Messing with the blogging world since 2005

Notes from my Noodle: Sept. 20 edition

September 20, 2011

It’s been a while since I went out for a first-to-find run.

So when three new ones popped up in the area — all within 7 or 8 miles — in the early evening, I was tempted. Still, going out on a FTF run by myself isn’t always the most fun thing in the world. So, I put it aside and figured maybe I’d hit them later in the week.

Then I got a message from Craig of Team-Ducky, who noted that he might be willing to head over and join me for the hunts. A self-professed FTF hound, it didn’t shock me that he was willing to travel the 20-25 minutes over as he’s gone distances a lot longer.

It was a nice evening, so I figured what the heck.

Thirty-five minutes later or so, we were off and searching.

The first one didn’t take too long. It was a micro and a park-and-grab. A good hide. Same with the second one. The third one was a little tougher, especially with the mosquitoes humming away. Soon, the smaller lock-n-lock container was in hand and we signed away.

I haven’t done a lot of caching recently. Heck, outside of July, I haven’t done a lot of caching at all. There are a bunch of local caches I haven’t found yet, so it’s probably time to try and grab them and scratch them off the list.

It only took about an hour total to get them, so it was a nice getaway for a little while.

***

Processing photos is a long, well, process.

I shot a wedding a couple weeks ago and I am about halfway through the images. I usually just give the couple a CD with all the processed images, so it’s easy in that regard that I don’t have to do proofs and prints. Still, it’s a long, drawn-out process as you want to make the photos look as good as you can for the couple.

It’s probably why I don’t do weddings often.

Still, I love looking through these images. I’m really happy with the photos I got and I hope the couple is as well. There’s some really cool moments captured.

***

It would appear that I didn’t get the gig I had hoped I would have a shot at. A recent interview, which I thought went so-so, didn’t end up going anywhere. I figured because I hadn’t heard back at all in a while that I wasn’t moving on in the process.

I’ve received word that the position has been filled, but I haven’t heard officially. Hopefully I’ll get some word to make it official as I always hold out hope that I have a chance until I get that official note.

***

I’ve been peeking at my baseball cards recently. Part of the reason is I plan on giving some of those that I have doubles of (autographs, game-used) away in upcoming contests.

I was also looking to see about landing some reprints of any cards for players I am writing about for the HooHaa 9.

That also gave me a chance to check out some of the players I collect and made me realize that I am still missing a handful of cards for each person. Of course, at this moment, I won’t be purchasing cards. But it’s nice to know I can work on getting the list so once I’m gainfully employed again, I can hit up a show, eBay or Beckett and try and get the final cards.

***

Speaking of contests, the next one will be announced this Sunday. Make sure you check it out and enter!

Front of the shirt.

Our softball team party is this weekend.

Back of shirt

Being we won our second straight championship this year, we opted to get championship shirts. They are supposed to be in by Friday, which is good. I can then collect the money from the guys and send the payment. But it will be nice to get everyone the shirt. It’s kind of like our “ring ceremony.”

The front of the shirt won’t be fully covered by the above graphic. Instead, it will be a little smaller, centered in the middle of the chest.

The back of the shirt will have the info. I went through different things with this. Originally, I had the back-to-back part up top. I also had records, which looked out of place (for the record, we were 16-2 in 2010 and 19-2 in 2011).

The roster is the 2011 roster. I probably could have (and maybe should have) added the few people who played for the 2010 team and didn’t play this year (especially being it’s not like they played elsewhere. Two moved away and two just didn’t play). Alas, that would have made for some confusing spacing. I could have probably done something, but it’s too late now as it’s printing. I didn’t actually think about that until writing this post, however.

That being said, there were some changes this year with a second sponsor and everything else. So it’s all good how it came out. I’m happy with the shirts. If we three-peat next year, I’ll make sure everyone from the past three years are on the shirts. Nothing will be guaranteed, however, as we had some stiff competition in the finals and expect we’ll be seeing that team next year along the lines, too. Also, there were some good, young teams, so hopefully the league will keep getting stronger and stronger.

Either way, I’ll look forward to having these shirts at the team party this weekend in our final celebration of 2011.

Remember 9/11 – a contest

September 11, 2011

I opted to make my first contest start on September 11.

It’s been 10 years since the fateful day when terrorists took over planes and crashed into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and in a field in western Pennsylvania. It’s been 10 years since a nation was shaken by this happening on our soil, our land.

It’s been 10 years…

Those images will never leave my head. Of the people running from downtown. Of the firefighters trying to save lives. Of the scene during and after the attacks. Of the emotion and reaction of America.

Ten years…

In that time, it can be argued whether or not we are in a safer world. Or a better world. But there is no more Saddam Hussein. No more Osama bin Laden. The United States got ’em both.

