Day Zero Project

Day Zero Project: Completed No. 55

March 6, 2011

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Have a photo exhibit of some sort somewhere.

Date completed: March 6, 2011.

Number: 55  (remember, these goals will not all be done in order. It’s a random list where the numbers actually are).

Description: I’ve always wanted to have some of my photos shown somewhere. No matter if it’s a show, an exhibit, a sale — whatever. The opportunity came to me when I was offered a spot at the local cafe. Cross Roads Cafe shows off something different each month. It’s my hope to sell a few photos and see if there’s any feedback on these images that I’ve chosen.

Why I wanted to do it: Something different. A way to find out if my photos can sell at all or if they make a good display. I have some bigger ones and some smaller ones and I think the images are affordable, yet don’t seem to be low balled.

How I did it: I know the owner of the cafe and was offered a month in 2011. Once I picked it, I started to choose images. I have about 25 or so photos hanging, mostly all matted. I have a couple of metal prints, too. The sizes of the photos are 5X7, 8X10 and 8X12. There are two 11X14 metal prints, too. Things were set up today, so it will be interesting to see how it all comes out. I’m glad I had the chance to do it.

About P.J.’s Day Zero Project: Day Zero is a project where people come up with 101 things to do over 1001 days. I started the project on Oct. 10, 2010 with an anticipated finish date of July 8, 2013. Goals will not be revealed until they are completed. A private list is at the Day Zero website and the list will be made public upon completion of the project. It’s my thoughts that if things are kept private, should I not do them, change or find a way around it, I’d only be cheating myself.

Fireworks over Oneonta

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Photograph fireworks.

Date completed: Dec. 31, 2010.

Number: 81  (remember, these goals will not all be done in order. It’s a random list where the numbers actually are).

Description: I’ve only done it a time or two before, but I have looked at many different photos of fireworks. I really love the look of it and know I have to work on it a little bit. I put this on there figuring it would force me to make sure I got out and did it. I got that chance New Year’s Eve when Oneonta hosted its First Night. I set up in the park and shot away, but I didn’t have a lot of time as Oneonta fireworks never seem to last too long. Nevertheless, I got some pretty decent shots.

Why I wanted to do it: Mainly to push my photography a bit more. Fireworks require some patience and setup, so I wanted to work on that.

How I did it: I hung out in Oneonta that night for the First Night celebration. A couple of us watched some of the acts and then headed to the park for the fireworks. I set up looking for a good spot. I had a decent spot, but still battled a little with some things. In the end, I got a handful of shots I really liked, which was good for me. I’ll be looking to shoot fireworks again sometime.

More of my photos from First Night, which include more fireworks, can be seen here.

Day Zero Project: Completed No. 11

March 1, 2011

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: No fast food for a month.

Date completed: Feb. 28, 2011.

Number: 11  (remember, these goals will not all be done in order. It’s a random list where the numbers actually are).

Description: I’ve never been one of those people who has eaten a ton of fast food, but I want to wipe it out of my diet as much as possible. So, I decided I’d do it for a month. This includes the major chains for fast food — Burger Kind, McD’s, Arby’s, Wendy’s, Long John Silver, Taco Bell etc. This doesn’t include places like Quizno’s and Subway etc.

Why I wanted to do it: Why not? Have you seen some of the calorie counts for some of this food? Ouch! An example is Wendy’s double with everything and cheese. It’s ranked No. 14 on the Worst Burgers list via Eat This, Not That on Men’s Health. What’s it have? 700 calories. 40 grams of fat. 1,440 mg of sodium! WOW!

It gets worse.

No. 3 on that list is Burger King’s Triple Whopper with cheese and mayo. How about these numbers … 1,250 calories, 84 grams of fat and 1,600 mg of sodium.

Yeah, no thanks.

How I did it: I actually have it in my mind that I want to do this for a few months, if not longer. The only thing I sometimes miss is a trip to Arby’s or Taco Bell. The other places, I don’t miss … though some of the stuff is so tasty (McD’s fries). I just stopped going to these places. Grabbed a salad at Quizno’s. Went to a diner or something instead. Tried to find healthier options. I actually started this in mid-January, but started “counting” in February. I’ll keep it going as long as I can, however.

