Hacksaw entertains with his one-man show

February 18, 2016

Hooooooooo!

With that ever-popular catchphrase, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan can excite a wrestling crowd, even still as he has reached his 60s.

Originally from Glens Falls in upstate New York, Hacksaw played college football and was in the NFL before turning to the world of professional wrestling.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan laughs as he talks about his career at his one-man show in Binghamton.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan laughs as he talks about his career at his one-man show in Binghamton.

A favorite among many fans, he’s colorful, candid, and entertaining. He’s patriotic and will get a crowd chanting “USA USA USA!” without issues. And, he does it all with his trusty 2×4 by his side (or over his shoulder).

He stills gets in the ring occasionally, usually to throw a few punches or tag up, but he’s still out there entertaining people. If you follow him on Twitter or Facebook, you’ll get an inside look at the WWE Hall of Famer’s life as he travels all over to different types of wrestling shows, conventions or just a glimpse at life.

I’ve written about Hacksaw on the blog before, such as when he was doing a fundraiser for shoulder surgery, or just looking back at Hacksaw when he came to my hometown for an independent card. I’ve had in in various other posts when talking about professional wrestling as he’s one of my all-time favorites.

Recently, it was announced Hacksaw was doing a one-man show. The 2×4 Show is a way for people to get a glimpse behind the curtain, so to speak, and see Hacksaw in a different way. He’s on a stage talking wrestling, telling stories, and taking questions, which gives fans a true look at his remarkable career. He doesn’t hold back any punches, either.

Hacksaw keeps the crowd entertained with tales from the road.

Hacksaw keeps the crowd entertained with tales from the road.

I saw he had an upstate New York tour set, and was trying to plot where I could get to one. With five spots close enough to see this show, I knew I’d hit one. It turned out to be the closest – Binghamton.

One thing’s for sure – I definitely don’t regret going to this show.

The setting for the Binghamton show was at the Relief Pitcher, in a downstairs conference room. It was a nice and relaxed setting for the show. After a local opening comedian, Hacksaw took the stage and took the crowd of more than 50 through his career. The stories ranged from growing up in Glens Falls, to his football days, to becoming a wrestler.

His stories were candid, open, funny and genuine. He told the crowd about how he went from Big Jim Duggan to the Convict (in a mask) to Hacksaw, and how Bruiser Brody told him he needed something to carry to the ring, which led to his trademark 2×4. .

Originally a heel in the ring, he made his biggest stamp as a patriotic wrestler, leading crowds in the chants of USA. He fought the evil wrestlers, such as the Iron Sheik (no love lost between those two, which Duggan pointed out), and enjoyed success as one who battled Andre The Giant so many times.

Signing a 2x4 after the show!

Signing a 2×4 after the show!

He didn’t hide from the past, either. He was honest when a fan asked about the situation with he and the Iron Sheik riding together and getting pulled over. Duggan admitted to having some “doobies” under his seat and then it turned out the Sheik had cocaine in the car.

This was before the days where “the truth” of wrestling was known, so it was bigger news. It cost Duggan big time, but he would rebound.

One could tell how much Duggan enjoyed being with fans and talking stories and telling his tale. His well-placed “Hoooo” chants always kept the crowd into what was going on.

He also breaks the molds of some wrestlers as he’s been married to his wife for more than 30 years. She was with him at the show, at one point bringing him some water. He spoke amazingly highly of his family and how important they were to him.

Duggan also spoke about some of his closest friends in the business and how many of them are no longer with us.

The biggest thing I took away from this was how personable Hacksaw is. He took time to answer questions and didn’t shy away from things. He told about life on the road and in the ring. And following the show and Q&A session, he went to a table in the back where his wife was handling the sales of merchandise.

They worked so well as a team, too. She would get the name he was signing on items and make sure he knew what to sign, and even switching markers and such. That allowed Duggan to do what he is so good at – talking with fans and being personable to give each person in line a true intimate setting to talk with Hacksaw for a few moments.

My brother, Hacksaw and me after Duggan's one-man show.

My brother, Hacksaw and me after Duggan’s one-man show.

