Day Zero Project: Completed No. 35

September 10, 2015

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Visit Groundspeak  (Geocaching.com)

Date completed: August 17, 2015

Number: 35

Description: Groundspeak is the former name of Geocaching.com, and its headquarters are in Seattle. It’s a “mecca” of sorts for geocachers, who affectionately call it “HQ.” While there, one can get a hosted visit, which is bringing you inside the building and to an area that shows the history of the company and geocaching and is interactive with a couple of lackeys (the name for those who work there). Basically, it’s a bucket list spot for many geocachers.

At HQ!

At HQ!

Why I wanted to do it: I’ve geocached for several years, so having the chance to get there, see the headquarters and get to see some of the people who work there seemed like a cool thing. Plus, you get an icon for visiting, which makes it cooler.

How I did it: The company announced earlier this year that its popular Block Party event would be ending this year, after five years of holding it. It also coincided with the 15th year of geocaching, so it worked out well. With all of that in mind, I knew I’d like to go to the Block Party at some point, so now was the time. Three of us ventured out for this event and to cache in the area. I set us up for a hosted visit on that Monday (the event was Saturday) and we had the chance to spend a couple of hours there, learning the history and having the chance to meet other like-minded people. It was a fun event to be at and it was a cool “tour” of the place. Definitely worth doing if you are a geocacher.

About P.J.’s Day Zero Project: Day Zero is a project where people come up with 101 things to do over 1001 days. I started the project on August 1, 2014 with an anticipated finish date of April 28, 2017. Goals will not be revealed until they are completed. A private list is at the Day Zero website and the list will be made public upon completion of the project. It’s my thoughts that if things are kept private, should I not do them, change or find a way around it, I’d only be cheating myself.

Day Zero Project: Completed No. 91

July 15, 2015

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Don’t drink soda for a month

Date completed: February 28, 2015

Number: 91

Description: This is pretty simple – don’t drink soda for an entire month.

Why I wanted to do it: I don’t drink regular soda, rather diet. I do that for taste as well as health reasons. Still, I know it’s not good for me. So in my quest to try and get healthier, I thought this would be something good to do. I used to drink about one per day. Nothing Earth shattering, by any means, but enough to make me wonder. I also think it was a good way to make me drink more water.

How I did it: I just stopped. I know people who drink a lot of soda each day and might have issues with going cold turkey. For me, it wasn’t really a big deal. There were times I had wanted that carbonation, for sure, but I resisted. And I drank more water.

Some things that I found from it – my blood sugar went down for a while (it’s bounced around since, but I definitely saw a drop) so I felt better with things on the diabetes side. I also found that adding things to water – lemon, or those single-flavor pack things – made it easier, too. And a lot of those flavor packs have no sugar/carbs in them, which is even better.

I also felt a bit better, which was nice. That’s not to say it was all the soda, but it probably didn’t hurt. And since then? I’ve stayed away during March and the following months, for the most part. I’ve had a few, but usually just one of those 7.5-ounce cans. That way I get a small soda fix, but don’t get back to where I used to be.

Day Zero Project: Completed No. 100

July 8, 2015

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Design and create a t-shirt for HooHaa Brewing and submit on TeeSpring (and sell 10)

Date completed: January 25, 2015

Number: 100

Description: The goal was to design a logo and make a t-shirt via TeeSpring and set a goal of 10 for my home brew “company.” Obviously, I’m not a real brewery or anything, but I thought it would be a lot of fun to do.

hhbc_shirt

Why I wanted to do it: Why not? I love having my own shirt designs made. I’ve done it before on small runs of things (print on demand is a wonderful thing). And it’s always cool to see a design on a shirt. I had a few people, too, say I should get some shirts made with the “brewery” name on it, so I figured why not?

How I did it: I had worked on a mini design for custom bottle caps I had made, so I used the same idea for the t-shirt logo. I added a few things, if I remember right, to the shirt. I then just had to select the items (t-shirt/sweatshirt) and colors to put it out there. I set the goal at 10 to make it easier to be done and I shrunk the prices to make it easier for people to buy (I didn’t need profit … I just wanted to see campaign succeed). In the end, I sold 10 of the shirts/sweatshirts, which was quite cool. And now I have a t-shirt and sweatshirt with my “brewery” logo!

Day Zero Project: Completed No. 52

June 24, 2015

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Buy 101 microbadges on BGG in one day

Date completed: March 2, 2015

microbadges

Number: 52

Description: This is one of those silly … “why?” additions to the list. BGG is Boardgame Geek, one of the top – if not the top – board game website out there. It’s highly in-depth, depending on how deep you want to go with it. But there are microbadges for your profile and I got a tad addicted to them. You can make “Geek Gold” in different ways and spend it on things such as microbadges. A lot of them are very cool.

Why I wanted to do it: As a bit of a microbadge collector, I wanted the badge of getting 100 microbadges in one day. As for the 101? All in the name of the Day Zero Project!

How I did it: This wasn’t random, that’s for sure. I built up some Geek Gold and then ordered some via the marketplace to have enough. During that time, I went through pages and pages of microbadges, making a list of ones I wanted because, despite loving the badges, I didn’t just want random ones. So I build up ones I liked and would want. In the end, I bought the 101 in one day and got the special one as well.

Day Zero Project: Completed No. 12

June 17, 2015

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Create/produce a Stuck in the Middle Cachers shirt/sweatshirt and sell via TeeSpring

Date completed: March 10, 2015

Number: 12

Description: The Stuck in the Middle Cachers are a small group of geocachers in the Oneonta, New York area. For several years, we’ve talked about having t-shirts made. I’ve used TeeSpring for other things and thought that would be the way to go. Any profits would go toward the summer event we run.

stuck_shirt

Why I wanted to do it: Whenever I go to events elsewhere, groups have their own shirts and such. Although we’re a “group,” the reality is we’re pretty loose with it. Only two of the original four people are still active in the group, but we have a lot of others who take part and such. We have a cool logo, too, so I thought it would be neat to have that on a t-shirt. We did a coin several years ago, so it’s nice to have the shirt finally.

How I did it: TeeSpring is a pretty cool setup because you come up with a design, set a price, and then put it out there. To get the shirts to print, you need to make a certain amount (based on price and such). We set a goal of 25, but it would print with five purchases (just meaning much less profit as it gets more expensive to print with fewer shirts. I’m OK with that, though, as I didn’t expect to make money, rather a few bucks to get some essentials at the picnic). I set up a few different options (t-shit/sweatshirt) and a few color choices. In the end, we sold 10, which is cool. It sounds like some people who wanted in didn’t get in, so I am going to relaunch the campaign as well.

Dinner tonight was at @harpersburgers, especially with outdoor seating and dog friendly! @harper_dublin got to enjoy a little of my #burger, of course. And, yes, I got poutine, duh! Great service and great food! Went back later for a spiked shake. This one was a Malibu Colada (malibu rum, dark rum, vanilla ice cream, and pineapple juice) … yum!

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
