30 Days of Writing: Roast or toast another blogger (24/30)

June 24, 2012

This post is written in conjunction with the 30 Days of Writing, a blog challenge devised by Nicky and Mike at “We Work For Cheese.” I’ll be participating throughout the month of June. If interested, you can see my post with the details of the challenge.

Please note that some of these posts will be serious, some will be normal, and some will be an attempt at humor.

This actually was quite the tough topic.

It’s not that I don’t know any bloggers to toast or roast. It’s more that I don’t want to single anyone out. There are many bloggers I read on a normal or semi-normal basis. And there are some who I’ve found during this challenge that I will continue to read well beyond the end of this 30-day craze.

With the risk of missing some people, I’m just going to basically give a speech and try and include some of my favorites. If you’re not listed, it doesn’t mean I don’t read you… it just means that I probably forgot (after all, getting many blogs in this post will be tough!)

****

I could start by noting about this damn challenge. A 30-day blogging challenge where one has to write about certain off-the-wall topics. Yes, it’s the brain trust of Nicky and Mike over at We Work for Cheese. It would be easy to roast them. From their devotion to cheese to being Canadian. Easy roasting, no? Alas, I have an affinity for cheese and for Canada, so not so easy, eh?

And Nicky, believe me, my next trip to Montreal, I’m cashing in on your offer of free poutine!

Alas, by stumbling upon this challenge, I also had the chance to find many new and intriguing bloggers. And it seems bloggers of all ages, too, which is excellent. On top of that, they are from all over.

Such as Babs, who is on the other side of the pond. She’s not the only blogger I read from the UK, either — a fellow geocacher, Sarah, is also from that side of the world. It’s probably good that I am reading their blogs as I’m sure they have accents! It’s always cool to think about what somebody would sound like when you only see them in the Blogging world.

This challenge has led me to blogs like Linda, Wendy, Barb, Linda M, Katherine, Lauren and Laughing Mom, who have all sown creativity and different styles of writing that I really have enjoyed. Whether tales of life, poems or whatever else, they have consistently made me look forward to visiting their blogs.

Shawn has made me laugh — more than once — during this challenge. And laughter is something I truly love, so it’s always a bonus.

And I can’t forget Nonameddufus, who may call himself a dufus, but has humor, excellent stories and a love of hot dogs (albeit microwaved, but still…) and is someone I truly look forward to reading each day.

There are others — not involved in this challenge — who I try to read as often as possible. From geocachers such as GeoKs, to “everyday life” bloggers such as Naked Girl in a Dress (get your mind out of the gutter…) and Christelle, to a former co-worker who now has a “foodie” blog as Scratch Made Wife, my blog roll is a dynamic mixture of tastes, styles and posting frequency. I am happy to be able to read so many excellent blogs.

And Michael leads the fight for peanut butter against Nutella, so he’s obviously a worthy read. Lady in Red has helped that fight. We just need to make sure she doesn’t stray off course in the quest to crush Rusty’s beloved Nutella.

I had to save the “best” for last, however. See, I couldn’t go the whole thing without a true roast.

Over the years, I’ve gotten to know other sports writers and such through the Internet. Mainly through a message board (of which I am no longer and active participant). It’s through there where I first met Jerry. (Note I’ve met him several times now at events such as the Hall of Fame Inductions and have since grown to call him a good friend … he even mentioned me in his acknowledgments at the end of his most recent book… cheap plug! Go look at it and buy it if you are a baseball fan. It’s a great read!)

But about the blogging part…

See, for a long time, I used to tell Jerry to read my blog. But he wasn’t the biggest of blogging people. He’d usually respond to me something along these lines:

Me: Hey man, I had an interesting post at my blog today. You should check it out.

Jerry: BLOOOOOOOOOOGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGS!!!

And that would be it.

A funny thing happened on the way to the blogging world…

See, Jerry became a blogger.

Now, it’s one thing to start a blog. Whether it be about books, sports, real life or whatever. Maybe a niche. Well, Jerry has hit the niche. He blogs about Hofstra basketball. (His three readers will confirm it). Sometimes, when other sports at Hofstra are doing well, he’ll blog about them, too.

Despite his blogging of a school that many people scratch their head at and say “Who?” Jerry has become a blogger. The banter of “Sofstra” and “No football” are inside jokes that always make me chuckle.