She also took the photos for people, with their cameras. It wasn’t like some independent shows where it’s one photo and gone. She made sure the photos came out well and Hacksaw would insist on a couple of different poses. The line might not have moved as swiftly as some may want, but it gave people their money’s worth, that’s for sure.

One final funny story from that night, and being in line. I wanted to get a photo, so it was going to be me, my brother, and Hacksaw. As I noted, his wife was taking the photos. So I set up my DSLR and was like “Now this isn’t like a phone, it’s big equipment.”

Yes, I was trying to be funny.

She responded “Don’t worry, I can handle big equipment.”

Yes, very funny.

To which (can’t make this up), Hacksaw laughs and says … yes she can, she’s a “HOOOOOOOOO!”

Laugh out loud funny! I can see why they have been married for (I think he said) 35 years.

I hope this tour and this show continue. If you have the chance to see the show, take advantage of it and go watch. Even for non-wrestling fans, it’s a cool experience and a lot of fun. It’s well worth the couple of hours.

HOOOOOOOOOOO!

Laughter is the best medicine — for pretty much anything

October 28, 2013

Ralphie Mae performs at SUNY Delhi.

I’m jealous of people who live where there are comedy clubs readily available.

I fully believe if I lived anywhere near a comedy club and the ticket prices were affordable, I’d go often. I’d especially like to go on open-mic nights to be able to see different things and people.

I can’t really explain what Ralphie May is talking about here as I’ll keep it clean on the blog. But let me say it was absolutely hilarious!

Comedy has long been a part of my life. From watching many big-name comedians at a local college (George Carlin, Howie Mandel, Michel Winslow, Carrot Top, Jay Mohr, and Sam Kinison, to name a few), to seeing smaller shows all over the place, I’ve long loved stand up comedy.

I’ve had the chance to see many different comedy places. From a cool little spot in Montreal, where we met and struck a friendship up with comedian Steve Caouette, to little dives with people hoping to make a few bucks in the world of comedy. Whether 15-minute quickies or an hour and half of pure hilarity, I’ve loved pretty much every comedy show I attended.

With that in mind, it’s pretty safe to say, whenever I get a chance to go, I like to do so.

On Sunday, I added a comedian toward the top of my list.

Chad, Ralphie May’s opener, got the crowd revved up and ready.

Ralphie May, well-known through his Comedy Central specials and for his appearance on Last Comic Standing, came to SUNY Delhi. He’s been to Delhi before, but I had never had the chance to see him. He was supposed to have a show a year or so ago, but had to cancel because of health reasons.

Allow me to say it was well worth the wait to see him perform.

First, his opening act, Chad of the Smash Brothers, was hilarious. He got some solid digs in on a few people in the front row, told some extremely funny stories and had the crowd warmed up amazingly for May.

Here’s one thing though — this definitely wasn’t a “family friendly” show. In other words, profanity and things along those lines were open game.

That made it really good.

Ralphie May and Marty following the show at SUNY Delhi.

His topics included pretty much anything, including some politics, racial lines, himself, and of course, some adult topics. He also utilized one of the students Chad had picked on a bit and got some good digs in as well.

It’s also safe to note that I was in stitches most of the night. I love a good laugh. It makes you forget anything else going on in the world. It can help make you forget anything bad going on and it gives you a way to kind of ignore anything else and just have a good time.

This was also the final big comedy show at the college under the watch of Marty Greenfield, SUNY Delhi’s Student Activities Director, who is retiring at the end of the semester. He’s been at the college for more than 25 years and has brought some amazing shows — comedy, music, sports (Globetrotters etc.), wrestling and so many more things.

Ralphie May was an excellent closing big comedy show. It’s safe to say the students and community members who attended the show went home happy, which is one of the main things a student activities director could ask for.

Carnival Pride cruise review: The entertainment

August 26, 2013

Our team, which took second in the Carnival Quest, posing with Carnival employees Autumn and Sassy, the assistant cruise director.

(This is the first in a six-part series about my first cruise. I sailed on the Carnival Pride from August 4-11. It started and ended in Baltimore, making stops in Port Canaveral, Florida; Nassau, Bahamas; and Freeport, Bahamas. The other parts of this series are scheduled to run  over the next couple of weeks).

