One Meeple: OctoDice – a light game to quench your thirst

August 9, 2016

It has been a few months since I’ve done any gaming, whether it’s solo or with a group. I’ve added a few games over that time, but I just haven’t had the time to sit down and learn some of them.

After a long road trip for baseball, I realized I needed to get a few games in. And something light that I could play in about 20 minutes and solo is what I was seeking.

Ready for a solo game of OctoDice.

Ready for a solo game of OctoDice.

Enter OctoDice, a game published by AEG.

From the rule book:

As scientists and engineers on board of the underwater research station “AquaSphere”, you are facing a big crisis: your most important tools, the bots, have stopped working!

It is time to take matters into your own hands–but quickly! After all, you want to have a major scientific breakthrough before the competition does. In the short time you have, you must expand your labs, analyze crystals, dock new submarines, reactivate the bots, and catch octopods.

Be careful though! You never know whether the competition is spying on you…

The game is quick and dice-based, so already a good thing. The mechanics are pretty simple, too. Roll the six dice, set any two aside. Roll the remaining four and, again, set two aside. Then roll the final two.

You then have to decide how to use the dice and score points based on the actions you choose.

The thing with games like this, though, is you are playing against yourself and trying to get your highest point total possible. This game has some options on a direction to take. You can aim for one part of things to score, or spread yourself out. I like that because it makes it so the game doesn’t always feel the same. Now, I am not sure I’d want to play this 100 times in a row, but I do like how it plays and it’s quick enough to satisfy the want to play a solo game.

I did end up playing the game three times on the night I played it – scoring 24, 34, and 29 points, respectively. Each time I took a different path and liked how things played out.

My highest scoring game, thus far.

My highest scoring game, thus far.

Those points should be a little higher, however. During the rounds, if you get so many octopods during a turn, you score points. I had it several times in the third (which is solo only) round, but there’s no actual spot for it – so I figured it was a wasted turn. Well, it turns out you do get those points as a thread on BoardGameGeek.com showed it.

Good to know for the future.

I like the theme of the game and the scoresheets that come with the game are really nice. There are plenty of them, too. Though I have a hard time believing I’ll use them all any time soon, I do hope there is a way to order another one down the line – just in case. It will make life a lot easier if I can get one if it’s needed, that’s for sure.

The dice aren’t the vest of quality, though. I don’t think I’ll use them enough to ruin them, but I could see if you were playing multi-player games where they might get worn out a little.

Overall, the game was fun. I would like to try it with two players and then maybe 3-4, but if I keep it as just a solo game, I won’t be disappointed. It’s a fun little filler game and one I can see me playing when I am looking for a quick game to play.

One Meeple: Looking at solo gaming

April 22, 2016

In my collection of board games, I have many that have solo variants.

It’s not that I don’t have a group to play with, rather when I’m not mixed in with that group, there’s not always people around to play board games with. That’s fine. But sometimes I also want to play a game, so the best way can often be solo.

And there are some really good solo games, too. Heck, even some great multi-player games (Le Havre, Nations etc.) have some great solo variants.

I can't win at Shephy.

I can’t win at Shephy.

So it’s time to start playing them a bit more.

But besides doing it and often taking photos of the games, I don’t blog much about it. There are times where it becomes almost a misadventure in playing games. Maybe I am totally looking at a rule wrong, or the “virtual” opponent is just whipping me.

And I’ve often wondered if it would be humorous to blog about. And now, I figure, what the hell?

So, welcome to “One Meeple.”

The first true post about this probably won’t be for a little bit. I’m actually reading rules for a few games so I can get some things under my belt a bit more before I start. But, I also needed a post for this day. And I had created a header logo already … so I needed to use it, right?

The reality is I don’t plan on winning too often when it comes to games. There are some solo games (Friday, for one) that I haven’t come close to winning. Shephy is another. And it drives me nuts as I keep trying to beat it.

