It’s that time again!
And this time, I’m hoping for a better turnout.
When I was at the Vibram Open over Labor Day weekend, Nite Ize had a booth set up. Darren, of course, had been chatting with David, the salesperson who was there. After I chatted for a bit, I mentioned I was starting to do contests and he graciously donated a few items (the others will be given away down the line).
But this time, it’s the Nite Ize FlashFlight — an ultimate frisbee-style flying disc with an LED light in it. That means you can easily throw this at night.
How cool is that?
This is bigger than a normal frisbee or disc golf disc. It has a pretty wide rim, but no doubt could provide hours of fun. On the Nite Ize website, the disc retails for $24.99! This isn’t a cheapo disc, that’s for sure.
The construction on it is solid. Darren has one, so I have thrown them before and they are easy to throw and a whole heap of fun in the dark. It’s a different way to do disc golf, that’s for sure. (I probably should have purchased one myself, just to have. But that’s OK… maybe in the future! Plus, I got one of the Vibram Open LED mini discs for myself!)
Anyway, this contest is to bring you back to your youth.
Do you remember all those games at night you played as a kid during the summer? With no school and carefree fun? Kick the can. Ding-dong-ditch. Ghost in the Graveyard. And so many more.
Our town was so quiet and peaceful in the summer. At nights, most parents would let us roam a little later than normal. And in our neighborhood, there were a whole heap of kids.
We played all sorts of games. They ranged from the ones above to kiss tag to night baseball with flashlights and playing under streetlights or in the parking lot of a local drug store.
So go back to your youth.
What I require you to do for this contest is to think back to those games. What was your favorite? In the game, what were the rules and what did you have to do? And why was it your favorite?
Tell me and have fun with it!
This contest will, again, be a random draw for the winner. I find it’s the best way to decide the winner in things like this.
The winner receives the ultimate disc!
AND… if this contest gets 12 or more individuals entering, I’ll give a second-place prize, too. (That means 12 different people, not just 12 total entries as people can earn multiple entries). I will make the second-place prize the Nite Ize Clip, a cool little light that you can attach to a zipper or something else. (Note: The one I have is red, but I can’t seem to figure out how to turn it on to see it all glow up. I don’t want to detach it from its packaging).
So have fun. Tell your friends to enter. The more the merrier! If I start getting larger turnouts for these contests, I’ll figure more ways to give away second-place prizes.
The deadline for this is at 12:01 a.m. (Eastern) Sunday Oct. 2. Make sure you enter before then!
I’d also like to especially thank David for donating these products for the giveaway. I hope some people will be interested enough in maybe getting some other things off their website!
The contest: Night games.
How to win: You must post a comment on this post telling me about your favorite summer-time night game you played as a kid. Explain the game, what the rules were and why it’s your favorite.
Other ways to enter: You have to first do the main contest entry. After doing that, you can earn additional entries by doing the following (a person can do each one, but only once each. So you can earn a total of five entries into the contest.):
- Like A ‘lil HooHaa on Facebook (on the right side of the blog at the top of the page. If you have already liked the blog, let me know and I can give an entry that way, too).
- Write a post on your blog about this contest (make sure you let me know!)

OOO! We LOVED night games in our neighborhood. Lots of space and a large span of yards, and neighbors who didn’t mind us in theirs. M favorite game by far was Sardines. One person is “it” and they go hide. Everyone else then separates and goes of in search for the sardine. If you find the sardine, you become one and hide with them. The last person to find the sardines loses!
Erika – I had never heard of sardines. Sounds a lot like our kick the can, to an extent. But in kick the can, everyone hid and one person went looking. When they found someone, they’d run back to the coffee can, hold it down and say “Tap, tap tap on so-and-so behind the bush in Smith’s yard.” That person was then captured and came and sat on the porch. The captured people could be freed if someone who had been hiding came and “kicked the can” before the person seeking could find everyone. Gave us hours of fun!
I tweeted!
I liked your blog on FB.
I loved that the kids would all run off and play night games! Gave the adults some peace and quiet, lol!! You could hear the kids running, laughing and yelling…somewhere else!
My favorite was just plain old hide & seek. It became more fun in the dark. More mysterious, harder to seek, more exciting to hide. Of course you’d wear all dark clothes, and have permission to be out “after the street lights came on”.
Fitzy – Hide and seek, I think was always a favorite of kids in the dark. Definitely gave it more mystery. Thanks for stopping by and entering!
I don’t know that there was anything better than a good game of nighttime Hide-and-Seek. We had a good amount of vacant space to play in with plenty of places to hide. About the only rule we had was to stay within the boundaries of the field.
Mike – Night time hide and seek was always fun. Our version of that was kick the can. Boundaries, especially at night, is a good rule! Thanks for entering!
Flashlight tag. Basically one person was “it” and had the flashlight, while the others hid. As the hiders got “tagged” with the flashlight they were out. Last person tagged was it then.
Chuck — Flashlight tag… good one indeed! Thanks for the entry!
I lived on the end of a dead-end street, with a very large yard that stretched up a hill and was surrounded by weeds and woods. Regularly, the neighborhood kids would gather at our house for games and activities. We played kickball in the street and we played tag in the yard. Night time was particularly fun– though a bit treacherous with all the hills and branches and buildings and the swing set and the clothes lines.. and, well, you get the picture. My favorite game to play at night in our yard was a gave of Keep-Away with my dog, Midnight. She would have a large stick… too big for her, actually… that she would drag along the ground. The rest of us, 3-8 kids, would try to get the stick away from her. Midnight was a black lab/golden retriever mix, all black except for a white dot on her chest. In the night, she would all but disappear. So there we would be, trying to track her location and approach by the sound of her collar, her feet on the grass, or the sound of the stick dragging and bumping along. When she got close, you would try to jump on that stick while she nimbly dodged away and took off– swallowed up by the darkness. The true contest was between who would get tired first– us or Midnight. If we could keep her running, she would start to slow down and we had a better chance. Sometimes, when we thought she was tired, we would go after the stick only to discover that she was faking it… and she would take off like a cannonball. You could see the laughter in her eyes before she was gone again.
Craig — an interesting game at night, indeed. Thanks for the entry!
