Relay for Life coming fast!

Consider this a last-second plea.

Well, it’s not really last second per say, but close enough.

Our local Relay for Life is being held April 30. The event has been going for more than 10 years and is a very successful event. A few years ago, they even reached the $1 million raised mark. Pretty cool, right?

I’m no longer an active participant in the local Relay (though I do try and get up there and walk a little bit and see what they are doing), but I support it as much as I can. My mother, however, is still active in it and this year, she’s raising money again as well as being part of the organizing committee. Even more interesting, though, is that she is her own team, thus meaning she’s raising money all on her own.

I’m hoping some blogging friends and readers will see it in their hearts to donate to this team. I know I’ve donated to several people’s causes when I come across them because I believe in doing good and hope that my dollars will help as much as possible. So, if you read this and you can donate – I’d appreciate whatever you can give.

Anyway, her goal was $500 (which, for the record, she’s already made). However, it would be awesome to see her reach $1,000. She’s made that level the past few years, so hopefully she can do it again. The website show’s she’s at $850 right now, so I think it’s definitely doable. I’d love to see her get even higher.

Relay for Life: A plea to give if you can!

Hi folks.

I know a week or two ago, I posted about this. I’m hoping if I do it again (and maybe one other time before the event), I can encourage a few people to donate.

My mother is in the local Relay for Life. She usually does well fundraising, so hopefully that trend will continue this year. I am hoping some of my blogger readers/friends will consider giving a little as well. It doesn’t have to be a ton (though that is always nice, too!), but every little bit helps. I try and do the same when I see other bloggers doing some cool things for charity, so I figured this would be a good place to go.

The event is in late April and her goal is a modest $500. Hopefully she can easily reach that (she’s at $50 now, and I always give $100, so hopefully more will come in!) and maybe go past it.

With help, hopefully she’ll do as she did last year, which I believe was more than $1,000.

She’s also not on a team per say, as she’s doing this on her own.

It’s that time of year again, folks.

Relay for Life.

I’ve done this post several times before. But it’s something I still believe in and hope you can help.

Though not an active participant, I still try and help my mother raise money. Last year, if I remember correctly, she raised more than $1,000.

With everybody’s help, maybe she can do it again.

NYFD fundraising in a cool way

The New York City Fire Department is excelling in fundraising 101.

I had to go to the City this past weekend for a work conference. After the seminar on Sunday, I met with some friends for dinner and to walk around a bit.

At one point, we were passing one of the City’s many fire department spots and I was told of a fundraiser they are doing — selling t-shirts.

Yeah, it seems simple enough, but this is pretty cool.

So what you do is ring the bell and ask about the t-shirts. You are brought into the department and can buy a shirt. How cool is that? You’re there with the fire trucks and a fireman and helping support. That is fundraising 101 at its finest.

Think about it — you are visiting New York City, which is home to arguably the most famous fire department out there. You get to go visit the fire house and walk away with a shirt — for 20 bucks. And, at the same time, you are helping and supporting said fire department.

That’s pretty cool.

Here’s the even cooler part — every fire battalion apparently has its own design, which is really cool.

Now, I have no idea how long this has been going on for. This doesn’t seem too new, but for somebody who doesn’t visit the City often, it was new to me. So I, of course, had to get one.

To me, this is basic fundraising at its best and I give much kudos to the NYFD for it. Next time I’m there, I may have to add a second shirt. I just wish, when we were inside, I would have seen if I could have snapped a photo or two.

This was definitely pretty cool and well worth experiencing, and I also know the money goes to a good cause.

Thank you to all who donated

The Relay was again successful!

This post goes out to all of you who donated to my page for the Relay For Life.

Despite frigid (and below freezing) temperatures this past Friday/Saturday, we endured and stayed as long as we could. Our area Relay runs from 6 p.m. Friday until 8 or 9 a.m. on Saturday.

I made it until about 3:30 a.m. before I had to go home, take a quick nap and warm up. I returned at about 5:45 a.m. to help Darren tear down our tent and clean up everything. We chatted with a few others as the sun started to warm things up a bit. I finally got back to bed around 8 a.m. and slept into the early afternoon.

The Relay can really wipe you out for a weekend with the all-night event and then having to catch up on sleep and such.

Alas, it’s for a good cause. And well worth doing.

Each year, I set my goal for $500. And with such a small team, our goal is usually $1,000. We reached both this year.

For those of you who donated, again, thank you. My personal goal was well met with a late push Thursday night and I ended with $610 raised. The team did well, too, as we raised $1,950. I’m not sure if that includes everything we gave that night, though, so I’m hoping we’ll be over the $2,000 mark once they add everything up.

In the end, that’s what it’s all about.

The event is to Celebrate. Remember. Fight back.

And, to raise money to try and find a way to beat the hell out of cancer.

I hear so often people say that they relay because they can. I do as well. But I also do it as a way to give back and, hopefully, be able to see a cure for this disease in my lifetime. Will that happen? Who knows. But I can continue to hope.

And try and raise money.

So thank you again. Many times over.

As for the raffle… oh yeah! I didn’t forget! I’ll be going through, adding up number of entries and running it through the Random.org randomizer in the next week or so and then will announce the winner via e-mail and on the blog. I have the scarf ready to send out, so I will be announcing that soon!
