A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!
Goal completed: Host 10 events (geocaching)
Date completed: February 29, 2016
Number: 8
Description: Though I don’t get out geocaching as much as I used to, I still love the events. It’s a great way to meet people, chat about the hobby, and enjoy a day. I thought hosting 10 would be a good goal.
Why I wanted to do it: The social aspect of geocaching really is fun. You have the chance to meet so many different people from all walks of life. There are different personalities, and so many nationalities represented. If you get to the major events, it’s truly amazing. Our area has gone through ups and downs with geocaching, so it’s always nice to have an event and give people a chance to gather, chat, eat, and whatever else.
How I did it: Basically, I just worked on and submitted 10 events. Some of them, others helped. Some were basic events where I did all the legwork. Some of the events required more pre-work (such as renting the place and/or getting it set up where we’d be etc.), while others were basically getting the date, the coordinates, and submitting.
Events are so different, yet can often be the same. For me, though, it’s always a lot of fun.
Below are the dates/names of each event I’ve hosted since this project started, along with the attended amount of people (as of this writing) in parentheses.

About P.J.’s Day Zero Project: Day Zero is a project where people come up with 101 things to do over 1001 days. I started the project on August 1, 2014 with an anticipated finish date of April 28, 2017. Goals will not be revealed until they are completed. A private list is at the Day Zero website and the list will be made public upon completion of the project. It’s my thoughts that if things are kept private, should I not do them, change or find a way around it, I’d only be cheating myself.
I decided last year to start creating events. I actually have a goal that I’d like to keep a 1% hide to find ratio for myself (1 hide for every 100 caches found). I found over time though, that with this goal, I wasn’t really hiding quality caches. So I decided to post some events. They qualify as a hide, and then I can keep my 1% ratio intact. I know it’s a little creative bookkeeping, so to speak, but it works for what I’m doing. With the events, it now allows me to hide more creative, well thought out caches, instead of your every day LPC type of cache.
My 12th Wake up and Smell the Coffee event happens this Saturday. I host a morning coffee event on the first Saturday of the month at different coffee venues around our area. I’ve doubled a couple of places up, but each month, I try to make it in a different part of our area to entice people to come out.
It serves a second purpose besides my creative bookkeeping. It also gets together people in the morning on a Saturday who might likely hook up for a day of caching. I already have a hiking partner set up for nice hike this Saturday. Two goals accomplished as one.
Congratulations on getting another goal off of this list completed.

I love hosting events. I think it’s a great way to get people together, especially with a common hobby etc. I’d love to try and keep a good hide ratio, but sometimes it’s hard. I have a goal of getting a bunch more hidden this year, so hopefully I will do so. I like doing better hides, too, so I don’t like to rush them out. I always have fun with my events, too. I try to come up with creative logs (for most) and often have themes.
If I ever get out to California, I’ll hope to be able to come to one of your events!
