20 Days of Chill: Who are you? (Day 1)

January 4, 2016

So who are you?

Or who am I?

Does anybody know?

This question seems so simple, doesn’t it? I can see a non-blogger or non-writer answering this like a dating site profile page.

“I like long walks on the beach and moonlit boat rides …”

Many bloggers tend to be a little forward with a response to this question.

“I’m a mother/father. Son/Daughter. Husband/wife to ______. Friend. Own furbabies. Etc.”

Reading many about pages sound like they come from a template. I always like to look at them, but there’s a certain way many blogger pages are written.

So who am I?

I always answer it by saying I am me. I don’t describe myself too well. I find I don’t have the words to describe myself. I have good and bad parts, just like everybody else. I’m not perfect – and not even close. I have opinions, I have beliefs, and I have my own way of going about life.

Just the way I like it.

My interests don’t match a lot of people’s, but there are some that do match up.

For example, I like photography. Many people do, too. But it’s such a broad hobby that there are different interests etc. I get into things like board games and pro wrestling and geocaching and writing random things. There’s so much more, too. I probably have too many hobbies and interests.

The reality of who we are is hard to describe. Even those who can tell you “what” they are, are they really telling you who they are?

Probably not.

Humans are an amazing species. Everybody is unique and that’s what makes life so interesting. We’re not all the same type/size/race/sex etc.

And that’s OK by me.

As for who I am?

I’m me. And I like it that way.

I don’t think there’s such a thing as too many interests. Being able to shift focus between activities you enjoy in order to accommodate where you are, who you’re with, financial circumstances, your energy level on a given day, how much you feel like socializing, etc., seems like a good way of helping to make sure you have some fun every day. I guess the downside is that by spreading your time and energy across a wide range of activities it’s pretty much impossible to make it onto the geocaching finds leader board, to read the most books in a year, etc. As long as you’re okay with that, then who’s to say you have too many interests.

I used today’s 20 Days of Chill theme as a reason to update the “About Us” page on Out and About with the GeoKs. That’s probably not be what you had in mind, but it let me take part today while doing some blog housekeeping that’s long overdue.

PS – I’ve got the lyrics for “Who are You” (1978, The Who) going round and round in my head. My first ear worm of 2016! Thanks…I think?

I agree in regard to not having too many interests. Reality with me is I can drift in and out of interests, so it’s good to have plenty to choose from. I like being able to interact as well, so there are times I like some hobbies more than others. It’s definitely good to keep things in check so you can always stay grounded.

Well, you’ve pulled me out of the closet once again my friend. I’ve posted the first day and I’m here to stay for the duration.

I really liked your post. I can really relate to it. Sometimes I find myself wondering how people get to where they are. How did you become a geocacher, when the rest of you is so different than I am?

You and I have a lot of things in common, but as you note in your post, we have a lot of things that are really different, things that I can’t imagine doing and I’m sure there are things that I do that would probably cause you to shake your head too.

Thanks for the prod to get me back in the blogging saddle.

Glad to hear you’ll be joining us, Paul. I liked your posts last year. Hopefully this helps you on a good blogging path for 2016!

My stance on how people got where they are etc., comes from when I was in newspapers. I always believed every person has a story to tell — one just has to find it.

Believe me … I know people shake their head at things I do, so I can understand if you get it, too!

Harper got her first foul ball (as you can see she enjoyed!) and we also had the chance to grab a couple others and give them to some other dogs. All in all, four dogs walked away with balls!

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.

The theme for Week 3 of the 52-week video challenge was "Show your process of making something." Alas, I didn't get the time to do what I wanted to do, so I attacked something I filmed over the summer that I kept putting off.