When on a massive ship sailing out in the open seas, I always wondered how one would keep occupied.

Yes, I knew there were some things to do on cruise ships, be it a pool, or boozing it up, or a casino. But seriously, with more than 2,000 people on this vessel, how does one keep entertained?

Turns out it’s not so hard.

No matter if you are by yourself, with a small group or with a big group, you can find things to do on the boat and the forms of entertainment seem quite endless. Even better, when you have a staff that seems to truly care about each guest, it makes it more fun.

For the most part, I’ll be tackling the things I did when on the boat and I’ll throw in a couple of other things I didn’t participate in, which will hopefully give you the idea of things one can do.

Fun Times was a key to being able to see what was on the ship for entertainment each day.

I found the key to be actually seeing what is out there to be offered. Though I realize many people go on a ship to relax and not do a lot, the reality is the ship offers a ton to do.

With the ship I was on — and from what I understand, all Carnival ships — each night we got a copy of Fun Times. It’s a four-page newsletter that shows all the activities going on the following day. What’s even nicer is a tear-out sheet with everything in time order so you can carry it with you. The newsletter also points out the major happenings as well as any other pertinent info, such as the dress code for the dining room, hours of places and anything else you can imagine.

It was the most valuable item I looked at each day.

Outside of the first night, when I was still trying to figure out how things ran on the boat, I pretty much made sure I saw a lot of things while I was on the ship. On the night we set sail, I pretty much hung out a little. I went to dinner with our group and then walked around the boat. Looking back, I wish I had gone to the opening night’s stage show, which was a welcome aboard show. It looked like it would have been quite fun.

The key to my experience with stage shows came the following night, which was the first of two formal nights. At first, I wasn’t going to head to the dining room, but with lobster tail on the menu…

Anyway, at the start of the evening, people had the chance to meet the captain. Though I didn’t do that, soon after grabbing a beer, I bumped into the cruise director, Josh. We chatted for a bit as it turns out he had a place in Western New York and was a massive baseball fan (Cubs, though, so I felt a little sorry that he may never see a World Series champion). I had been trying to find out why there were no pins for sale on the ship as I am a pin collector.

In the end, it was cool as he got me a couple of pins for my collection, but ones not easy to get. He also told me I should make sure to see the stage shows and take advantage of many other things. I took his advice to heart. Now I realize that most cruise directors are probably quite solid at what they do. But I feel I got lucky that my first cruise had Josh as he really was quite helpful each time I chatted with him. His assistant — Sassy — was also top notch.

Below, I’ll tackle a bunch of the things I did and break them down into spots where I saw them.

The Main Stage

The shows at the main stage were top notch. I saw five of seven shows at night on the stage, missing the first-night show and skipping the Jazz one. Outside of that, I made sure to get there and watch the shows each night.

Not all were great, but I enjoyed them all for the most part.

Cruise director Josh acting as Dolly Parton during the final night’s show.

The second night was a show called Wonderful World, which featured some great music and showcased many countries and nationalities. It was quite the scene how they did it, for sure. The third night was a Motown show, featuring Marcus Anthony. This was pretty solid, though I felt it dragged a little at times and I would have liked to have seen a little more of the popular Motown stuff. That being said, after hearing about what he performed at the early show, it sounded like the two were different.

I skipped the fourth night, being the jazz show. I popped my head in briefly, but wasn’t too interested in what I saw, so I moved along.

The Love and Marriage Show on the fifth night was hilarious as they used three sailing couples, including one who had been married for 52 years. It was basically like the old show “The Newlywed Game.” My only complaint is that is dragged a little longer than I would have liked, but overall it was funny, entertaining and amusing to watch.

The sixth night went back to a stage show as they showed Vroom!, which may have been my second favorite (behind Wonderful World) as the music was fantastic, covered many years and was fully enjoyable to watch. There were songs performed from Huey Lewis to the Beatles to Elton John to Boy George to the Village People and to Lionel Richie. It was quite fun.

The Beatles during Vroom!

On the final night, it was the Carnival Legends, which had fellow cruisers dressing up and singing tunes of stars. One thing I would like to know is how they recruit these cruisers as it would be interesting to find out. Maybe through karaoke nights? Or something else. Either way, most were pretty solid and the show was really fun to watch.

