board game convention

Looking back at ConnCon

April 4, 2016

For the second straight year, I had the chance to attend ConnCon – a gaming convention held in Stamford, Conn.

Last year was the first year I went and I really enjoyed myself. It was a weekend full of board gaming, meeting people, and just relaxing.

This year, I went back and had the chance to do it slightly different as I had a year under my belt, so it wouldn’t be such a surprise as the first year.

I had the chance to play a game I backed on Kickstarter.

I had the chance to play a game I backed on Kickstarter.

What really makes ConnCon so good is the people. The organizers and so many of the players there make things fun. Those who take the time to teach games do an excellent job and everybody is welcoming, which is nice. The place it’s held (Sheraton) is a perfect spot, too.

One thing I did was play a few more lighter games this year. Though I don’t mind a heavy game sometimes, it seems to take way too long to explain the rules, then play etc. I understand why – don’t get me wrong – but I often get lost when rules explanations are going on when they are too long. I’m better with an overview and some of the rules and then play – I learn games way better that way.

There was one game I played there that was somewhat like that. It took way longer than I would have liked and kind of took away from the experience. The setup and instruction was about an hour and then the game went a little longer than I expected. In the end though, it’s a good game, but I just would have rather not taken up the time at the con playing it.

In the end, I played about 25 times over the weekend (with 19 games being unique – something that I like). As noted, many were lighter, so it was nice just to sit back and play games. I also learned a few games I’ve really wanted to play, so that was super sweet.

TOP GAMES:

There were a few games I really enjoyed. These may not necessarily be the best games there or anything, but I base this on the fun I had and the group I was with etc.

Nations: The Dice Game

A game I’d like to add to my collection. Shorter version than the Nations main game. Solo variant makes it highly interesting.

New York 1901

Fun tile-placement and card-building style game, along with area control. I enjoyed the mechanics and will likely add it to my collection as I can see playing this with non-gamers.

La Isla

A game I own, so it was nice to learn and get to play it. I’m a fan of the designer and this game is no different than others I’ve played.

Steam Works

A new game I learned and one of the ones I had looked forward to the most. Good times and a cool game.

NOT-SO-TOP GAMES:

These are the ones where the experience wasn’t necessarily the best, and has no reflection on the game. But it might have been overly long, or the people I played with etc. A couple of these games, too, are only for a few items – but I’ll explain below.

La Isla was a big hit for me.

La Isla was a big hit for me.

Two Rooms and a Boom

I love this game – and the “night” group played it four times. The bad experience was only one of those games, but it irritated me enough that I put it on this list. Let’s just say one people in one of the later games decided to play his own way (it’s a party game) – which is fully fine. But he didn’t like that I didn’t “follow” and got a bit testy. So it kind of ruined that game. The other three were fine.

Biblios Dice

Again – one of the two games I played was brought down by how/who played. People have styles on how to play games and sometimes said styles clash. The other time I played the game was highly enjoyable. In the end, I won a copy of this one and am super happy because of it. I love Dr. Finn’s games and this is no exception.

Trickerion

This isn’t the game or the people I played with, rather it just seemed to drag with instruction and the early going of the game. I like the game and the theme. It was just one of those days and such where I wasn’t ready for a game like that and … it just wasn’t a blast.

PitchCar

I wanted to try this and I’m glad I did, but I just didn’t like it. The people playing were fine and the idea of doing it all was fine, but … I just didn’t like the game.

OVERALL

In the end, no matter what, I had a great time. This year I made sure to go out one night for dinner and not just stay in the hotel the whole time. I didn’t fill up every slot with games, which allowed for some extra time for open gaming. We also stayed for the closing ceremonies, which was OK … but I’m not sure if I’ll do it again as it’s not until a bit after 5, and getting home at nearly 10 and having to work the next day is a little tough.

I’m looking forward to FalCon (their fall version – in late October) and then again ConnCon next year. It’s a great con, not too big, and full of great games and friendly people. It’s affordable (the hotel is a decent price, the Con is priced well, and there’s food options), and it’s in an easy area to get to. I’m looking forward to the next one!

Getting ready for ConnCon!

March 16, 2016

ConnCon is upon us!

This weekend, I will be heading to my second straight ConnCon, a board game (and other games) convention held in Stamford, Connecticut.

Basically, it’s going to be three days full of playing games.

I’m excited for it this year, as I have a better understanding of how things go down there. Last year, I registered for every slot, not realizing how much “open gaming” there is. I also know that I don’t have to be going full speed, which is a good thing.

This is my preview of sorts for what I am signed up for and what I am hoping to see there etc.

Games I’m signed up for:

Slot 1: Ticket to Ride: United Kingdom & Pennsylvania

This features two new maps for Ticket to Ride. I like the look of the Pennsylvania one as it has a couple of close cities to me in New York, too. I don’t know if I’ll ever buy the maps, so it was something I thought would be fun to try and likely not the full slow, thus allowing me to check into the hotel and such before the next slot.