Still, our economy is in the crapper. Things aren’t the brightest. But on this day, we need to forget our troubles. Remember those who died on that awful day. Remember the big picture and what this country stands for.

Do you remember 9/11/01?

Where were you? What were you doing? What went through your mind?

I remember vividly where I was. I was at college. My senior year at Lock Haven. I came out of the bedroom just after the first plane went into the first tower. My roommate was at his computer and said I needed to see this — a plane just went into the Twin Towers.

I thought he was kidding. I soon found out he wasn’t.

I sat down with a glass of water just in time to see the second plane go into the second tower. Then the reports of the Pentagon. And of the plane in western Pennsylvania. It was surreal. I watched for a while longer before getting ready for class.

The campus was quiet, somber. People were crying. Classes were cut short. The sad part is some people took advantage of this by saying they couldn’t be in class. Teachers gave them the OK to leave and then they were seen shortly after out sunbathing and laughing like nothing happened.

Some classes had discussions on what happened. Some watched movies. I had two classes that day and nothing was too different.

The days that followed were a lot of watching the news, reading papers. It was crazy. Soon after 9/11, I went to one of the county fairs in that area and saw Brooks and Dunn. They opened with “Only in America” and one of them had a guitar in the shape of the USA. The crowd went nuts. I was home that weekend, too, and went to a football game. They did a moving tribute before that, too.

The United States got back to business eventually.

But that date will always be there.

Ten years. It’s amazing that it’s been that long.

The contest: Remember 9/11.

The prize

What you have to do: In the comments section, write about where you were, what you remember and everything else about 9/11. How vivid are things? Give a little detail.

Other ways to enter: You have to first do the main thing. After doing that, you can earn additional entries by doing the following (a person can do each one, but only once each. So you can earn a total of five entries into the contest.):

  • Tweet about this contest by copying and pasting the following:

What can you win? A sweet Labor Day geocoin. It’s the closest I had to give for an “American” feel. It’s red, white and blue. Being it was originally part of the Geocoin of the Month club, it also comes with a pin.Even if you aren’t a geocacher, this is a really sweet coin to have and own!

Who can enter: This contest is open to anyone.

How decided? Random draw.

Entry deadline is 12:01 a.m. (Eastern Standard Time) Sunday, September 18. Results will be announced in a blog post here at noon on Sept. 18.

Contests, contests, contests!

September 7, 2011

Contests are coming to a ‘lil HooHaa.

Over the past several months, I’ve been putting aside things I knew I could give away in contests. They might be things I’ve picked up elsewhere, won at events or something else. Some people have donated things to me, knowing I’d be having some giveaways.

Some of the items I will be giving away might include:

  • Geocoins
  • Pathtags
  • T-shirts
  • Disc golf items
  • Autographed/game-used baseball cards
  • Signed photos (mainly mine)
  • Author-signed books
  • Geocache containers (such as micros etc.)

I am working on other things, too. I might get some gift cards for things like iTunes or something else. I believe I have a couple of DVDs I have put aside, too. I am working on a few other things.

The reality is, many of these items will be random and can be of interest to a wide variety of people. So I hope, no matter what the prize, you, the readers, will get into these contests and join them.

The best part for you? It’s free!

There will be several ways to enter and win. Many will include working the social media (twitter, Facebook, your own blog) or commenting on my posts. Some might require doing something else — though none will be too hard. I don’t want to scare people away. I want to attract new and old readers to visit my blog on a regular basis. There will usually be a small task to do to enter the contest (usually something in the comments section), but after that there will be easy ways to earn more entries into the contest.

I am going to aim to to a contest once every two or three weeks (depends on my supply of things to give away!). The rules will be quite simple. The time frame will be from noon on a Sunday (the post will be published at noon) and will run until the following Sunday at 12:01 a.m. (In other words, just after midnight!) That gives me time to figure the winner (and any runner-ups if there is more than one prize) and have a blog post ready by noon on Sunday to announce the winner.

The times will be strictly enforced. People will have a full week to do whatever they need to do. I would encourage you to do things early, however, so you don’t forget!

Once the contest ends, I will have use a random way of selecting the winner (it might be a video of me pulling a name out of the hat or it might be me using something such as Random.org, which allows one to put a lot of names in and it randomly picks the winner.

Some notes:

  • If you are someone who would like to donate something to the contests, I would love the donation. It can be anything. If you have ideas on the contest to go with the item, I would be more than happy to listen to the idea.
  • I will be paying for all shipping charges. Some of the smaller things (geocoins, pathtags etc.) will be open to everyone and anywhere. But if I have larger items, I might make it for the United States and Canada only, just because it might be cheaper on the wallet and worries.
  • Full rules will be in EACH contest post. I might change little things, pending on the contest. So make sure to look at the rules!

The first contest will be announced this Sunday. Make sure to check back here. Better yet, like the blog on Facebook to get updates! (There is a Facebook “like” button on the right side of the page, toward the top).