But there are some fun games I need to really learn – like Hostage Negotiator. I have several with newer solo variants and I want to get playing them more. This will hopefully push me.

I might even do a couple of posts on here about some board games on the iPad that I play against computer opponents. I do tend to get whipped there, too!

In the somewhat near future, I’ll start this feature. Who knows how often I’ll run it, but I’d like to try to have one every 2-3 weeks or so. That’s why it would be nice to get a few under my belt, so I can get some writing done with them – and realize how bad at solo gaming I am.

This should be interesting. And hopefully fun!

Have a great weekend ahead… and play some games!

Photo Blogging Challenge (January 2015): Games

January 31, 2015

(Note: There is no Snapshot Saturday this week because it falls on the final day of the month, so the day for the Photo Blogging Challenge. Snapshot Saturday will return next week!)

I had a lot of fun with this month’s theme.

Originally, my plan had been to showcase a bigger project I am working on about board games, but though I love a lot of the photos I’ve taken for that, I think five board game images for this challenge wouldn’t be what I was hoping for.

So, I’ve gone in a mixed bag direction. Some were taken with a rented lens (a 100mm macro, which was awesome), and others with my own lenses.

I have some board game items and a few other things I think work within the theme. I’m also, thankfully, sticking to my guns to do this challenge mostly with my main camera in 2015, and trying to avoid the phone unless necessary or if a theme dictates.

I also look forward to seeing what people came up with for this theme!

Without further ado, here are my five for the month.

1. Roll the dice

As part of my board game project, this was an image I knew I wanted to capture. I love how this one came out. I probably could have done this post fully on dice images I took, but I wanted to be diverse!

Roll 'em!

Roll ’em!

2. Pieces

Many board games have items like this – small blocks, Meeples, or different pieces that are usually colorful. The newer board games have some amazing pieces to them.

Colorful pieces.

Colorful pieces.

3. New toy

I got this new toy for my nephew. It’s kind of a game because it shakes and the mini pieces inside go back and forth. He seemed to enjoy the rattle part, as well as the mirror. I loved how this image came out, despite being a little soft.

Small hands.

Small hands.

4. Geocaching

This is one my favorite game/hobbies. I don’t believe it to be a sport as many people call it, rather it’s a game and one I truly enjoy. This is actually a cache I have hidden that I took some snaps of when I had a rented lens.

Finding the cache.

Finding the cache.

5. Pop ‘em out

One thing about many board games is all of the items you have to pop out. This is one I got for Christmas, Le Havre, before I started punching out everything.

Punch out time!

Punch out time!

That’s my five and now it’s your turn!

If you took part in this month’s challenge, make sure to link up below. And for those of you who participated, make sure you try and get to other people’s blogs and comment (here, too!). Let’s continue to grow this challenge and have a strong community. Come back and check out the others who link later on, too!

Also, don’t forget to get back here tomorrow, February 1, to see the theme for February! Remember, in March, we celebrate our second anniversary! Is there anybody (besides me) who hasn’t missed a month?

NOTE: I set up a Facebook group for those who participate in the challenge and are interested. I’ll post any announcements there and hopefully it can be a place where things are discussed and some interaction etc. You can access it here.

A “dorky” night of gaming is a great way to spend a Saturday

October 22, 2013

A month or so ago, I was chatting with a fellow softball player about an upcoming wrestling event.

Both being fans, I asked him if he was interested in going.

He said he was, but had to check things out because he did something pretty much every Saturday night. With that he noted, “it may sound dorky, but we play board games.”

That doesn’t sound dorky to me, I said. And after more prodding, I found out more about some of the games etc. It actually sounded pretty cool.

Already knowing the others (more softball players), I got an invite to go this past weekend and I wasn’t disappointed. Talk about a cheap and entertaining way to spend a Saturday night — as well as play a bunch of different games.

Hosted by George (who, interestingly enough, is a player on our biggest rivals in the local softball league), there were five of us in total for this night.

