Softball still fun after 25 years

September 4, 2014

fb

For those of you who know me, you know I’m pretty active in the summer with softball. In fact, it’s been a massive part of my summers for 25 years now. Of those years, all but one has been spent running at least one team.

I’ve played in several leagues and tournaments at all levels. I’ve played modified pitch (mainly) and slow pitch. I’ve also won championships and had my softball heart broke more than one time.

There were summers where I played nearly 100 games or so, and others where I didn’t even reach 20.

But it’s always been a part of my summers.

Coming into this season, I thought it was going to be it. Being 40 makes it harder to do things like this. I can still play some and I have started pitching a little, so there’s time to stay in the game. But the time it takes makes it harder and harder.

Still, this season is one of those that make you want to come back for more.

2014 League Champs!

2014 League Champs!

I’m also way mellower than I have ever been. Don’t get me wrong, in the 2-2 1/2 hours on the field, I want to win and compete. But when it’s all said and done, I want to smile, know I played the game hard and go have a cold one or hang out with friends.

Winning doesn’t suck, however.

Winning also makes you want to keep coming back. We came pretty close to a perfect season. We lost the opening game of the finals – our first loss of the season – and came storming back to win the next two to complete an 18-1 season and win the championship – our third in that league (well, to be fair, it’s kind of a different league now … but same place).

The funny part is how some from the other team actually said to some of our guys that they were better than us and should have won (we beat them in the series this year, 4-1, and outscored them 82-31 in those games, including 37-13 in the three-game finals series), despite the numbers proving otherwise. That being said, the finals were pretty exciting, though long breaks and such were pretty key in us all of a sudden not hitting as we had (I think, in the full series, we left the bases loaded at least 5-6 times, several times having them loaded with one out), but we played solid in the field and earned the title.

I also played three games in another league (and wasn’t eligible for the playoffs), but that team won the championship – also losing but once game.

The season ended with a trip to nationals with mixed team. Despite not reaching our goal (winning a game), it was an interesting experience and the first time I’ve been to nationals in several years.

Personally, I had one of the best hitting seasons I’ve had in a long time. I pitched a few games, but need to pitch more if I’m ever going to be regular at it. The funny part is I had the second lowest batting average on my team – at .419. We hit .502 as a team. That’s pretty crazy!

Nationals 2014.

Nationals 2014.

In the end, it was a truly fun season. The regular season went decent, and despite the playoffs dragging on way too long, the end result was worth the wait.

Initially, my thought was to move to the over-35 league next year. That’s out the window. I’m into it again. I’d love to play more. Maybe hit a few tournaments. States. Nationals. A league and do well again … why not? Who knows how many years I can do this, so I may as well stick it out.

For years, I always did the “right thing” as the manager and took a seat when we had extras. This year, I decided to play more, especially hitting. I’m glad I did as it gave me the drive to continue playing this game.

At least for as long as my body allows.

Foto Friday: The archives

February 10, 2012

My external hard drive is starting to fill up. That pretty much means I need to start shifting some things and deleting, or I might not have room for a lot of photos.

I have three external hard drives, but two of them are full and the third, which is a terabyte, doesn’t have much left. I know there’s a lot of waste on all three of them. So, over the next few weeks, it’s my hope to really clear a lot of space. In the end, I’d like to have the TB drive be all photos only — so I can get an online backup service as well.

Anyway, as I do that, I got peeking at some older photos. And that got me interested in looking at some older photos on Flickr, too. So, in this post, I am going to share some of my favorite (or not so favorite) photos from the Flickr archives. Things are going to be random. I am going to hit a few random pages and snag a photo of those pages and share them here.

I’m hoping to head out and shoot some fireworks tonight, so if things come out as I hope, I’ll look to share what I did and such with the images next Friday.

Ahhh, this past September. We got some unseasonably warm weather and this page was basically filled with sports photos — a softball tournament and some flag football. Here’s one of those shots.

Foul ball!

