Day Zero Project: Completed No. 95

May 23, 2012

It's not the greatest, but I understand it and plan to do more star trails!

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Learn how to do star trails and do at least one photo of them.

Date completed: August 11, 2011.

Number: 95 (remember, these goals will not all be done in order. It’s a random list where the numbers actually are).

Description: Star trails have always intrigued me. Patience, timing and the right setup seems to be key in doing these. It was a photographic technique I had never done and was interested.

Why I wanted to do it: I am always looking for ways to improve my photography. Whether it be through technical skills with the camera, or a technique such as star trails, I try to become a better photographer. I have seen some amazing star trail shots on Flickr and elsewhere and always wanted to do it, but never wanted to devote the time for it. It seemed like a good goal, knowing I had wanted to do this.

How I did it: I first worked on researching the technique. Anybody who knows me knows that I probably research things too much. There are different ways to do star trails. I opted for the one single long exposure. The plan will eventually be to try and do the stacking process, where I take many shorter exposures and combine them. The super-long exposure left things a bit grainy, obviously, which is OK, but I’d like to figure out all the ways of doing it! I took about four shots the night I went and did it. I used Fitch’s Covered Bridge as a backdrop. Even late at night, however, cars came through. I actually like that there is light movement in the photo as I think it add to it.

The above photo is a 20-minute exposure.

You can get quite bored in 20 minutes when it’s pitch-black out. Thankfully, a friend came along and we just chatted the time away. It’s the best way to do it, I think, because you can let the time fly and not even realize it if you are talking with people. I have some other places I’d like to try with this technique and if I do it, I’ll be sure to get one or two people to come along.

Since I took this shot — and the other that I somewhat liked that night — I know there are a lot of things I can work on to get better shots. Now to find the places and get all I need to do to do this!

About P.J.’s Day Zero Project: Day Zero is a project where people come up with 101 things to do over 1001 days. I started the project on Oct. 10, 2010 with an anticipated finish date of July 8, 2013. Goals will not be revealed until they are completed. A private list is at the Day Zero website and the list will be made public upon completion of the project. It’s my thoughts that if things are kept private, should I not do them, change or find a way around it, I’d only be cheating myself.

Day Zero Project: Completed No. 67

April 23, 2012

This shot was taken at Schenectady Central Park DGC -- a course that I have played more than any now. It was one of the 10 for this Day Zero Project goal.

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Play 10 disc golf courses I have never played.

Date completed: March 2012.

Number: 67  (remember, these goals will not all be done in order. It’s a random list where the numbers actually are).

Description: I wanted to play and explore 10 disc golf courses I had never played before. Being there aren’t many in my local area, this meant I would have to likely travel around and see new places.

Why I wanted to do it: When I first started the Day Zero Project, I was also new to the game of disc golf. That meant, it was a way for me to see new courses, play new courses and hopefully learn about the game more.

How I did it: I did it over time, that’s for sure! In my early playing days, I had only played “three” courses. I use quotes because two of them were full-time courses and one was a temp course. From there, I expanded a little. I hit up the course in Schenectady (which I have now played many times over) and then the one in Binghamton. I got the other in our “area” before expanding. A trip to the city to stay with a friend for a few days got me a few more courses in December 2010 and I thought I was on the way to doing this quickly.

Alas, it slowed down.

I added another in April 2011 for a tournament. Two of us went to the Ithaca area and ended up playing TC3 Panther Highlands. We had planned to try at least one 9-hole course there, but the first one took a while, so we moved along. I then finished off this goal with a weekend trip to Lancaster, Pa., in later March/early April this year. There, I played several mini courses and two regular courses. At some point, I also played one of the “local” courses at a state park — an object course — but hadn’t written it down. So I’ve done well enough to get my 10 new courses.

The courses I visited:

  • Schenectady Central Park, NY (11-11-10)
  • Conklin DGC, NY (11-25-10)
  • Hyzer Creek, NY (12-4-10)
  • Rutgers – Douglas, NJ (12-22-10)
  • Chimney Rock DGC, NJ (12-22-10)
  • Greenwood Meadows DGC, NJ (12-22-10)
  • FDR State Park, NY (4-2-11)
  • TC3 Panther Highlands, NY (6-25-11)
  • D.F. Buchmiller Park, PA (3-30-12)
  • Mini DGC at Mushroom Manor, PA (3-31-12)
I enjoyed playing these courses and I hope, by the end of the year, that I’ll have added 10 more new courses. I have several I’d like to see and play and hope I get the chance. I really love looking and playing new courses. I also have hopes that the local course that has been being worked on for a few years will come to fruition. It would be nice to have a solid course — if even just nine holes — to play on locally. And it would be nice to have a “true” home course.

Day Zero Project: Completed No. 56

March 7, 2012

This goal has helped me think outside the box in regard to images.

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Reach the 5,000-photo plateau on Flickr.

Date completed: February 2011.

Number: 56  (remember, these goals will not all be done in order. It’s a random list where the numbers actually are).

Description:  I wanted to have at least 5,000 photos posted on my Flickr account.