In the end, though, Jerry truly runs a solid blog and is something that fans of alumni of Hofstra should be happy to have. I won’t lie that I don’t read it every day (I don’t have connection to Hofstra), but I check it out and there are, at times, posts that truly engage me. His style is excellent and the way he relates things is strong so even those who aren’t connected to the school can read it without thinking it’s been done by some fan boy.

I would encourage people who enjoy good writing to check his blog out. The only bit of advice I would give is if you don;t want millions of updates about Hofstra and CAA basketball, don’t follow him on Twitter (Hi, Jerry!)

For those I left out of this post, accept my apologies. I’ll still be reading!

30 Days of Writing: Hanging out in the cemetery (16/30)

June 16, 2012

Cemeteries — especially old ones — can be amazing places for research, photography or other reasons. And all the while, you can pay respects to those who went before us.

This one is a little of everything!

Cemeteries.

Many look at cemeteries as a sad place. One where many people who have passed through life are buried.

Did you know, back when, cemeteries were places of celebration? People would picnic in cemeteries and town events would be held there. And it’s how it should be. When you go to a cemetery, you can celebrate those who have already left us. Sure, it can be sad. But it can also be a good place — one where you remember the good times.

I was brought to this old cemetery through geocaching. It was an overgrown cemetery with some historical people and I never would have found it without the game.

But man cemeteries seemed to be long forgotten. The ones that aren’t active anymore and have the old and amazing tombstones. Hundreds of years have passed for some of these cemeteries and, unless they were famous, there are many people buried throughout the world who likely have nobody who visits their graves anymore.

I have a lot of hobbies in which I participate. One of them is based around cemeteries, the other sometimes involves cemeteries.

The first is with the website Find A Grave.

Many people use this site to help with research about family or whatever else. The site has a large database of cemeteries and photos. What I do, is when local cemeteries get requests for photos of graves, I like to try and get out and go get them for the people seeking the photos. It’s actually been a little while since I’ve done it as my other hobbies have distracted from this one.

But, I love this one because when you’re searching for the headstones, you can learn about things. You can see the stones and different aspects of the burial grounds.

My other hobby in which cemeteries sometimes appear is geocaching.

For those who don’t know, geocaching is a technology-based treasure hunt, using a GPS.

From Geocaching.com:

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

Geocachers will hide caches all over. In fact, there are nearly 1,800,000 active caches placed around the world. And there are more than 5 million geocachers playing the game.

But, back to cemeteries.

Cachers like to find old cemeteries and hide caches near them. Often, geocachers will do research about these long-forgotten cemeteries and take you there for a certain reason. Maybe because there’s people buried there who fought in the Revolutionary War. Or a famous athlete is buried there. Or someone else. I’ve learned a lot in cemeteries through geocaching and for that, I’m thankful.

Arlington National Cemetery is a place where you can lose yourself in the history and be moved by everything this cemetery stands for.

Finally, cemeteries can be some of the most powerful places to visit.

Take for example Arlington National Cemetery.

I don’t know how many of you have visited there, but during a trip to visit friends in Washington D.C. last year, I spent a combined six or so hours in Arlington National spaced out over two days. From the changing of the guard to staring at all the headstones, it was one of the moving things I’ve ever seen. To know how many of these people have given their life for the United States is something that, for those of us who are Americans, should be thankful for.

Cemeteries, though places where people are buried when life on Earth ends, are not places to be afraid of, rather places to remember and honor those who have gone.

Take a walk through a local old cemetery and look at the headstones. Even if it’s people you might not know, be related to or know anything about, you can still pay respects or at least look around and know that you might be one of the only people to see these names over a given time.

30 Days of Writing: The other one (13/30)

June 13, 2012

A disc rattles the chains.

This one is a normal blog post!

The other one?

Another one of those crazy topics that seem to really work people over and make no sense!

It seems to me that when Nicky and Mike were coming up with ideas for this blogging challenge, they had a little too much with the Guinness cheese and that might have really messed with their minds.

So now they have this topic about “The other one?”

<sigh>

I’m sure this won’t be the last time over the next 17 days that I will shake my head in wonderment on how I got myself into this challenge and wonder what the hell I was thinking, but I digress.

I guess I’ll use this space as a bit of a way to show something else.

My "other one."

I have another blog.

Yes, the other one. It’s a niche blog, however. I’ve had this blog since 2005 — in a few different forms. It’s been like this (WordPress) for several years. I’ve also had it as part of a discussion forum I used to have and on Blogger, before moving permanently to this home.

My main domain name — hoohaa.com — now directs to this blog. (Looking back, it probably would have made more sense just to use the hoohaa.com domain as the blog, but I wasn’t thinking!) I love this blog and try and work at it as much as I can.