I had been catching up on posting some images, including from my trip to Ireland in 2010. Those photos were on this page.

Good advice!

I hope you enjoyed a slight trip through the archives with me. I’m sure as I get going through these external drives, I’ll be sharing more — and uploading a lot more to Flickr. I want to get a lot more of my photos on Flickr and put them together as sets. That way, they are there for all to see!

Starting out strong

June 21, 2011

Being as we’ve reached the mid-season point for our city-league softball season, I thought I’d do a quick post today about that.

After all, we’re 8-0 and two games up in the eight-team league. The team we played in the championship last year is 6-2 and we issued a 20-5 whipping of them the other day. (To be fair, we each started short-handed because it was a rainout makeup game. We ended up having the 10 needed, but they were two short the whole game. Still, we mashed the ball that night. I’ll anticipate a much closer game the next time we face them).

As I cleaned and organized my trunk the other night, I also found my cleat changes (I have interchangeable cleats) and put on a new set of polys today, so I’m looking forward to having some traction.

Anyway, the season is going well. We finished 16-2 last year and won our first league title in that league and first overall since 2001. Not that we haven’t been in the mix or in the finals, we just couldn’t get over the hump.

We’ve continued that success this season.

We’ve had a few close calls, that’s for sure. In one game, we won 10-7 after trailing. The following game, we trailed 11-3! Alas, we rallied for an 18-11 victory.

The statistics (I’ve finally started keeping them again as people seem to love them… me included. Found a  nice excel sheet that does a good job with it) are somewhat mind-boggling.

See, there are probably four teams in the upper-echelon of the league. We’re all on the same page, for the most part. But we’ve been hitting everyone this year and also been playing good defense. Our pitching, at times, has been hit, but we’ve found a way to battle out of any tight situations.

Some stats:

  • As a team, we’re hitting .505 (140-for-277).
  • We’ve walked 52 times.
  • Of our 277 hits, 84 have gone for extra bases (43 homers, 31 doubles, 10 triples).
  • You read right, we have 43 homers.
  • Our on-base percentage is .565.
  • Our slugging percentage is 1.155.
  • Our OPS is 1.720.
  • We’ve had 14 players in games this year. Of them, only two don’t have home runs.
  • We’ve outscored opponents, 157-41.

Sheesh!

I don’t keep certain stats because they can be tough to decipher — such as pitching stats (although our top pitcher Glen is 7-0 and I am 1-0) and things like stolen bases because depending on who is doing things, sometimes a stolen base can be argued etc. So, we just run when the chance is there and go with it.

Now, there are some excellent individual things, too.

Our third-baseman Dylan leads the team in many categories, including at-bats (30), hits (20), triples (4), home runs (11), runs (20), RBIs (28), average (.667), on-base percentage (.677), slugging pecentage (2.1333) and OPS (2.811).

Luke, who comes when he can, actually has a higher percentage in batting, OBP, slugging and OPS, but he’s only made two of eight games, so Dylan leads otherwise.

The home run race is a good one, with Glen at 10 and one back of Dylan. Dean is third with 5.

Rookie Tim leads the team with five doubles and is hitting .609. Not a bad pickup for the squad. Another newcomer, who made his debut in the last game — Trent — homered and doubled!

Mike, who is the King of Power Bunting, leads the team with 10 walks.

Of our 14 players, nine of them are hitting over .500!

As for me, it’s respectable. In seven games, I’m 6-for-19 (.316) with a double, three walks, and four RBIs. I’m actually happy with the way I am swinging the bat this year. Many of my outs have been hard shots and, for some reason, I’m pulling the ball more than I normally do. That being said, the past two games I’ve had two hits in each, so I’m hoping the balls might start finding some holes on a regular basis!

The season continues tonight and hopefully we can continue our march. The first goal is to win the regular-season title (which we’ve never done in this league). The next goal is to win the whole thing for the second straight year.

There’s still a lot of ball to play and hopefully we can continue our pace!

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