Why I wanted to do it: In all honesty, the reason was to more justify having a paid Flickr account. Why pay the $25 per year if you don’t utilize it? I wanted to make sure I used the account, posted photos, created sets and made it so people could see my images instead of just worrying about posting one photo per day on a photo blog. I also knew it would push me to take more photos as now I would be able to easily post many photos at one time.

More than 5,000 photos are in my Flickr stream, including several hundred from my trip to Ireland!

How I did it: I took photos.

Then I uploaded them!

Pretty simple, right?

The reality is I started carrying my camera more. I took more photos at events I went to. And I went to events I didn’t think I’d go to — just because I’m always looking for a cool photo opportunity. The other good part of this is the community. Flickr has SO many people on it and there are many, many talented photographers. By getting involved with the community, whether in groups or whatever else, you see a lot of inspiring photos. That made me want to go out and take more photos, see the world in a different way and work on getting photos uploaded.

So I kept taking photos and uploading them.

Before I knew it, it added up and I had reached my goal. Very cool stuff. I don’t see myself slowing down, either. Photography has become a release for me — a way to escape. And it’s easy to do by myself or with others.

Day Zero Project: Completed No. 13

November 21, 2011

A day at the beach... a wonderful way to clear the mind!

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Spend a day at the beach.

Date completed: October 2, 2011.

Number: 13  (remember, these goals will not all be done in order. It’s a random list where the numbers actually are).

Description: I never used to be a fan of the beach. That was until a friend got married in Florida. Then I found the beauty of beaches. For photos. For relaxing. For swimming. For whatever. I just like it better when nobody is around.

Why I wanted to do it: Different reasons, I guess. The biggest was that I knew it would help me clear my mind a bit. That’s been needed recently. And, to be honest, I just liked the idea of walking around the beach and having no worries.

How I did it: I took advantage of my aunt’s offer to stay down at her place on the Jersey Shore. The tourist season was done, so the beach was quite empty. It was decent weather when I was there, too, so that was nice. Cool enough to wear a sweatshirt, but warm enough to loaf in shorts. I actually spent a lot of the time at the shore on the beach, in different spots, ranging from Avalon to Cape May to Sea Isle City. But it was refreshing. I walked the beaches barefoot, I walked through the water coming up on the beach and I sat and stared out over the ocean. I took photos. I geocached. I relaxed. I realized what a treat the beach is. I don’t know how much I would like it with a lot of people around, but it did what I hoped for this trip — it relaxed me and allowed me to clear my mind some.

I took a lot of photos from the trip and you can see them in this Flickr set (note: as of Nov. 21, I still have one full day’s worth of photos I need to process and add to the set!)

50 questions that free your mind: No. 11

November 9, 2011

As part of my Day Zero Project, I will be answering the 50 Questions That Free Your Mind. For each of these, I will blog an answer and then it will be linked here as well. Some of these will have longer responses, some will be extremely short. But by the end of the Day Zero Project, I will have answered all of these.

No. 11: You’re having lunch with three people you respect and admire.  They all start criticizing a close friend of yours, not knowing she is your friend.  The criticism is distasteful and unjustified.  What do you do?

Talk about a moral situation, eh?

This question is interesting in that is could be looked at in several ways. Are these people co-workers? Random people you know and respect? People above you in the corporate world.

I realize that it should matter, but this is 2011. A lot of things matter these days. Maybe you are a new employee at lunch with these people. And the said person is a former employee. I’m not saying it’s right — not by any means — but a lot of things must be taken into account.

So…

In the perfect world, I would probably let them ramble. After all, at that point, you are gathering information. Remember — I’m a news person. So I don’t want to cut people off. Who knows what they’ll say. It’s worth listening to. And, honestly, it might not be your place to interrupt.

My first instinct would be to defend said friend, without — at first — noting that said person is a friend. I’d look at it in regard to showing them that I think they should stop. But… then again, it might be more fun to let them know said person is a friend.

The thing here is morality.

And in this day and age — I don’t care what anyone says — is there’s not a lot of it. People talk about people all the time. Everybody does it. And if someone says they don’t, they are either as pure as they come or they are full of it.

The key to this is distasteful and unjustified criticism. And in that case, I’d say something. Whether or not I’d identify myself as a close friend or just somebody who thinks its wrong — I’d say something.

And the odds are I’d go back to said close friend and let them know that these people obviously don’t think too highly of that person. That is the biggest moral point here, I think.

Now, if it’s normal trash talk and it might be, in some way, justified and not too bad? I probably note that I am a friend of the person so they stop and then file it away. I don’t think you always need to tell the person that people were talking about him or her. So I would just try and end it so I didn’t have to listen to it anymore.

And truthfully, it’s probably a case-by-case situation. I hate to say it, but that’s humanity. That’s how life is. I hope I’d rise above that and be able to say something, but until you are in this situation, do you really know how you’d react? I’m sure we all would like to think we know how’d we react, but who knows. It’s all based on the situation, where you are, who the people are and what it’s all about. It really is.

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
