Flickr… where have you gone?

December 26, 2014

There was a stretch of time where I was really into Flickr.

I mean really into it.

I’m not sure where that ceased, but it likely has something to do with Instagram and such.

Time to get back into it.

Time to get back into it.

Still, I miss Flickr. Quite a bit, actually. It’s a really good community of photographers and a great place to get inspiration for photos/projects etc. It’s also a good place to just see what other people do, get tips and such. And I miss it.

A few years ago, I’d upload many things to Flickr. I’d have albums and all sorts of things. It was fun. The community was cool. It was fun to comment on other people’s photos and, sometimes, get comments on yours.

Somewhere, though, it got tedious. I’m not exactly sure where that happened, but it did. So I kind of stopped using Flickr, outside of uploading things I needed for blogs and such.

In 2014, I kind of got away from “real” photography. I call it real because by it I mean using my real camera, not relying on iPhone and such. Even with the monthly photo blogging challenge, a lot was done via the iPhone.

That is all hopefully going to change now.

My Canon 7D has been acting up recently and I had to start deciding if I was going to continue to try and get it repaired, or upgrade. I’ve had it for nearly five years and I’ve had to have take easily more than 100,000 photos with it. That means, eventually, the shutter would probably go on it, too. But it’s been dropped and such… the focus is off, it doesn’t read a battery even when fully charged and… well, you get the picture.

That meant decision time. After hemming and hawing for a bit, I finally decided to dive in and upgrade and I got myself the Canon 7D Mark II. My initial thoughts on this camera are that it’s amazing. But that’s not, for now, the point of this post.

My main decision is that I need to challenge myself photographically again. I want to be able to take photos and enjoy doing it. I want to share my images. I want to understand this new camera and learn all of its functions and capabilities. Basically, I want to really dive into photography again.

And, with that, I think I need to get back into Flickr. There are so many amazing photographers out there and a lot of them are on Flickr. It’s fun to see what people do and sometimes find out how they do it.

That also brings me to the one reason I wanted to do this post — it seems I’m not the only one who got away from Flickr. When I started up with it years ago, I found many really good people who took photos and shared. It’s cool to see or try and see what people were thinking when they took a photo. Be it an angle, a setup or something else.

As I looked through those I follow, so many of them haven’t uploaded anything in more than a few years. That’s too bad, too, as it would be nice to see how they are all doing. Some of those I truly used to enjoy aren’t even part of Flickr anymore.

That just means I need to look up some new people to see what’s out there. I’m looking forward to photography again … without it just being the iPhone.

Foto Friday: The Archives III

August 10, 2012

With a lack of ideas right now for Foto Friday, I thought it would be a good time to do another Archive post.

For those new to the blog, the Archives is where I go through my Flickr and click on random pages for random photos. I then post them here.

I think the reason I enjoy this feature is it makes me look at some of my old photos. That works for me two ways — it let’s me look back to see what I’ve done and it also makes me see different things I can work on to improve. Sometimes, it will also give me some inspiration moving forward.

So, without further delay… here’s the Archives III, all from my Flickr stream.

Foto Friday: Organizing your photographs

April 20, 2012

First of all, I realize that this week’s Foto Friday is filled with words and not images, but that’s designed. For this week, anyway.

It’s because I am coming to photographers (or anyone else) and asking a serious question.

How the heck do you organize your photos?

I currently have three external hard drives (150 gig, 500 gig, 1 TB). My goal — and plan — is to get these photos all organized onto one external hard drive (perhaps a 2TB hard drive?) and keep them all there, as well as get an online backup service to make sure things are safer.

I have so many other things on these hard drives and I hate knowing it takes up so much needed space. That space where I could put photos!

From documents to everything else, I have it on these hard drives.

Here’s my issue — when I shoot, I shoot in Raw and JPEG. The reason being, if something is decent enough on the fly, I can use the JPEG. If not, use the RAW. However, I’m noticing (obviously) that the two files take up a lot more space than if I just shot one. So I’m thinking about keeping it the same, but shooting RAW plus a really small JPEG file. That way, I can use it for a thumbnail to know what I have (when on the computer), yet not take up as much space.

That’s for another day, though.

Here’s my first thought on how to do this whole thing.

I have a lot of space available on my computer’s hard drive. I think I’m slowly going to start moving things around a bit. Maybe I’ll start with the 250 gig hard drive and get everything not photos off and on the computer. Then do the same for the 500 gig HD and then the 1 TB. Once I have only photos on each of these drives, I can see how much space it actually takes up.

