I’m not a big trader when it comes to geocaching.

For those who don’t know, one aspect of geocaching is “take something, leave something.” In larger caches, there is often swag, usually little trinkets, where people will take something and leave something.

I don’t like carrying things around too much, so I don’t usually trade.

There is one thing, however, I love trading for — signature items. These are things individual cachers make to show they’ve been at a cache. It can vary — heavily — what the item is.

I’ve gone through several different things, including custom wood coins, pencils and other things.

This week’s edition of this post shows one of the wooden coins I’ve used in the past. I have a large collection of sig items I’ve traded my own for, so I hope people have enjoyed them!

Collectible Closeup: Dec. 18

Of the things I collect, my pin collection may be my favorite.

Whenever I travel, or go to a museum/park/event, I try and get a pin. I have a couple of dark blue small quilt hangers where the pins go. Each one has a memory attached, which is cool.

Especially events that shaped my life.

The one I am sharing today is one of them — a media pin for the 2004 Baseball Hall of Fame Inductions. Though, I have to be honest, I’m not sure if I was actually at the event. That being said, I did cover the orientation tours and a couple of other things in conjunction with the actual induction ceremony.

I have several other pins from the following years, but this one is meaningful because it was my first one. I’ll share more pins in the future, but I thought this made for a good first pin to post.

Hall of Fame Induction media pin.

Collectible Closeup: Dec. 11

As a geocacher, I’m a fan of geocoins.

Basically, geocoins are trackable items that travel from cache to cache. However, there are also coins people keep in their personal collection. In that case, one can discover the coins etc.

Today, I am showing the first coin (that I remember, anyway) that made my personal collection. It came from a Groundspeak volunteer, who was really helpful to me during my first few months of caching. He sent me a “care package” with a couple of cache containers and this coin. It’s a coin given to volunteers. Some keep them, some set them in the wild and some give them away,

I was lucky enough to get one.

It’s still one of my favorite coins in my collection, too.

The front and back are below.

Collectible Closeup: Nov. 6

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies.

And, growing up, Mike Schmidt was one of my favorites. What an amazing player. One of the best, without a doubt, to ever put on a Phillies uniform. So when I got back into collecting baseball cards, I knew I needed a Mike Schmidt autograph.

Turns out it wasn’t easy to get.

I lost auction after auction on eBay. The problem was, I just wasn’t willing to spend through the roof for a card.

And then it happened.

For less than $20 (I think I paid $15-17 for this one), I got the card I had been seeking. Even better? This was a 15/15, so even rarer. Loved it!

(Note, the scratches in the photo are the plastic case it’s in — those details came up a ton in the scan!)

This is, by far, one of the best cards in my collection and one I don’t see myself parting with.

Michael Jack Schmidt!

Collectible Closeup: Oct. 23

Welcome back to my weekly feature on collectibles — things I collect.

This week, I’ll be getting into some autographs. Normally I would focus on one thing, but with this item — there are several autographs.

The program comes from the early 1990s. It’s a pro wrestling event with the UWF, which, at one point, was a blossoming federation that looked like it could become quite mainstream. A friend had gone to one of their massive events (pay-per-view or television, I believe) and got to be backstage and meet a lot of the people.

He brought this program with all of these autographs back for me.

There are a lot of autographs on here. At least one of these people is dead. I can figure out who most of them are. There’s one (on the left, midway up the program) where I have absolutely no clue.

So how many can you figure out? Feel free to post below!

How many can you identify?

I will try and remember to come back and post in the comments section who I can identify. Hopefully others can figure the others!
