changing seasons

Cough, cough, sniffle, sniffle

September 14, 2015

What is it with this time of the year?

Yeah, I know, the seasons are changing. But as I write this at the end of a dreary weekend, it annoys me even more as I know by the time you read this, I’ll be in the office and probably not feeling all that great. And I know I’ve had this happen to me during this time of year in the past.

It started early Friday afternoon when I had a tickle in my throat. I knew that wasn’t a good sign. Later in the day, swallowing slightly hurt. I went to a baseball game and things seemingly were a tad better. That night, a little bit with the swallowing again, but water helped.

I slept pretty well Saturday, though I didn’t get many hours as I was playing softball in the morning. It was a dreary day. By the time we were done, it was drizzling some. By the time I headed home, I felt decent but it was still lingering.

Saturday into Sunday – I slept well. I figured that would help, but it seems like it’s morphed into a small chest/head cold. Just what I don’t feel like dealing with. I’ve had a few coughs and the sniffles. I’m sure Monday will be a day of a stuffy head, so we’ll see how this whole thing grows or goes away.

It’s supposed to be rather dreary on Monday, so it’ll be a good day to jump into a bunch of things at work and kind of close myself in my office.

It’s good when there are a few things piled up and you know you need to get them done – and you have a bit of a cold. You know you can bury yourself in the work and hopefully make the day go faster.

My true hope is this dang thing only lingers for a day or so and doesn’t turn into a full-fledged cold as I don’t really feel like taking time from work and I don’t really feel like being sick, especially being the weather is supposed to be pretty nice later this week. We will see.

Hopefully your Monday is better than I am imagining mine will be!

The seasons soon will be changing

August 30, 2012

It doesn’t quite look like this outside yet, but I saw a few trees already starting to change.

I was out for a quick drive yesterday and saw colors starting to hit a few trees.

Add that to the cool night and I realized the seasons were getting ready to change. Sure, the official “date” for the fall isn’t for another three weeks or so, but little things have made me realize it’s coming.

  • It’s gotten darker earlier
  • It’s cooler at night (thankfully)
  • Schools are starting
  • College kids are back

I don’t mind the fall. It’s pretty for photography. And, truthfully, after the hot summer we’ve had, I’m ready for it to cool off slightly. But the days get shorter and that means, eventually, daylight savings time comes and it becomes dreary.

Despite the heat of this summer, it did go pretty quick.

It’s also a tough time for my industry — especially for somebody looking for a job — because this isn’t the ideal hiring time. I guess it truly is time to start considering another career field and see what else is out there.

This summer has been OK, but I was hoping to be somewhere else by now, working and feeling what it’s like to be in that world again. Alas, nothing. It’s been a stressful and, at times, depressing stretch of time for me. Summers make it slightly easier when you’re not working because you can be outside, do some exercise, play softball or something else. Still, it’s hard because you see people going on wonderful vacations and know doing that is nearly impossible right now.

I still say something will eventually happen. It has to, right?

The change in the season isn’t always bad.

There are wonderful festivals in the fall and different things to photograph. The colors are usually quite wonderful. The air is crisp and nice. But this eventually leads to winter.

Who knows how this winter will be?

Last year was very mild. We didn’t get a lot of snow and it was decent all around. Will this year be worse? Will it be one filled with snow? Who knows.

For now, it’s still summer.

There’s still enough daylight after the “normal” work day hours to go out and do something. Take a walk. Find a geocache. Get a quick round of golf or disc golf in. Ride a bike. Go out for a paddle.

Seeing the colors on the tree really make me realize that some of these things — specifically the daylight part — will be going away for the year, soon enough. Eventually, darkness will be setting in before some people are out of work.

So take advantage of it. Get out and do something with the day. Or the weekends. And enjoy still being able to get outside in shorts and a t-shirt while you can.

But those seasons — they’re definitely a changin’.

I wrote this about Sam Nader during a public celebration of his 100th birthday. I'm sure I'll have something more in the next day or so as well, but this covers a lot about my thoughts of this amazing man. RIP, Sam. You'll be missed.
