Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers. the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. 

For those in the United States, take a moment today to remember those who paid the ultimate price to make sure we have the freedoms we have. Also remember the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day, which celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

A day to remember

Take a moment to remember.

Though Memorial Day may have become a day for parades, barbeques and everything else, let’s remember what it’s all about — remembering those who have fought for our freedoms, especially those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Always remember.

And, like many (or most) holidays, it has become a bit more “Hallmark” in nature, when you look at sales and open businesses and everything else, the reality is this holiday — and federal day off — is to remember.

So take a moment out of your day to remember those who fought for our rights and freedoms. And remember those who died in battle, defending our country.

It’s what this day is about and we should never forget it.
