Messing with the blogging world since 2005

Really?

April 24, 2014

Do you ever sit back and shake your head at society?

We all know the world is a crazy place. And there are a lot of things that make things a little more wonky than others. But when the times are tough, take a step back and realize things could be way worse.

In these days, one needs to just look at the Internet and everything that is out there. A good dose of WTF can really go a long way.

Take, for example, this one teacher who thought making a kid clean up a urinal after the kid clogged it with paper towels. On one hand, it seems like a good lesson to teach this young lad. There should always be repercussions when doing something like this. Alas, you have to do it right. If not, in today’s society, you’ll be looking at things highly differently, like after being arrested.

Have you heard this story yet?

A teacher in Florida, nearly 60 years old, was charged with battery after forcing a 10-year-old to clean up his damage. The issue?

She made him do it with his bare hands.

Really?

Seriously.

What ever happened to rubber gloves and something to pull the stuff out with? Nah. Instead, our teacher – who had the right idea in having the kid clean it up – apparently didn’t think having the lad go through safety precautions was needed. The kid, of course, denied stuffing the towels in there.

If convicted, this lady could face upward of five years in the clink.

According to several online reports, the police report says the teacher made the boy use a clean paper towel to get the others out. How did she not think they would get wet? So when done, apparently his hands smelled like urine.

Yummy.

She was also accused of not providing the student with cleansing materials after. I’m not sure if that means he wasn’t allowed to wash his hands or if he didn’t get something else.

Now she’s looking at time. The idea was there. The execution of the plan, however, was way off.

No school for you!

This one comes from the file of not being able to make this stuff up. And it shows the lack of common sense that can happen sometimes, too.

Cancer sucks. I think we can all agree there. And when kids get it, it seems to be magnified and 100 times worse.

A 9-year-old girl in Colorado gave a pledge of solidarity with one of her friends – and 11-year-old girl who is battling a rare cancer – by shaving her head in support of her friend.

Apparently, the school decided the youngster had violated – get this – a dress code policy.

The school released a statement saying:

“Caprock Academy does have a detailed dress code policy, which was created to promote safety, uniformity, and a non-distracting environment for the school’s students. Under this policy, shaved heads are not permitted.”

Imagine that?

You have this brave 11 year old battling cancer, and a friend – two years younger – with the kindness to shave her own head to support her friend.

And you suspend her?

Really?

As you can imagine, this spread like wildfire. The school held a vote and allowed the girl to go back to school, via a 3-1 vote. I’m wondering about that person who voted against it. It makes me wonder if that person should be anywhere deciding the fates of children.

How is this not discovered?

Allow me to finish this installment of this feature with a bizarre mystery.

In Tennessee, the remains of 63-year-old twins were found at the house they shared. They were seated in easy chairs and seemingly died together – about three years ago. The remains seemed to show they’d been dead since 2011.

They weren’t the most social of people, according to reports.

They were discovered in late March, when a relative asked police to check on them. The relative had a key. It doesn’t appear to be foul play.

This whole thing, though, makes me shake my head.

How did family members never figure this out? Nobody could call? Visit? Neighbors said they hadn’t seen the twins in years. A family member requested a welfare check in 2011, but nothing seemed out of place, thus not leading to breaking into the house.

Their lawn remained mowed, by neighbors or somebody else.

Apparently, authorities can’t find any relatives. Kind of crazy.

But this isn’t the only mystery. There’s one in Michigan, too, where the mummified body of a lady was found in her jeep, which was parked in her garage.

Get this, though – it’s been figured she’d been dead since 2008 or 2009. She had enough money in her accounts to keep paying bills all those time as they were automatic payments. Neighbors kept up mowing the lawn. But nobody ever found her.

Same idea here, too. How in the name of holy hell was she not discovered sooner? No family or friends? One family member is all of a sudden preaching they need answers (a Facebook page). You need them now? What about since 2009?

And now the niece has a Facebook page called “Mummifed in Michigan.”

Really?

Maybe we now know why this lady stayed away from family.

It’s a crazy to think somebody could die and not be discovered for years. And then, once discovered… family members show their faces demanding answers.

Make you wonder.

Society… you never cease to amaze me.

People never seem to amaze me. In the old days before computers and auto payments people had to pay in person or by mail. People would notice if they never showed up. Also, it seems as if many families are not as close as they once were. Sad.

I don’t hold a lot of hope for our society in general, due to stories like this and others. Common sense isn’t very common, and the more I read about things like this, the more I like thinking about getting a cabin in the wilderness when I retire, to stay away from as many idiots as possible.

I know I’ll be OK, but I always worry about the stray idiot who’ll do something stupid and accidentally take me out in the process.

North of the border this weekend to get away and hit a few caching events and geocache. Dinner tonight was at @harpersburgers, especially with outdoor seating and dog friendly! @harper_dublin got to enjoy a little of my #burger, of course. And, yes, I got poutine, duh! Great service and great food! Went back later for a spiked shake. This one was a Malibu Colada (malibu rum, dark rum, vanilla ice cream, and pineapple juice) … yum!

Good times! Looking forward to another event and caches on Saturday before heading home!

I think Harper approves.

It’s especially nice in the morning when college isn’t in session as it’s quiet and @harper_dublin can sniff and explore her surroundings (if in session, she will want to stop and meet every student etc.). I know a lot of people local walk the campus, and it’s really nice that we have something like this in our community to be able to do so.

A video looking at my first year and a half of owning a golden retriever, my first dog. It's had its ups and downs, but I've truly loved the ride and look forward to the future.

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.
