active in it and this year, she’s raising money again as well as being part of the organizing committee. Even more interesting, though, is that she is her own team, thus meaning she’s raising money all on her own.

I’m hoping some blogging friends and readers will see it in their hearts to donate to this team. I know I’ve donated to several people’s causes when I come across them because I believe in doing good and hope that my dollars will help as much as possible. So, if you read this and you can donate – I’d appreciate whatever you can give.

Anyway, her goal was $500 (which, for the record, she’s already made). However, it would be awesome to see her reach $1,000. She’s made that level the past few years, so hopefully she can do it again. The website show’s she’s at $850 right now, so I think it’s definitely doable. I’d love to see her get even higher.

You can visit her donation page by clicking here. (Or, visit: http://goo.gl/ttt7Zg)

The Relay for Life is one of the biggest fundraisers for the American Cancer Society each year. I’m sure most who will read this have been affected in one way or another by cancer, be it yourself or somebody you know. So, if you can, please consider donating.

I appreciate anything you can give!

Relay for Life: A plea to give if you can!

March 28, 2016

Hi folks.

I know a week or two ago, I posted about this. I’m hoping if I do it again (and maybe one other time before the event), I can encourage a few people to donate.

American_Cancer_Society_Relay_For_Life_Logo

My mother is in the local Relay for Life. She usually does well fundraising, so hopefully that trend will continue this year. I am hoping some of my blogger readers/friends will consider giving a little as well. It doesn’t have to be a ton (though that is always nice, too!), but every little bit helps. I try and do the same when I see other bloggers doing some cool things for charity, so I figured this would be a good place to go.

The event is in late April and her goal is a modest $500. Hopefully she can easily reach that (she’s at $50 now, and I always give $100, so hopefully more will come in!) and maybe go past it.

With help, hopefully she’ll do as she did last year, which I believe was more than $1,000.

She’s also not on a team per say, as she’s doing this on her own.

You can visit her donation page by clicking here.

Relay for Life season: Please consider donating!

March 15, 2016

It’s that time of year again, folks.

Relay for Life.

I’ve done this post several times before. But it’s something I still believe in and hope you can help.

Though not an active participant, I still try and help my mother raise money. Last year, if I remember correctly, she raised more than $1,000.

With everybody’s help, maybe she can do it again.

She’s not on a team, per say, rather an individual. So anything you might be able to give would be highly appreciated.

Thanks to all who donated (oh yeah, and the winner is …)

May 2, 2013

Relayers walk during the Luminary Ceremony.

Our annual Relay for Life is in the books.

And, for a change, we actually had decent weather. Despite it getting chilly at night, there was no rain (or snow) and if you kept moving, you kept warm. All in all, not to shabby.

That being said, if it was a day later, it was in the high 40s/low 50s the following night!

I initially got involved with the Relay in the memory of my father.

Anyway, the Relay was a success.

For those who don’t know the full story with the Relay, basically, teams raise money for the American Cancer Society and on the night of the event, set up around a track or something shaped like one. Then members of the team walk throughout the night. At one point, for an hour or two, the lights go out and the glow of luminaries light up the track.

I’ve taken part in this event since 2008 and am always amazed at how people give each year.

Our team, this year, was small. We had seven people and we combined to raise more than $2,500!

I was pretty stoked about that.

Personally, my account showed nearly $1,200, which I am super pumped about. For all of you who donated, please accept my thanks. I can’t express those thanks enough in words.

This disease touches millions of people. Hopefully they will eventually find a cure.

I actually started the fundraising this year a little late. That meant I also started the team late and we all got a late jump.

That didn’t seem to matter.

Our team stepped up and raised a whole heap of money. We raised more than many teams with more members. Way too cool. And to everyone who donated to me — or to others on the team — thanks so much. I am super stoked with what we were able to accomplish.

To be fair, too, we’re not all as young as we once were. Staying at these events all night is impossible. So most of us ducked out by 1 a.m. or so. The local Relay runs quite long, so many do this. When the final three of us left that night, there definitely wasn’t a member from each team walking on the track, as one is supposed to do. Alas, in my eyes, walking the track isn’t the most important thing here — raising money is. I look at what we did and I am really proud of it.

And next year, we’ll do the same.

The winner is…?

Now, let’s get on what people probably want to hear. Well, those of you who donated to the cause.

For those who donated to me or my mother’s Relay account, you were entered to win a fantastic quilt or the pillow.

Honestly, with all the donations we received, I truly wish I could give away something to everybody who donated. I really do. Alas, it’s just not possible.

Those who donated received one entry per $5 they donated. We ran all the names this morning through the Random.org generator and the winners are…

Quilt: Mike Davis

Pillow: Alma Reynolds

Congratulations to both winners, you will be contacted! And a true thanks to everyone who donated! It’s appreciated more than I can express!

Hopefully, next year, we’ll figure some great things to raffle off as well!

I guess the April Fool's joke is on us, Mother Nat I guess the April Fool's joke is on us, Mother Nature? Oh .. ha ha ha.

I also guess this is why hitting back roads to work is good -- you can stop and take a photo and not worry about anybody coming (usually)! Main roads around here are fine for now, but it's definitely quite picturesque on the lawns/trees etc.

I mean, if you hold a #Wrestlemania in an open stadium... eventually rain delays had to come, right? 🤣
