Collectible Closeup: Oct. 16

October 16, 2013

Welcome back to my weekly feature on collectibles — things I collect.

This week, I’ll be sharing something in geocaching — Pathtags. I have a pretty big collection of these, including a few I’ve had made.

Basically, Pathtags are another sort of signature item, but leaning more toward a geocoin. There is a trackable number, but it’s for all of the same tags. If you get a certain tag, the number is the same as all of the others. But you still log it on the Pathtags site, and there’s a map so the owner (and public, if he or she chooses to make it available) can see where the tags have gone.

Unlike most geocoins, however, Pathtags are something you keep and don’t have to move on.

The cool part about these, too, is the hole in the tag, so you can essentially turn it into a keychain, if you so choose.

The tag I am sharing with you today is one I made for 2010, shortly before my trip to Ireland. I had a goal to make at least one tag a year, but I just haven’t had the funds for it. This is one of the last ones I’ve made. I look forward to the day I can make them again as Pathtags are a highly traded item.

The tag I made for 2010, shortly before heading to Ireland.

I will share more pathtags down the line, whether mine of some of the favorites I have traded for. It’s truly amazing what some people have done with these tags, and I’ll be showing off some of the cooler ones I’ve collected.

Collectible Closeup: Oct. 9

October 9, 2013

Welcome back to my weekly feature on collectibles — things I collect.

This week, I’ll be sharing a signature item from geocaching. For those who don’t know much about geocaching, some cachers like to create personal signature items. Think of them as calling cards of sorts.

They can be anything — from wood coins, to cards, to something way more creative.

I collect signature items. When I find them in a cache, I’ll trade one of my signature items for the one I am trading. I’ve had several over the years, from wood coins to personalized pencils (my current one). I’m working on my next sig item, too.

So this week, I’ll be sharing a signature item.

This one comes via Mike, AKA Wardrums, a cacher from the Utica area. He caches in our area a lot as he’s originally from the area. He works in a business where he can print things often, so he has a lot of different things he drops.

The one here is one of his normal drops, a dog tag. It’s a cool design and he packages them in small Ziplock bags to keep them dry and clean. Very cool stuff. I have a bunch of Mike’s sig items, so others might show up in this spot some other time, too.

A signature item from Wardrums.

I’ll have more signature items down the line in this spot. Keep a watch each Wednesday as I show off more from my collections!

Do you collect things? If so, let me know. I’m thinking about making this a weekly linkup, too, if others want to do a Collectible Closeup of sort. I don’t want to do it if people aren’t into it, though!

Collectible Closeup: Sept. 25

September 25, 2013

I’m a bit of a collector.

I have a few things I like to work on collecting, as funds go. Baseball cards is a big love of mine, as well as geocaching coins, pathtags, geocaching signature items and pins, which I get when I travel or go to different places. I also have some random autographs I like to collect. The one other thing I have, which might be hard to showcase here, is some art. It’s mainly street art and things like so that I grab when I travel.

I’m sure there might be a few other things, but those are the main ones.

In those collections, I have some cool things. At least in my eyes. So I’m going to try and do a weekly feature here where I showcase a different piece of my collection.

This is the first week of it.

Of course, to start things off, I need to go to the baseball card collection.

And it makes sense to go with Pete Rose.

Growing up, I was a massive Pete Rose fan. I’m a firm supporter of him being in the Hall of Fame. Rose was toward the end of his stellar career when I started watching him. I was a Phillies fan and he brought a whole heap of experience to that team, helping the Phils win the 1980 World Series.

Here’s the card:

Pete Rose autograph.

Being Rose is banned from baseball, I’m pretty sure that means he can’t have any cards in sets that are connected to the MLB or the MLB Players Association.

So a couple of years ago, Leaf put out a set all about Pete Rose. As you can see, there are no team logos in the image. Anyway, if you purchased a box of these cards, you got several packs (the cards were decent) and a guaranteed autograph. I already have a couple of Rose autographs — one I got in person and it’s signed on a ball, and the other is a large photo given to me as a college graduation present from a friend — but having one on a card was too much to pass up.

I purchased the box and this is the autograph I got.

It’s a sharp signature and a pretty decent card. I don’t know if I’d buy the box again as it was a little more expensive than the card is likely worth (Rose signs a lot), but it was fun to open this box. My only disappointment was the card was in a top-loader holder (which is OK), but just in the box. I didn’t get the thrill of opening it in a pack to see what I got.

Still, it’s a great addition to my personal collection. I’ll share more from all my collections in coming weeks!

North of the border this weekend to get away and hit a few caching events and geocache. Dinner tonight was at @harpersburgers, especially with outdoor seating and dog friendly! @harper_dublin got to enjoy a little of my #burger, of course. And, yes, I got poutine, duh! Great service and great food! Went back later for a spiked shake. This one was a Malibu Colada (malibu rum, dark rum, vanilla ice cream, and pineapple juice) … yum!

Good times! Looking forward to another event and caches on Saturday before heading home!

It’s especially nice in the morning when college isn’t in session as it’s quiet and @harper_dublin can sniff and explore her surroundings (if in session, she will want to stop and meet every student etc.). A video looking at my first year and a half of owning a golden retriever, my first dog. It's had its ups and downs, but I've truly loved the ride and look forward to the future.

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