Most shows lasted right about an hour and all but two or three had two showings — an early and a late. So it’s well worth seeing. I wasn’t disappointed in hitting up these shows, that’s for sure. I would like to know that it was Cruise Director Josh who pushed me to hit up these shows as when I talked to him on the second night, he really stressed these shows were worth hitting up. He was fully right.

Comedy Club

I love comedy. I’ve always been a fan of shows, especially in intimate settings, such as comedy clubs. I know a few comics — including one who works with cruise lines — so, I was fully looking forward to hitting these shows.

For the seven-day cruise, we had four comedians. Two in the beginning and two at the end. All were pretty solid and were different. I only watched one show of each, but it sounded like each show — including the family friendly ones — were different.

The Punchliner Comedy Club.

The club — Punchliner, presented by George Lopez — is a nice setup. The host/manager, Chris, was excellent and ran a nice setup. It ran along with most of the Carnival employees I met or dealt with — professional, friendly and do a solid job.

The first two comedians were Jim Brick and Faulkenberry. Brick performed the first night and the two then did several shows each night for the next two nights. I saw Brick’s first show and Faulkenberry the following night.

Brick was probably my favorite of the four for the week as he had me in stitches all night and also like to ride the crowd quite a bit, which I enjoy. Faulkenberry had a different style but the show I saw, I really enjoyed, too.

The final two, who performed first the night we were in Freeport, Bahamas, were Allyn Ball and Al Romas. The places were a bit more crowded for these shows than for the first two comedians. They were pretty solid, overall, and had some good stuff and created many laughs.

In the end, I loved the comedy club and it’s something I would look forward to on future cruises.

Carnival Quest

This, possibly, may be my favorite thing I did in regard to entertainment on the cruise. Basically, it was an adult scavenger hunt. It was explained in the “Fun Times” newsletter as follows:

If you’re an adult who wants to have fun, we’ve got just the thing. These insane adult-only team competitions will have you throwing your inhibitions into the sea. Must be 18+ to attend.

Two of us from the wedding group went to get involved with this. We needed a team of four, so a couple joined, giving us three guys and one gal.

Then the fun began.

Our teammates in the Carnival Quest, taking it for the team and earning some big points.

The hosts — assistant cruise director Sassy and a southern gal named Autumn — were funny and engaging. Through the competition, they’d tell you something they wanted. It could be anything. Such as a man wearing a bra.

But here was the key, you only had moments.

So it’s not like you could go off and find things. You had to improvise.

I will say this, thank goodness for boxer briefs.

One of the things they asked for was for one of the females on a team to go up wearing a pair of guy’s pants. As the three men on our team stood there, I figured what the hell. Off went the pants. I wouldn’t have done it if I wore tighty whities, let me tell you that. But in the end, it was hilarious. The things people had to do were too funny.

The biggest thing was a two-minute setup at the end where one of the team members (male) had to be dressed like a woman — with makeup and all. The couple in our group had a cabin nearby, so they got all the necessary items and got second place out of it. Too funny.

In the end, we took second as a team, giving us a couple of bottles of champagne, a boa, and medals for each of us. It’s one of those things I’ll never forget.

I will note, however, that the first-place team must have done this before. Why? They came with a bag of stuff and were ready for everything! Well done.

Other things to do

I was never without entertainment.

From smaller shows going on throughout the day, to people watching to slipping in and watching 10 minutes of bingo, there’s always something to keep one occupied.

I participated in several trivia games. Three of us — groom Dave, Gurney and myself — won sports trivia. So we got one of the “Ship on a Stick” trophies. I came close in several music trivia games to taking the top spot, but there was always one or two songs that got me. I’d know them, but I couldn’t remember the name/artist and that got me.

One thing I did was wander. Thought I didn’t participate in all of it, I watched some of the other things to do, such as karaoke. There’s, of course, the casino, where people were gambling throughout the night. I only gambled away a few bucks — one night on the roulette table, another in some slots. In the end, I think I used about $15 bucks and ended up only losing $9. I’m not much of a gambler, but it’s kind of fun to watch sometimes. I will say it wasn’t as crowded, most of the time, as I would have expected.

