I can picture this theme already.
It might be filled with wonderful and warm spots. If any winter weather is involved, I can see some great ski centers or winter wonderlands.
But a winter vacation destination?
I want to go to Barrow, Alaska.
Barrow is the northernmost city in the United States and has a population of a bit more than 4,000.
There’s no real reason why I have wanted to visit this place — especially in the winter. But for some reason, I want to.
I mean, just look at this weather advisory for the Northern Arctic Coast … for tonight (as I write this):
Issuing Office: Fairbanks
3:00pm AKST, Mon Jan 9
… SIGNIFICANT COLD SPELL COMING TO THE ARCTIC SLOPE… MOST COASTAL AREAS WILL SEE 25 TO 40 BELOW LOW TEMPERATURES LATER THIS WEEK THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK, WHILE INLAND AREAS WILL BE AROUND 50 BELOW. TEMPERATURES WILL COOL ACROSS THE ARCTIC SLOPE THIS WEEK WITH COLD SETTLING IN OVER THE AREA LATE IN THE WEEK. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES WILL BE INLAND ON THE ARCTIC PLAIN. A HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL DEVELOP OVER SIBERIA AND PERSIST, WHICH WILL DRAG COLD AIR OUT OF THE HIGH ARCTIC OVER THE AREA. FOR THE LATEST FORECASTS GO TO WEATHER.GOV/FAIRBANKS
Yes, you are reading that correct. It’s that cold.
Who the hell would want to go there?
No reason, once again. It’s a small community. It’s a place that isn’t easy to get to. It’s not like it’s a booming tourist getaway. But there’s something about it. Something that draws me wanting to be there.
Photos maybe? The community looks cool and unique. I’m sure the trip to get there would be wild. Blog posts.
Or maybe just to say I was there. Find a few geocaches (there are five within 10 miles, including a virtual) and just experience something different.
And for whatever reason, I feel like if I am going I almost have to do it in the winter. But, I’ll be honest — I’d do it at any time. It’s on my bucket lists of places to go and maybe it will happen at some point!
