Day trip forgetfulness

May 6, 2011

If anyone has ever traveled with me, you know some of the stuff I am going to post.

I second-guess a lot of the items I do when doing a day trip, especially if I am not driving the full way to somewhere.

Tomorrow (Saturday), I am driving to a somewhat nearby Amtrak train station, and then taking the train into New York City to meet up with a few former co-workers. (It’s like a castoff reunion!)

Part of my issue is always thinking I forgot something and I worry about forgetting things too much. Even silly stuff.

Such as locking my car.

I can lock my car three or four times and then still second-guess myself as to whether or not I locked said vehicle.

<sigh>

So being a day trip tomorrow, I don’t have to remember a lot of things.

Besides my camera. Memory cards. My GPS (hey, you never know, I might grab a cache or two…). My phone. My Kindle (of course… for the train ride) and my phone charger.

That’s it.

It will all fit into my camera back pack, so I should be good to go.

Anyway, the trip should be a fun one. I am looking forward to catching up with some people and the weather (crossing fingers that it stays this way…) looks pretty decent.

And once I settle into the seat on the train, that’s it. So I have to make sure I don’t forget anything in the car and all or else I’m not going to have it.

That being said, I’ve also not been on an Amtrak train. The only trains I’ve taken are subways and one time taking the Metro North into New York City (though that goes slow as it makes a lot of stops).

Hopefully this Amtrak train won’t be too packed as I’d like to be able to relax on the train a little on the ride down. Maybe snooze a little, listen to some tunes and read a book on the Kindle.

Hopefully, I’ll have some good photos, too. We’ll see how it all goes.

A little on the disc golf world. Darren was in the area briefly today, so I went and threw for a little while with him. We also discussed some ideas we had for a nine-hole disc golf course we are working on hopefully doing. I’m nearly done with the proposal I need to give to the people in charge. I know several big people were interested when I told them about it, so hopefully we can pull it off. We need to work on some pricing so we can work on sponsorships and finding a way to fund the course.

We’ll see how it goes. I’d like to have things going by the end of June if possible as that would really work with the area’s summer programs and such.

The course being worked on for Oneonta is moving along, too. We have a bunch of sponsors and are working on getting some checks so we can at least start thinking about getting nine of the 18 holes in the ground. Hopefully soon.

If both of these projects get going, it will be nice to have some disc golf options locally.

Just some randomness today as I get things in order for my day trip in the morning. I’ll get back on track soon!

Feel free to leave a comment, or e-mail P.J. at hoohaablog [at] gmail.com.

A nice day to be out

March 20, 2011

It started off a cold day, but the sun was out and the blues skies were too inviting not to get outside and do something. Even if it was just a little walking.

I headed over the Smith Pond, which is a hidden little gem in our village. It’s a great spot with some decent hiking trails, a decent-sized pond and just a nice place to get out and breathe some fresh air. My plan was two-fold: to seek out a possible place for a future geocache and to take a couple of photos and try some things out.

It ended up being three-fold, but I’ll get to that in a little bit.

First, the geocache.

There are a few caches already in Smith Pond. They are all by people who are no longer in the area. One is very old, however, and it’s an ammo can. It might be one of the oldest ones in our town and a few people keep a watch on it as it’s a really nice ones. The others are newer.

Where I’d really like to put this cache is smack in between two caches and it doesn’t appear that I can get far enough from each of them to be able to pull it off. I’m trying to find out about the future of a couple of them as if they are being planned to eventually be archived, then I can start planning. If not, I need to start planning again.

The spot is perfect for it, though. So hopefully it will work out.

Then there was the photography.

I purchased a panoramic thing from Photojojo and wanted to try it out today. I did that, alas it didn’t come out how I wanted. I’ll play with the images I took a bit more tonight and see if I can get it to stitch a little differently, but it’s not a bad first effort. I think I might have been using it wrong, so we’ll see. I’ll try it again soon on something.

I did take some other shots with my Diana lens and my pinhole lens. I’ll be working on those likely tonight, so we’ll see how they come out. The shots that I like will make it up on Flickr.

This is one with my cell phone camera:

Smith Pond in Delhi

And for the final thing. As I walked around Smith Pond park, I realized that this would be a good spot for a nine-hole disc golf course. The park is used some by walkers and people fishing, but it could be used for so much more. I’m not talking a world-championship caliber course, but a nice, family friendly course. One where people could come with a couple of discs and throw and have fun.

There wouldn’t need to be top-line baskets, just good ones. The holes probably wouldn’t be that long, but there would be some good woods holes etc. And if we ran it across the bottom portion of the park, there would be a chance to lose discs if not careful as the river runs next to the trail.

I’d have to do research and get someone who knows about course design to walk around the park, but it seems like something that might be worth looking into and talking to the village about. It would be pretty sweet to have a place close to play and with the park’s closeness to the local high school and college, the two of those places could probably utilize the course, too.

Just some thoughts, of course. We’ll see what happens.

More later!

I wrote this about Sam Nader during a public celebration of his 100th birthday. I'm sure I'll have something more in the next day or so as well, but this covers a lot about my thoughts of this amazing man. RIP, Sam. You'll be missed.