Sports trivia champs!

There was an Internet Cafe, too, so you could check up on the world. The prices weren’t too bad, but it would be hard to be online all the time on a ship as it would get expensive. A card room allowed people to go play games or cards whenever they wanted as well. On top of that, with all the chairs around, it was possible just to sit, relax and watch the world go by.

Then, there was the top decks. With putt-putt golf, a basketball court, a gym, a few pools and places to lounge, entertainment was never far away. The spa was up top, too. And if you wanted to avoid kids, there’s an adult-only area on the top with a smaller pool, lounge chairs and the such so you can relax away from the youngsters.

There’s also the shops on board, so people can browse or buy things. For the people who enjoy the upper deck, don’t forget about the water slide. Or a game of chess with the life-size board and pieces. Maybe some ping pong? There were also deck parties and fun things, such as the competitions to find the hairiest person on board. There was never a lack of things to do, that’s for sure.

On the final day at sea, there was also a Q&A session with Josh. That was a lot of fun, too, and I found out some interesting things about the ship. I’ll share those more in my overall wrap, which will be the final installment in this series of posts.

If there’s one thing I took away from the ship is there’s always something to do. The Fun Times newsletter really is key to seeing what’s out there and being able to find things. I was impressed with the entertainment on board and it’s a major reason why I could see myself going on future cruises, whether with people or by myself.

The faces of Steve Caouette

October 9, 2012

Steve Caouette performing at The Comedy Works in Albany in 2010.

In 2006, several of us took a trip to Montreal.

This trip was somewhat of an annual thing. A guys weekend, if you will. We’d bar hop a little, check out different things each year and whatever else. I’d always find a way to do some photography and it was a nice weekend away from it all.

I have always thought of Montreal as being able to visit Europe in North America.

This year was a bit different than normal, however. Two of us went up even earlier, making it a five-day trip. The others came up Friday.

Steve’s note that he wrote in my “Montreal 2006 Travel Notebook.”

One thing I decided to do during this trip was take a notebook with me and have people sign it. It could be people we meet, or each other, or whatever else. But the idea was to capture the trip in that notebook with the idea of being able to one day check back at it, remember the trip and smile.

It’s where I met Steve Caouette.

Caouette is a comedian. And, to be honest, he’s one of the funniest comics I’ve ever watched — and I’ve had the fortune to see many. I don’t know where I’d rank him among my all-time favorites who I’ve seen live, but I would be willing to bet he’d easily make my top-5 without a doubt.

His act is hilarious, he interacts with the crowd well and his noises and imitations he does are fantastic.

But I digress…

It was the second night of the trip to Montreal and we were sitting on the outside patio of our favorite Montreal watering hole, the Mad Hatter. The bar was emptying and we got chatting with these two fellas nearby.

We got the two of them to sign the book and they mentioned Steve was a comedian.

I’m willing to bet we asked him to say something funny. We were probably idiots like that. Ahh well, it happens, right?

Anyway, we were asked to come to the Comedy Nest the next night to see Steve perform. And, we were told there would be tickets waiting for us. For some reason, I didn’t buy it. But we agreed to go to the Comedy Nest the next night.

We arrived expecting to have to pay for tickets. We saw Steve’s poster plastered all around the area and we went to the front door. The conversation basically went like this.

Me: I believe there should be tickets for us?

Door guy: Name?

Me: P.J.

Door guy: Yup, here they are.

I was shocked, I won’t like. Further, we were seated at a table in the front. And what a treat that was. Talk about hilarious.

We hung out with Steve one or two more times that weekend. We even went back and checked him out a second time. And after that, I’ve kept in touch with Steve through the years, whether it be through Facebook or texts or whatever else.

Steve Caouette at The Comedy Works in Albany this past weekend.

A year or two after Montreal, he was scheduled for a show in Albany. So a couple of us went up. There wasn’t much of a draw for the second show that night, so we didn’t get to see him perform. Instead, it was a stroll to visit some fine establishments downtown.

I then got the chance to see him in 2010 when he hit Albany again, this time at The Comedy Works newer spot. He was hilarious, as per normal. I was in stitches just watching. The photo at the top of this post is from that show.