In the end, the 1 TB external HD might be good enough. It also might not be, in which case I will have to start looking at getting a 2TB one and making sure it’s only for photos.

I also want to go through everything and find every video I have ever taken and put that on its own external HD. Reality is videos take up a lot of space on one’s hard drive, so to have them separate might be a smart move. Plus, I can then go through them, edit as needed and upload them to places such as YouTube or Flickr.

The same can be said with my photos. As I go through them, my goal is to hopefully start uploading many other things to my Flickr account. In the end, I hope to have Flickr be my personal history in photographs. Utilizing the sets and collections, I’ll be able to have things in one place. That way, if somebody wants to see, say, my Ireland photos, they can click on that collection and see all the sets that make up that collection.

And in the end, those photos will always be there, which is a cool thing.

In the end, my hope is to have everything in a couple of spots, so it’s much easier to access and see. And, truthfully, if anything ever happens to me, I’d like it so these items are easy for people to get or see. I’m quite proud of a lot of the images I have taken and I’d like to make sure these things are taken care of no matter what.

I was sifting through a couple of these older shots this morning for a future Foto Friday post and realized I have some things I really was happy with when I first took them. But that was before my world of Flickr. Though, at that time, I was keeping my Photo blog up to date. (I haven’t recently, unfortunately. Maybe if I get organizing, I can try and get that photo blog on auto pilot and have it automatically update photos for several years!) There are some cool shots that I’d like to start uploading to Flickr and, as I noted, organizing these images.

So that’s my next photo project, of sorts.

I’m sure it won’t be done too quickly. I have a lot of images to get through, check out and see where things belong. But in the end, I think I’ll be quite stoked at the outcome and I will know that things are securely backed up and in a good spot. I hope, anyway.

For future Foto Fridays: If any of you shutterbugs out there have any ideas for topics or themes or anything else I can use for Foto Friday, let me know. I’m willing to try many things, especially for a good blog post! Hopefully I can come up with a list of items I can start working on to try and get some ideas in the bank and have many other Foto Friday stories!

Foto Friday: The Archives II

April 13, 2012

It’s that time again.

I’ve been sifting through my Flickr account as I try and update things and keep up to date on uploading my Project 366!

While I was at it, I was thinking it might be fun to do an archive Foto Friday, as I did back in February.

The idea is simple — I choose a few random Flickr pages and select a photo from it. I hope you enjoy this trip through some archives!

I hope you enjoyed this trip down photo lane with me. I’ll likely do it again sometime in the future after I pile up some more pages worth of photos on Flickr!

Day Zero Project: Completed No. 56

March 7, 2012

This goal has helped me think outside the box in regard to images.

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Reach the 5,000-photo plateau on Flickr.

Date completed: February 2011.

Number: 56  (remember, these goals will not all be done in order. It’s a random list where the numbers actually are).

Description:  I wanted to have at least 5,000 photos posted on my Flickr account.

Why I wanted to do it: In all honesty, the reason was to more justify having a paid Flickr account. Why pay the $25 per year if you don’t utilize it? I wanted to make sure I used the account, posted photos, created sets and made it so people could see my images instead of just worrying about posting one photo per day on a photo blog. I also knew it would push me to take more photos as now I would be able to easily post many photos at one time.

More than 5,000 photos are in my Flickr stream, including several hundred from my trip to Ireland!

How I did it: I took photos.

Then I uploaded them!

Pretty simple, right?

The reality is I started carrying my camera more. I took more photos at events I went to. And I went to events I didn’t think I’d go to — just because I’m always looking for a cool photo opportunity. The other good part of this is the community. Flickr has SO many people on it and there are many, many talented photographers. By getting involved with the community, whether in groups or whatever else, you see a lot of inspiring photos. That made me want to go out and take more photos, see the world in a different way and work on getting photos uploaded.

So I kept taking photos and uploading them.

Before I knew it, it added up and I had reached my goal. Very cool stuff. I don’t see myself slowing down, either. Photography has become a release for me — a way to escape. And it’s easy to do by myself or with others.

About P.J.’s Day Zero Project: Day Zero is a project where people come up with 101 things to do over 1001 days. I started the project on Oct. 10, 2010 with an anticipated finish date of July 8, 2013. Goals will not be revealed until they are completed. A private list is at the Day Zero website  and the list will be made public upon completion of the project. It’s my thoughts that if things are kept private, should I not do them, change or find a way around it, I’d only be cheating myself.

Fundraiser: I am, again, trying to raise money for the Relay For Life. If you donate to me — even a small amount — you will be entered to win a super-sweet quilted scarf. Click here for all the information!

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