Day Zero Project: Completed No. 66

February 10, 2011

A Day Zero Project goal of P.J.’s has been completed!

Goal completed: Write an e-mail to myself through futureme.org to be delivered the final day of this challenge.

Date completed: Feb. 4, 2011.

Number: 66  (remember, these goals will not all be done in order. It’s a random list where the numbers actually are).

Description: The idea is to write myself a letter through the website futureme.org and have it sent on the final day of this challenge. I wrote about my life as of today, a few things that happened in the world and some bits of advice to myself.

Why I wanted to do it: What an interesting way to see what I was today. The idea, simply enough, is to see how much I’ve grown and what I’ve done with myself since writing the letter. Also, with the reality that I’ll likely forget about it, it will be a neat surprise when it shows up in my e-mail the final day of the project. Hopefully I’ll be living in some posh place overlooking something wonderful and sitting on a mound of money. Hey, a guy can dream, can’t he?

How I did it: Simple. I went to the website, signed up, wrote the letter and sent it. Give it a try. Maybe you can get yourself a surprise, too!

Snowshoeing adventure

February 8, 2011

Just after I started my Day Zero Project, I read something on snowshoeing. I put it on my list with the idea that maybe I could figure a way to do it sometime over the next two-plus years. I didn’t own any shoes and wasn’t sure about spending money on them until I had the opportunity to do it. A Catch-22 of sorts. Still, I added it to the list with the hopes of eventually being able to cross this one off the list.

I was in L.L. Bean a bit before Christmas and saw something about their “Outdoor Adventures.” I put that in the back of my head as something that seemed like it would be a fun afternoon. Alas, I didn’t live in Maine, so that made it hard, right?

Nope.

See, the L.L. Bean in Albany holds some of these Outdoor Adventures. Not all (unfortunately), but some. Again, I put that in the back of my head and went along my way.

Sometime in early January, I was in L.L. Bean again and picked up a sheet showing some of the details. Soon after, my sister-in-law showed me her snowshoes and she was taking my brother shoeing for the first time. At that point, I had looked into the Outdoor Adventure and soon signed up for the upcoming Saturday. Darren and I headed up to check it out.

The day came and we headed to Albany. You meet at the store and they shuttle you to a nearby park. They only allow 14 people on the adventure, so that’s kind of cool. Our group had nine, but we ended up being split up as there were a few retired people who went with one guide and the two of us and four ladies from the University at Albany. We were taught about the shoes and off we went. We did a loop of about a mile and it was a nice stroll.

Alas, because we were done before the other group, we ended up doing a different loop. Looking back, it might have been smart to skip that final 1.5-mile loop because it was tough. My right foot was hurting from the shoe (apparently these are the cheaper ones and the bindings aren’t that great) and the 36-inch shoes I was wearing were a bit too long for my liking.

In the end, it was an incredible workout. My pedometer showed I had burned more than 500 calories on the jaunt.

I had thought about purchasing a pair of shoes that day, but L.L. Bean didn’t have the ones I would want, so I decided against it. For the record, I tried a pair of Darren’s a week later — 30-inch shoes — and I liked the bindings. I’m hoping I can find a pair like these and I’ll probably get a pair as it is a heck of a cardio workout and it’s a nice way to stay outdoors in the winter. You work up one heck of a sweat, I’ll tell you that. Make sure you layer up if going out to do it.

I did get the chance to take several photos during the day and you can see them on my Flickr account. Click the photo below to go directly to the set from that day.

Overall, it was a great day. And it might be a way, too, to start geocaching a bit more in the winter. I’m going to continue my search for some affordable shoes with bindings I like. There are some great parks in this area with awesome trails that would be good for snowshoeing. Hopefully, I’ll get the chance to explore them a bit more.

More later!

Harper got her first foul ball (as you can see she enjoyed!) and we also had the chance to grab a couple others and give them to some other dogs. All in all, four dogs walked away with balls!

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.

The theme for Week 3 of the 52-week video challenge was "Show your process of making something." Alas, I didn't get the time to do what I wanted to do, so I attacked something I filmed over the summer that I kept putting off.