Steve was performing in Albany again this past weekend and I had the chance to get up there Friday night to see the show, which was held at The Comedy Works new spot. Let me say that the new spot for this club is outstanding. I’m sure it will take a little time for it to catch on at this locale, but it’s comedy only now. The food was excellent, the showroom felt like a great comedy club and the people working were all top notch and personable.

Back to Steve.

His show was, as it has been every time I see him, outstanding. But taking photos, I started realizing one thing that Steve is amazing at — his facial gestures. These sell his jokes so well and when interacting with the crowd, the faces he makes work for the situation at hand.

And that’s what I will be ending this post with — Steve and his countless faces. Below is a selection of those faces from the show in Albany this past Friday. I am leaving these images without captions — I hope you enjoy.

Life with Earl: Dining out

March 14, 2012

Life With Earl is a semi-regular feature on A ‘lil HooHaa. For the back story, click “Earl” at the top of the page to see past stories.

It was all set to be an easy night.

After a round of golf, the three of us — myself, Jay and The Big East — were figuring on heading to the next town over and eat. It’s a bigger college town so there are many options. And heck, a night away is the way to go.

Then the phone rang.

“Hey, P.J., whatcha doin’?” screamed the voice from the other end.

Little had I known that Jay has shelled out my phone number to Earl. I had made sure not to give it to that sucker.

And the look on Jay’s face made me realize he know who was on the other line. After shooting Jay a look, I went back to the call.

“Hey Earl … nothing really … why?

“Well, I figgered I’d hitch up to town and hang wit’ you and the boys.”

You can imagine I was a little worried about this.

“Well, Earl, we were actually leaving for College Town to eat.”

Considering Earl didn’t seem to have money too often, we didn’t think he’d want to go.

“Woooo hoooo!” Earl screamed into the phone. “I just made some cash on the course! I’ll come, too!”

We didn’t even have the chance to say no.

Before we knew it, Earl was knocking on the door and when we answered he had a big goofy smile on his face. I had slightly agreed to this only because Jay had handed out my number. If not, I would have found a way to skip out.

The punishment was on Jay, though. He got to share the back seat with Earl, who was dressed in his Sunday best — dirty jeans, a flannel and a hat that said “I go fishin’ cause I can.”

The worst thing happened as soon as we hit College Town. There’s a Hooters, you see, right as you hit the city limits. I think Earl almost jumped out of the car.

“WHOA! Hey guys, a HOOTERS!!” he exclaimed. “Let’s eat there! I ain’t never been to a Hooters before!!”

Jay piped in. “Actually, Earl, we were thinking of going elsewhere tonight.”

“And besides,” The Big Easy piped in. “Once you’ve seen a Hooters girl, you’ve seen them all.”

We seemed to forget that Earl hadn’t seen a Hooters gal before.

“But I wanna eat there!” he shouted. “Hot women, hot women and hot women! Maybe I can get a number or two.”

As soon as he blurted that last sentence out, I jammed the brakes, did a quick U-turn and soon pulled into the Hooters parking lot.

This was too good to not let happen.

The line was long. That didn’t stop Earl.

“Lines is made for cuttin’,” he said.

Sure enough, Earl cut the line. And, somehow, it worked. We were soon seated. The waitress was beautiful and, well, perfect in many ways. Earl noticed.

“Hiya boys. I’m Tiffany and I’ll be your server,” the waitress said. “Can I get you anything to drink?”

We ordered beers, but Earl was speechless. His eyes were focused on one part one body part of Tiffany.

To give him credit, he was at least staring straight ahead.

“And you?” Tiffany asked Earl.

Nothing.

The Big Easy responded by giving Earl a swift kick under the table.

“Uh, I’ll have a Coke.”

Tiffany walked away and Earl’s speechlessness left just as fast.

“This is the greatest day of my life. I can’t believe this,” he said. “That chick was all over me. She was eye …”

“Easy Earl,” Jay interrupted. “No need to get fresh.”

“I can’t handle this,” Earl said as he became flustered and somewhat sweaty. “I need to do something about this.”

Just like that, Earl popped up and took off outside. We could see him taking deep breaths and walking around the parking lot. He came back in and was confronted by a couple more Hooters girl. He then dashed to the bathroom for a few moments and came out, looking refreshed and drying off his face. That big goofy grin had returned, too.