I am also always taking ideas for these contests. With a lot of things to give away, I’d like to make sure I have some cool contests. Keep checking back for your chance to win!

A quick hitter

September 5, 2011

Men’s champion Nate Doss has his photo taken by girlfriend and fellow disc golf professional Val Jenkins after Doss took the ceremonial plunge for winning the Vibram Open.

Just a quick one today. I’ll be back tomorrow with more.

I spent most of today processing photos and crafting a story for a magazine about the Vibram Open, a major disc golf tournament I volunteered at this past weekend.

It was pretty cool seeing a lot of the top professionals in action. Quite wild. I took a lot of photos while there.

You can see them all in a set on Flickr.

Another note for something I am working on with the blog — contests!

This weekend I got a bunch of things donated to give away for some contests. I have some other items I have put away for contests as well. Now I need to start having contests.

That’s where you can some in!

Can you let me know some ideas you might have for contests I can hold on the blog? I don’t want them all to be hard, but I also don’t want people to leave a silly comment or re-tweet the contest. While the goal is, of course, to grab some new readers, the reality is I want to hold a few cool contests, too.

Ideas are appreciated. Drop a comment or an e-mail!

A ‘lil HooHaa: Contest 1

June 21, 2010

Wanna win something? How about my new Ireland pathtag?

Here’s what it looks like:

Pretty sweet tag, eh?

This is a simple contest — and my first one! This will run just about a week, so you have a little time to come up with an educated guess as to the answer.

But wait! There’s more! You can win ANOTHER  pathtag! Actually, two people can win, depending on how good your guesses are. Because I don’t know how many responses I will get with my first contest, here’s a rule I am putting into place:

IF five (5) or fewer than people enter the contest (multiple entries, if earned, don’t count as new people), I’ll allow it where the same person can win both pathtags.

IF more than five (5) people enter, that means winners can only win one of the pathtags. Should one person sweep and get both correct, they’ll win the Ireland one and then the next two will go in the order of caches. You’ll see what you have to do below.

Nuts and bolts

Now for some quick normal things — this contest is simple and entrants will be able to see their answers. On my return from Dublin, I will look at everything, post the answers and winners and send out the prizes. Should you win, I’ll need a mailing address. This contest is open to anyone — in the USA or international. The winners will be notified on this blog and via my twitter account. The winner will then have to e-mail me an address.

Entrants are allowed ONE entry and please do not edit your entry once you have posted. The entry MUST be in the comments section. A correct entry will include your name and the answers to the contest questions. Please identify the answers for which question. (ie: Pub trips: xx).

You can EARN up to two more entries by tweeting this contest or posting an entry on your blog. If you do that, please let me know. HOWEVER, please wait a minimum of one hour from your last guess so as not to flood all the guesses. If you do either of these, please make sure you note that in your guess (ie: Second guess via tweeting your contest) so I can go check and verify. That means, also, making sure you have your blog address so I can check it out!

The contest

This contest is going to make you guess. You have to think about this a little. The winners will be whoever guesses the closest to the actual answer (you can go over).

It’s as simple as a guess.

You can guess once for each part of the contest, and note the above in the Nuts and bolts section to see how to do things.

Ready for the contest?

Some quick details on my trip so you can put it into perspective: I am arriving mid-morning on a Wednesday and leaving mid-morning the following Tuesday. So, basically I’ll be in Dublin and doing things for about 5 1/2 days. That’s the only thing I am releasing. If you want to investigate more, read past entries of the blog.

This contest will close at 10 p.m. EASTERN TIME on Tuesday, June 29. I get e-mails of all things posted and every comment is time-stamped, so if one comes after that deadline, it will be deleted and not counted.

FIRST PART — My Ireland Pathtag is the prize for this one.

I’m asking you this — how many pubs will I visit on my trip to Dublin? Remember, Dublin has more than 1,000 pubs! Pubs will include any bars, micro brews, traditional pubs etc. But I have to actually visit them, not just be in them.

Some things to note — I will be going on a few pub crawls. We might stop in one or two to eat during the day. I might go out after the night falls to investigate. Who knows?

SECOND PART: How many Geocaches will I find while in Ireland? I only am planning one full day of caching there, but I do hope to do some throughout the trip. Do your math and hope for the best. The winner will receive this pathtag:

Final things

Remember, one entry per person unless you do one of the following:

Twitter this contest — mention the contest and blog. Use the following to make it easy:

@softball29 is having a pathtag giveaway contest on his blog – www.hoohaablog.com. Enter soon as it ends June 29 at 10 p.m. EST!

BLOG about this contest on your blog, but mention the contest and link back to here as well! You must mention that you have done these in your second and/or third entries, but please make them different comment entries! Only one entry per comment and only three entries (if extras earned) maximum!

Have fun!

More later!

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