Slot 2: New York 1901

This is another game I’ve looked to try as I like the theme. I’ve never had the chance to play it, so this seemed like the perfect spot.

Slot 3 (late night): Open

I learned last year that scheduling the late-night spots wasn’t always needed, so I decided to skip that aspect this year. The late-night slots were fun last year as there were some cool party games (such as Two Rooms and a Boom), but there’s also the chance to do some open gaming.

Slot 4: Castles of Mad King Ludwig

Interesting theme and I liked the sound of the game. It also has a solo variant, so if I like the game, it might be something I’d consider eventually purchasing.

Slot 5: Steam Works

A cool-looking worker-placement game, it’s a theme I can, again, get into. If you can’t tell, I’m somebody who likes certain themes when it comes to games. This one sounds like it will be fun and I look forward to it.

Slot 6: Trickerion: Legends of Illusion

I’ve played this game, but we thought we might have been doing something wrong, so two of us are signed up to play this one. I enjoyed it (you are a magician putting on shows) as the theme is interesting and the mechanics of the game are cool as well.

Slot 7 (late night): Open

See the open slot above.

Slot 8: German Railroads

A huge fan of the Russian Railroads game (which, eventually, I need to get), I’ve been interested in this expansion. If I’m not mistaken, it’s not just a new “map,” but rather a few new things about the game, which will be cool.

Slot 9: Steampunk Rally

This is one of the ones I’m really looking forward to. I like the whole Steampunk feel, and the mechanics and what you need to do in this game looks like a lot of fun.

—

Last year at the con, I played nearly 30 games. I am not sure I will get to that level this year as I also plan on going out for dinner one or two of the nights there. Last March, I kind of ate there (I was on one of the upper floors, where you get food in the morning and at night – I didn’t get that this year), so I’d like to get out and walk a little and find some places to enjoy a dinner etc.

For me, this is a mini vacation. The hotel is nice, so hopefully I’ll get a couple of nights of good sleep, have some fun playing games and just enjoy the time.

Either way, it’s going to be a fun weekend full of gaming, which I’ve been looking forward to. It’s also just a way to get away and not have too many things to worry about. Depending on the driving/riding situation (I am driving for sure, but not sure if I am solo or not), I might stop to do some photography and/or geocaching on the way down or back, but we’ll see about that.

I’m sure I’ll post about the con after I get back, so we’ll see how many games I end up tackling when it’s all said and done!

Heading off to ConnCon

March 12, 2015

Over the past couple of years, I’ve gotten into board games. I’ve talked about this some on the blog, but these aren’t the normal games many people would think about – such as ones like Monopoly, Life etc.

Don’t get me wrong, I still actually dig The Game of Life a little. Well, the theme and the idea. But now that I’ve played deeper games, something tells me it could be way better.

Anyway, I’ve learned a lot about board games over this time. Mainly that many of these games are extremely deep and show you different mechanics – and there are a lot of mechanics. Those can include anything from worker placement, to pickup and delivery, to card drafting, to deck building, to cooperative games, to … well, so many more.

Playing games.

Playing games.

Let’s just say this isn’t your grandfather’s board game.

What I’ve truly liked is being able to get into a game group to play a bunch of games. I go almost every Saturday, and the occasional Friday to play games. There are favorites, of course, as well as some games I’ve just not enjoyed (one this past weekend, but I still gave a valiant effort to win… alas, it wasn’t meant to be. I’d actually like to try this game again with fewer players), and ones I thought were OK.

We’ve play-tested a few games as well, created by two of the people who are in the game night (one of them is the host) and it will be neat to see the game push forward and move along.

All the while, the host of the night (George) has talked about a game convention he went to last year and how much fun it was. Basically, it’s gaming for three straight days. After thinking about it, I decided I needed to experience it. Heck, at worst, it’s a blog topic!

So this weekend, actually the night that this post comes out, I’ll be heading to Connecticut for ConnCon.

I know there are many different levels of gaming conventions. I honestly don’t know where this falls. I don’t know if people dress up and such for the role-playing aspect, or if it’s just some people getting together to play games. I guess I’ll find out when I get there.

One thing I’ve really found out through gaming is how diverse the population of people playing can be and are.

Yes, I’m sure we all have some sort of stereotype when it comes to gamers. But I’ve found that it goes way beyond. There are people of all backgrounds playing games, which is really kind of cool. It’s another hobby that brings people together who may never have come together if not for the common interest.

So I’m looking forward to this weekend, but wonder if I locked myself in too much. There are a bunch of slots where there are organized games and I filled them. I’m wondering if I should have left a slot or two open for open gaming, or just roaming to see things as they unfold.

Either way, I am sure I’ll still have some free time. I plan on trying to take some photos and check things out for a future blog post, but I’m pretty excited about going. Here’s hoping for a positive and fun experience for a weekend getaway!

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