But, the reality is, this is a personal blog. I do things like this blog challenge or things going on in my world or things that I love to do.

At the end of 2011, I had a bigger idea. I wanted to do more with disc golf.

For those who don’t know what disc golf is, it’s Frisbee golf. You use a disc and throw it at above-ground targets, usually a basket and chains. It’s played like golf. The thing with the game is it’s a great way to get outdoors with friends and family and have some fun. It can get competitive, too, with tournaments and a pro tour, but in the overall scheme of things, it’s fun.

I have blogged a bit about disc golf. In fact, the most page views I received in one day was disc golf related.

Searching for several months for disc golf blogs showed me there wasn’t any specific ones that were updated regularly and such. So, I thought about it. I talked to some friends. I talked to some people in the disc golf world. I decided to start a disc golf blog.

We launched Rattling Chains in early March.

The site is really something. We have a good following. We’ll have contests to give away discs and other things. We try and have entertaining and creative content. There are four of us who contribute to the site on a regular basis. We have a couple of others who contribute when they can and we’re working on having a few more.

The hits aren’t amazing or anything, but the site continues to grow and get more popular. We’ve had some good feedback, so that’s been good.

I have strong feelings for both of these blogs. I’m more emotionally invested in this one because it’s where I can kind of be me — and it’s my own personal space on the web. At Rattling Chains, it’s a place for me to still write in a journalistic way, do some editing, do some “boss” things and kind of have my finger still in sports writing.

Go visit!

Also, it has been a good thing to see what it’s like to build a niche blog. We don’t make money and we’re not sure we ever will. It’s given us full independence to voice opinions, give reviews and write stories we feel will be entertaining and/or compelling for disc golfers to read.

Both blogs are spare time sort of things. They aren’t jobs. And what I like about that is when the real world takes over at times, you can kind of move around with the blogs.

This was my first, though.

And Rattling Chains is my “other one.”

Both of them are quite special in their own way and I hope readers enjoy each one.

Just what I needed — another blog challenge

May 31, 2012

If I need inspiration during this blog challenge, Danny Larusso should provide it!

I think I might be insane to even think about doing another challenge.

I’m already trying to continue my Project 366 and HooHaa 52 photo projects. On top of that, I have the HooHaa Holga Challenge I am dealing with. Add that in with my job search and dealing with two blogs that are not money generating, playing softball, fitting in some geocaching, a round or two of disc golf and other outdoorsy things and one might think I’m nuts.

But this was a little too interesting to pass up.

As I noted yesterday, I have been searching for some new blogs to read. I wanted some entertaining ones. That search brought me to We Work For Cheese.

The first post I saw was titled “The Post You’ll Wish You Never Read.”

Fact: The headline of that post is as true as can be.

It’s not that I don’t like the blog — I do. In fact, I’ll be trying to make it part of my normal blog reading. But that post — that evil post — is the one about this challenge.

I’ve never been much into blog challenges or “quick topics,” and by quick topics, I mean those blog posts where you are tagged by other bloggers and need to fill out some sort of questionnaire. Those might help me fill days at some point, though, so I should look into them.

Anyway, back to this post I wish I had never read…

See, the challenge is simple. Blog every day for 30 straight days, starting Friday (June 1). I thought to myself, heck, I’ve done that before and more than once. But, you see, this has a catch — the topics are pre-determined.

And some of ’em aren’t easy.

Here’s the list:

  • Day 1: Cheese
  • Day 2: A roadblock
  • Day 3: They played my song
  • Day 4: Behind the wheel
  • Day 5: Spiders
  • Day 6: Pressure
  • Day 7: Excess
  • Day 8: Best friend
  • Day 9: Magic carpet
  • Day 10: The babysitter
  • Day 11: A sense of accomplishment
  • Day 12: In the kitchen
  • Day 13: The other one
  • Day 14: The short hairs
  • Day 15: First place
  • Day 16: Hanging out in the cemetery
  • Day 17: The awkwardness of the common banana
  • Day 18: Setting sail
  • Day 19: Camels
  • Day 20: Going solo
  • Day 21: Favors I’d ask of Satan
  • Day 22: Like there’s no tomorrow
  • Day 23: Stiletto heels
  • Day 24: Roast or toast another blogger
  • Day 25: Worst Christmas ever
  • Day 26: An intervention
  • Day 27: Side of the road
  • Day 28: The turning point
  • Day 29: Breaking the rules
  • Day 30: It could have been worse

Now, realize this — there aren’t any rules.