Now, when I say board games, don’t think the normal standby classics like Monopoly, Life etc. Though I personally like those games, these are newer and more interesting ones. These take some in-depth thinking, or backstabbing actions.

In short, this isn’t Parker Brothers.

I’ve always been a fan of nights like this. But, I’ve never been much of a card guy. And that usually scratches off a Saturday night as most people I know don’t want to get together and play board games. So I feel fortunate I had the chance to play with this group and look forward to more in future weeks.

Turns out George is quite the gamer with something like 150 games, some of which he’s gotten through Kickstarter campaigns and such. It’s safe to say that I hadn’t heard of any of the ones we played and probably only a handful of the others we didn’t.

All told, we played four games that night.

Wallenstein

The first, Wallenstein, had a Risk “feel” to it in that you controlled certain areas. But it wasn’t the full goal as you needed to have buildings, properties and be able to feed these places, too. It was pretty in-depth.

There were battles, too, but sometimes it’s not the smartest thing to do.

What I liked about this game is the thinking aspect. After a round or so, you could see things unfold a bit more and realize you needed to strategize. For example, you didn’t want to tax or get grain from the same spot twice during a round or they would revolt and fight.

That’s not a good thing.

So you had to think about where you were, who was around you, what could happen and a whole slew of other things.

The game took a few hours to play, but it wasn’t a boring few hours. In fact, when we were done and one of the others noted the time, I couldn’t believe we had been playing that long. But that’s OK. When it’s fun and continually moves, it’s all good.

The second game was my favorite of the night — Nothing Personal. It’s a mafia-based game where your goal is to “control” as many gangsters as you can, and also have the Capo ring. You use influence points and strategy to get as many points as you can.

Cards from “Nothing Personal.”

But the best part? Deception.

Using game cards and other things, you can actually get others to pay you to do things or place influence points etc.

And if you decide, after getting their money, that you don’t want to help them? You screw them over.

That’s a whole heap of fun.

For the most part, there was honesty in this game on this night. Though there were battles (I was basically targeting one person and, in turn, he was doing the same!), the game progressed pretty well.

This game can make you think a bit because if you are a little too deceptive, you can totally get people to gang up on you.

And that’s not something you usually want to have happen in any game.

I do like that there was strategy involved and you had to think about where and when to play your cards. But being able to auction things off or give them to somebody to hurt somebody else, it’s even better. A very cool game that didn’t take too long to play.

After that, we went on to Speculation, a fast-paced stock market game.

Stocks and a card from “Speculation.”

Basically, you watch as stocks go up fast or slow and try and buy high/sell low. The amount of stock is based on where it is among the eight on the board and what part of the board they are on. There are times where you can get a stock and actually get paid to take it. Boom!

What’s nice about this one is it’s actually a bit relaxing. Because it moves fast, you basically just have to try and think about what kind of money you have to spend or what you want to sell.

Like the regular stock market, it’s chance and luck.

One player draws how many spaces a stock will move and then each player flips a card over to show what stock they choose to use. There’s also one card per player that can stop the stocks from moving.

It’s a fast-moving game, which is nice as it can be a bridge from one game to the next. And though there’s some thought and strategy, it’s not too deep, so you can rest your melon a bit before jumping back into a bigger game.

We finished the night with a game called Lord of Waterdeep.

Lord of Waterdeep.

This game was pretty interesting. You have cards that allow you to do things and you have to finish quests. That makes things interesting when it’s your turn as you have to make sure you get everything you need. When you complete the quests, you earn points and sometimes gold or other things.

It’s very interesting.

This one required thinking, strategy and paying attention. I like games like that as it makes you consider each of your moves and what ramifications can come from said move.

The best part?

When the game ended, I held on for a stunning victory. It was nice to be able to walk away by winning a game on my first night there. Though, to be fair, winning wasn’t the most important part. It was playing and having a good time.

I’ll look forward to future game nights as it’s definitely a fun way to spend a night and it doesn’t cost anything, either, which is even better!