“A little water to the face always wakes me up,” he said.

He then peered at the menu.

“Woooooweeeee, look at these prices,” Earl said. “A feller could go broke in here if he came once too often. But dang, look at all these women!”

Earl’s eyes, again, started to bulge from his head. His jaw seemingly rested on the table.

“Earl, drooling isn’t attractive,” Jay said.

“And I think it’s against health codes, too,” The Big East said.

Tiffany returned to take our order and Earl’s eyes, again, fixated on her upper body. I actually felt bad for this girl. She was only doing her job.

Giving an order to a waiter or waitress is a simple process, at least to those who hit up places to eat sometimes. I ordered a burger and fries, as did Jay and The Big Easy. We also ordered some of Hooters’ famed wings.

Earl was still looking at the menu.

“What do you recommend?”

A slap to the forehead knew I was in for a long night.

“Well, as you can see, we offer pretty much anything you could want in a place like this,” Tiffany said. She seemed to be losing her patience, but was holding it well. “Our burgers are fantastic, the wings are famous. I don’t think you guys came here for a five-star meal.”

Earl didn’t budge.

“Earl, do the lady a favor and order,” The Big Easy said. “I am actually hungry and would like to get the food today.”

Though it was almost painful — as he knew Tiffany would then leave the table — Earl ordered. All that time for a burger and fries.

After Tiffany left, Jay smacked Earl on the back of his head, sending his prized hat flying across the table.

“Listen you dork, if you want to come out with us, control yourself,” Jay said. “We don’t need you pitching a tent and lifting the table with every girl that walks by. Calm down!”

And just like that, Earl stood up, picked up his hat and left the table. Not a word was said. I had wondered if Jay had found a way to push Earl too far.

“You didn’t have to smack him, Jay,” The Big Easy said.

Before Jay could answer, Earl re-appeared — sporting a “Hooters –CollegeTown” shirt.

Apparently, there were no hard feelings.

Surprisingly, dinner was uneventful. We ate, got the bill and we seemed ready to leave. As Tiffany returned with our change, however, Earl decided to make his move.

“So what are the odds I can get your number?” Earl asked, trying to pull off his best James Dean imitation. “I’ve seen you looking at me all night.”

I believe Tiffany wanted to die on the spot. Figuratively and literally. She just stared. The three of us buried our heads in our hands.

No answer came. That didn’t stop Earl, who had the second move up his sleeve. As he got up, he put his arm around Tiffany.

“Come on, I’ll take you somewhere fancy and we can get to know one another,” Earl said.

With that, Earl experienced his first kick to the family jewels. He went down like a ton of bricks. Tiffany then asked us to kindly remove our friend.

“You guys aren’t banned, but never bring him back,” she said.

We apologized over and over as we pulled Earl out of the restaurant. We threw him in the back of the car and got out of there as fast as we could.

Twenty minutes later, Earl seemed to finally get his breath back.

“Man oh man, that was great,” he exclaimed! “She touched me! I knew she wanted me! Did she give you guys her number to give me? Come on, don’t lie!”

The number we gave him was 555-1212. I can’t imagine the look on the operator’s face when Earl called and asked her about being a Hooters girl.

I was hoping that would be the end of Earl. I really was. But Jay keeps calling him. And that is usually followed by how much we loved hanging out with him.

It seems we’re stuck with Earl.

Heaven help us.

Harper is counting down to Santa Paws! You know, Harper is counting down to Santa Paws!

You know, of course, Santa Paws travels with Santa Clause, making sure to find treats and toys for all the good little doggies! (We know they are all deserving, right?) So, Harper put out some milk for the big guy, carrots for Rudolph and the reindeer, and special cookies for Santa Paws! She is ready!

I look at her and sometimes still can’t believe I look at her and sometimes still can’t believe I have her. It’s been a year and four months and she makes me smile and laugh more each day. It’s amazing how much a dog changes your look on life, and how much joy they can bring.

A video looking at my first year and a half of owning a golden retriever, my first dog. It's had its ups and downs, but I've truly loved the ride and look forward to the future.

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