That means there’s no word requirements. The post can be a photo or as short as one word. Maybe I will write a bajillion words. It’s all good (though, if I wrote a bajillion words, I don’t think somebody would read it).

The only catch is that the blog owner, Nicky, has forewarned that she will make fun of participants in their comments, should the need arise. That’s OK though, because comments are comments, no? And we all like getting comments!

So, I’m going to give this a go. Realize that I might write some fiction and I might mix some other things in with these (see Earl). I’ve actually though about making Earl a major part of this blog challenge, but I’m going to basically do this all on the fly as I go along. So who knows.

All I know is I think I’m crazy.

The even crazier part? There are times when there will be more than one post per day. See, I don’t plan on axing some of my regular features (Snapshot Saturday etc.), though I might try and mix a few of them.

I have a few hopes for what I can gain from this challenge:

  • That I find some more excellent blogs to read on a regular basis;
  • Have fun;
  • Finish the challenge;
  • And to not hate cheese by the end of the challenge.

If you are a blogger, you still have a chance to check out the challenge and sign up before things get rolling June 1.

Or, if you’re smart, you might not read that post.

If you do, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Notes from my Noodle: April 4 edition

April 4, 2012

As many of you know, I’ve been on Flickr for several years. I use it as a spot to share my photos and such. Flickr has this thing called “Explore.” Basically, it’s the top photos of the day as determined by Flickr’s secret algorithm. Nobody seems to know how it works. But there are some amazing photos on there, as well as many not-so-great ones.

One thing I’ve always notices is the people seem get out and comment a lot, driving traffic to their photos.

Though I try and search Flickr and comment as much as possible, it’s not a daily habit.

So color me shocked when I got a comment on one of my recent images from someone saying they had viewed the image on Explore. Score! I have wanted to get on Explore for a long time — and thought I had photos that would make it there before — but it was this one that did.

Waffle House!

It got to No. 358. But later when I checked, it had dropped off. Flickr giveth and Flickr taketh away. No biggie. I got to Explore. So that’s cool enough.

On a side note, I did tweet that I got on it and gave the ol’ @ to the Waffle House and the Waffle House twitter guy/gal re-tweeted me, so I have that going for me. Which is nice.

The algorithm on Flickr is pretty silly, anyway. But I got Explored. Can’t take it away, buddy!

****

I’ve received a postcard through Postcrossing a while back. I just noticed it on the desk and that I hadn’t registered it.

I should probably do that, eh?

****

This two blog thing is tough!

I love this blog, I really do. And I’ll never give it up. But it’s been tough to come up with ideas when I’ve been pushing myself to make sure the other blog (Rattling Chains) is really up and running.

We have several people now writing with us, including 2009 World Champion Avery Jenkins and two others with journalism backgrounds. We’re taking it seriously over there in hopes of making a daily destination for disc golfers.

We’ve worked to make it a really sweet site with great content and a solid look. I’m trying to get it on the Internet news sources, too, in hopes of driving some traffic.

If you’re a disc golfer — or are interested in the game — peek at it over there and see what you think!

****

The fantasy baseball league I am in is drafting tonight.

An auction draft, online.

This should prove to be interesting. A lot of interesting names were left off keeper lists, so I imagine it should be pretty wild to see where people go with their teams.

****

Baseball season opens tonight. Well, it kind of already did with the Mariners and Athletics playing a pair in Japan a week or so ago.

But tonight is the official opening night.

Marlins (blech) vs. Cardinals (double blech).

The Phils open tomorrow. That’s when I’ll get pumped. The good news is — baseball is back!

Fundraiser: I am, again, trying to raise money for the Relay For Life. If you donate to me — even a small amount — you will be entered to win a super-sweet quilted scarf. Click here for all the information!

I rarely sit on a window seat when flying, but both flights today had open spots, so two of us could comfortably be in a three-seat row. Sat next to the window to do some photos/video and got some nice shots. Flying still amazes me. @SouthwestAir #Southwest #Flying #Airplane

I hate being in front of the camera, but also realize sometimes it's not the worst thing in the world. So, I'm getting better with it. Week 4's theme was all about us and having us in front of the camera, so I tried to come up with a creative way to do it.

The theme for Week 3 of the 52-week video challenge was "Show your process of making something." Alas, I didn't get the time to do what I wanted to do, so I attacked something I filmed over the summer that I kept putting off.