Geocaching: Checking the logs

May 18, 2011

RIP, LPC Rest Area

I recently archived the above cache.

One, because it seemed like it had run its course. Two, because I am slowly becoming more wary and bored with LPCs (lamp post caches), so I decided to join the the people who don’t have those caches hidden. This one was a bit different, however, as it wasn’t the normal film canister under the lamp post — it was a small lock and lock. I enjoyed this cache and I loved the write up the most.

This was my (partial) write-up for the cache (I didn’t put the whole thing in there as some parts no longer would have worked, so I wanted to put the part I enjoyed the best on the blog!):

Could it be? In our fine little town? You bet!
I was going to eventually do one of these. I know the feeling of some cachers are that these types are ruining the game. All these micros! All these LPCs! Can it be? Really? Is our game going to die and go away because of these?Nay, I say!

I’ve enjoyed these. Are they simple? Sure. Do they help people get their numbers up quick? You betcha. Is there a reason why anyone should care?

Nay, I say!

Alas, I understand the complaining. You go to these well-constructed posts and all you find are 35mm canisters. Or something else that small.

It’s time to change the norm here a little bit.

This isn’t your normal LPC. This, instead, is a rest area. You have small TBs and coins that need to move? Bring ’em here. Feel like picking some up? Maybe there are some here!

No rules. You don’t have to trade bugs. If there is one in there, take it and move it. If it is empty and you have one, put it in. If you want to swap out, I highly encourage it. No requirement though, this isn’t a prison or a motel, it’s a rest area.

Lifting some skirts can get you in trouble these days. Not in this spot! Do it here and you’ll find a small lock-and-lock container with a logbook, some pencils and hopefully a few TBs.

I’ve left a nifty FTF pin for the finder of this one. I also left two of my signature items — a button and a wood coin — in there for those who collect those items.

To find this cache won’t take a rocket science degree, just a pretty good sense of stealth. I placed at night, so it was easier for me. This area can be highly active during normal hours, so be smart and please replace as well or better than found.

I had fun with that description and enjoyed the cache while it was active.

Alas, in this area, once a cache runs its course, it can, at times, just sit there and collect dust. Though this one got hit a few times a year, I thought it was time to move along with it (it hadn’t had a find in about seven months).

So when everything was picked up, I looked at the log. Many of my other caches that I replaced or archived is because something happened to the container. This time, however, the log was still there and all set.

Yay!

Here’s a screen shot of the start of the logs — so you can see how many people have logged it online.

38 logged finds

There have been 38 logged finds on this cache.

But, that’s online.

So, how many match up? Are there any logged online and not in the log book? How many the other way around?

The book has 44 signatures.

There are seven people who have signed the log who are not logged online.

  • Two of them are people connected to this area a bit and do log, so I wonder if they forgot.
  • One is Darren, and he never logs.
  • One travels with another person and I don’t think logs often.
  • I don’t know who the other three are (though one appears to be someone who happened to find this and just signed their name)

There is one person logged online who isn’t in the book, though I know the person and know how him and his caching partner sign, so he’s kind of in the book. The other strange one was a name not in the book, but the date. I somewhat know who this person is and think they had changed their online name, so that makes sense.

Basically, everything adds up.

That’s pretty cool, considering there has been forum talk and such about how people go and virtual log things etc. It’s never shocking to see how many sign the logs and don’t log online as I know many people just enjoy geocaching and don’t care too much about the numbers online or logging. However, the logging online is an important thing to the game as it lets owners know the caches are being found and/or if there are any problems with the cache.

There are a couple of other caches I’ll be looking to possibly archive soon. I’ll look forward to matching those logs, too, to see if everything is on the up and up. I don’t plan on doing anything if it’s not, but it’s always good to know.

So what about all of you out there? Do you ever match up logs? Find things that don’t match? How do you react and what do you do in those situations? Leave a comment and let me know!

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
